Wow, I'm shocked at how cheap cost of living is in Chongqing! I visited once a couple of years ago and I found it to be a beautiful city. I also worked for EF, which is how I ended up in Beijing.
I did find it useful. I'm planning to move to Chongqing in a couple of years to retire. My wife is Chinese but I am not fluent in Chinese at all so i wanted to see if it was easy to get around for english speakers.
So glad you found it useful! Yeah I couldn’t speak any Chinese & of course sometimes it was hard, but I had my translator app on my phone and felt like I was able to get around just fine
Helpful video. Another tip I'd like to give for anyone whoever decides to go, if you have enough money you can also offer to pay your rent upfront for a year. Usually you can even get a good discount then. That's what my girlfriend and me did living in Guiyang, currently on our third year here. But am considering of moving to Chongqing, currently here as we speak.
Thanks for the details. I have been thinking about early retirement and would love to live in Chongqing for an extended period if I do. This gives me a good overview of what to expect. Did you also visit other parts of China, or take opportunities to visit neighboring countries for weekend trips?
That would be awesome! Chongqing is so amazing. And yes! I was traveling all the time and went to so many places in China from Chongqing either on a plane or train. And on all my teaching holidays I went abroad to other countries! It’s an easy place to travel from!
@@SheRunTheWorld Thanks for your quick response. And Happy New Year to you and your close ones! Hope you get many opportunities to explore places far and wonderful!
I’ve been teaching chongqing university and chongqing normal university marching band back in 2017 . Love the university a lot . But so far away from city .
Really loved the video! I'm working for EF in Wuhan at the moment. The utilities are seem very similar between the two areas. Also do you have any advice on getting those higher paying teaching jobs in china? EF is a great start but I'd like to earn a bit more.
Thanks!! Very cool, good to know. Honestly, just from living in CQ I met people who were working at international schools and even had people reach out to me on LinkedIn since my location on there was Chongqing. So I feel like it’s easier to make connections the longer you’re there! EF definitely is a great start, but if you want to make good money international schools are the way to go! I’d say just start researching international schools in your area and see if you easily transition there after your EF contract since you’re already in the area!

@@SheRunTheWorldnice, I am a Canadian, because of covi-19, I am back in Canada now. I am willing to go to Chongqing this year later when I get back to China. I have been visiting a lot of times to the city of Shanghai for the past 3 years. It seems Chongqing is the city waitting for me to figure out, both the city of Chongqing and Shenzhen are my 2 goals. Also, I am wondering how big is the expat circle in Chongqing. Thank you again for your detailed infos.
@@cyruschen2618 very cool, I hope you get to visit CQ this year!!! Well I have friends who live in both Shanghai and Shenzhen & I know their expat community is definitely a lot bigger. But I still felt like CQ’s was pretty big. I was always meeting new expats by going out on 9th street! So that’s where I suggest you start meeting people and hopefully they’ll invite you into some wechat groups based on your interests!
@@SheRunTheWorld Nice, I would love to go. Thank you for your detailed infos. I don't think I will be back to China earlier than June 2021. Hopfully I can make it this year later. Thank you.
i wonder how much it is now for food and apartments ? ... with all this inflation .. food here in the states is insanity you can order doordash and easily spend over 30 bucks for one meal its tragic honestly ... you said 30-80 RMB thats 4 bucks to 11 bucks for a meal i would take that all day and pretty much get 3 meals 😂 .asia is nuts with the affordability.... i was looking at Thailand but mite go for China cuz of the visa exemption with my caribbean passport it will be one thing to not stress about that would be one of the biggest reasons to go to china
Yeah I’m honestly not sure about the inflation as I lived there in 2018-2019. Although I had friends who stayed until 2022 and they said the prices stayed relatively the same! So I can’t imagine it’s increased a lot, it’s a very affordable place to live if you choose a tier 2 or 3 city. The tier 1 cities are very expensive
Thank you very much for your detailed video, appreciate your rundown of the expenses so much! Is there a big demand for English teachers and can one choose how long they wish to teach for?
Of course, glad I could help! Yeah there’s a big demand for English teachers there- it’s a fairly new “modern” city so most people don’t speak English & they’re trying to change that for the next generation! That’ll depend on the school/company you choose! For EF it’s a minimum 1 year contract!
Walking 🚶♀️ around the streets of Chongqin is pretty cool. I was the biggest man around with blue eyes and blonde hair. Every female was checking me out!
Haha Chongqing is awesome! And foreigners stick out like a sore thumb! I’m 5’10 with blonde hair and green eyes and I always could feel how much I stuck out😂 but I loved living there so much
That’s a great question, I’m actually not sure. I haven’t lived there since 2018. But I’d say if you head out to a bar on 9th street you’re bound to meet loads of foreigners and can talk with them about any clubs and associations!
I worked for EF China so that’s why I moved there - super easy to get hired by them! Starting off made 15667 RMB and only paid about 2000 RMB per month for rent and bills. By month 5 I was increased to 17667- So either way had tons left over!!
how much have you earned per month in Yuan (renmingbi) from teaching english in china? cause you can't convert the expense into US Dollar, and earning Yuan. can you live with your earning per month? thx you for your info.
I’m actually not sure. I think the Chinese government has stricter regulations and you need to be a native speaker. But I don’t know for sure! Maybe you can find a company that gets around that!
@@SheRunTheWorld what he said was fly from Chong Qing to other parts of China, usually cheaper than other cities like chengdu , Beijing air quality mostly healthy in 2020 by the way
Is the communism even an issue? that's what I'm most curious about. Can people really speak their minds? Is there freedom of expression? Do they control what information people are allowed to access?
I think it’s a bit different as a foreigner because it’s not our country or our issues to speak about. But no, you can’t speak your mind or have freedom of expression. They control all information on the internet, most of it is blocked.
