I'm not gonna go into technical things. But seeing you, as a same age mentor (at least at programming) driving a car that is what I want, was very inspiring. Thanks for racing with 911.
@sentdex
@sentdex 5 лет назад
The 911 is actually just a track car, was racing a gt4 clubsport. I'm considering converting my 911 to a spec 997, but most of the spec 997 racers are PDK, and my 997 is a manual. Kind of a big difference. I love manual, but, it's really nice to focus more on driving and gear selection with a PDK than sacrificing with MT.

Dude after your last upload i had to dig around to find out more about your racing and this was an absolutely amazing video. My wife yelled for me about ten minutes into it and I snapped to, realizing that i was *literally* sitting on the edge of the seat, elbows all sprawled out wide on the desk, face a foot from the screen with the doofiest mouth breathing grin i can think of mustering. The chaos of the whole thing combined with this pucker factor of waiting to hear crunching sheet metal and then your steady eddy description of your strategy...damn good TV lol. So impressed, man.

That pass in T11 was borderline divebomb. When the other guy got you into T1, you should have done the over/under on him. Especially if he had to park it, you could have done that there. T1 at COTA has a ton of room for that kind of move into both T1 and T11. Great channel though. Came for the Python but you just tapped into one of my other passions.
@sentdex
@sentdex 5 лет назад
Agree on divebomb, which is why I stopped trying to pass there with trains. Can see how it coulda gone poorly a bit later. Race 1 was really just getting tossed in the deep end. No way to prepare for it til you do it and make sketchy moves like that to learn from. Plenty of other things too like the mentioned over under. I watched the videos after and saw quite a few things I wished I had done differently, but still happy overall. Rookies have big Xs on their cars to hopefully alert you to our noobiness.

I wasn't expecting to see this, but it was a lot of fun to watch! It looks to me like you did really great for your first race day (not that I'm any sort of racing expert). I wouldn't mind getting into this a little myself, but I just want to race, not pick up another hobby in maintaining a race vehicle. I may have to find somebody to partner with who can do most of the maintenance if I bankroll it.

@sentdex
@sentdex 5 лет назад
Hmm, you know, I really don't notice it. I am sure there are some added G's, but maybe you don't notice because up the hill is also a brake zone (and pucker zone). Maybe if one was totally relaxed, you'd feel it...otherwise it's just cool because you can brake even faster there since it's basically free downforce.

Can you create a Patreon for your race car and have it sponsored by your RU-vid fans? (Not familiar with team sponsorship rules in your class of racing). Also, it would be SUPER interesting to hear the unit economics of car racing. Would love to get some insight into the cost breakdown of a racing season. Awesome video :)
@sentdex
@sentdex 5 лет назад
Oh yeah, you totally *could* crowdfund a racecar. I've thought about livestreaming trackdays/races too, can at least do that in clubracing. I would suspect IMSA and others maaaaaay or may not allow livestreaming since they have their own broadcasting, but could probably still do it. The cost of racing is ... highly variable. You can race anywhere between 50K a year to 1 million+ per race :O. For your typical race team that you see on IMSA... they're probably doing ~$1m a year. It's not cheap, and it's usually funded by people who just really love to drive. Sponsors rarely actually cover the costs.
@tylerives7410
@tylerives7410 5 лет назад
@@sentdex That's super interesting. I would like to think we could totally get you 50k a year from your RU-vid crew specifically for racing (of course you would know more about that than I would). I would definitely be all about contributing to that. think it's really cool to see multidisciplinary channel hosts sharing their passion for things. I definitely want to support that. And the quality of your channel is off the charts. I've personally seen a lot of value in the content you create. If you need another hand on your racing team, give me a call. "at a typical DE you can trust like 10%" welcome to champcar racing ;) 5:58 - when you go to pass someone, try to squeeze as close to the car as possible. it compromises their corner entry and prevents them from overtaking you via. over/under. essentially you make them go so deep into the corner that thay're forced to turn sharper than you. also when they hit you (and eventually they will), a small tap from a few inches is much less damage than a large impact from a few feet.

@@sentdex chump was changed to champ to sound more professional lol. It's an absolute blast to drive in though. @sentdex
@sentdex 5 лет назад
Obviously a joke, but it's a grey area. IMO, it'd be neat to use computer models to help with throttle application and braking. We already do, with traction control and ABS, but I think it'd be a cool area to apply deep learning. Steering input, aside from power steering, is mostly unmolested and I believe it is against the rules. I suspect we could add modeling for smarter braking and throttle without many eyebrows raised though since computers already do a lot there for racers.
