There are four major causes of general aviation accidents, according to NTSB Vice Chairman Bruce Landsberg. He reviews the latest safety trends, from VFR-into-IMC accidents to engine failures, and offers his tips for staying safe. He also shares some surprising statistics about the possible role of ADS-B traffic in reducing midair collisions, and explains why flight data monitoring should be adopted by far more GA pilots. In the Ready to Copy segment, Bruce talks about angle of attack indicators, whole airplane parachute systems, flight simulators, and even his time as a missile launch officer in the US Air Force.

As the NTSB rep stated, currently he’s the only active pilot on the board. What? I understand that not being current doesn’t necessarily mean clueless, but c’mon man. These are persons making determinations affecting everyone in GA and beyond.

With incident investigation, one of the requirements is to provide mitigation recommendations but looking back at GA accidents, few to none have any recommendations (unless there is political influence), especially for "repeat" incidents - as you say "same issue different day". What is being done to address this to reduce the number of incidents? (EG education drives like airlines do with accreditation (AQP?), reducing cost of GA equipment certification & thereby reduce cost to end-user so more will install it etc) Loved the talk and addressed a number of great points - a must listen!

I experienced a bad case vertigo, in an Aero Commander 500, at low altitude. The auto pilot circuit breaker had tripped. The tell was the sound of increasing air speed, in a 60 degree bank. The difficult part was rolling back level flight.

I've been instructing for a long time...and one can present all info available...however one can't control stupid! Human behavior,at times goes right out the window...even with a high timer thinking he could beat a squall line in a GA plane; and they die...Scott crossfield...test pilot took on a TW in a c210...broke apart in flight...and he knew better...had a clubmember do loops in the city,and stuffed a c150 in his girlfriends car port after a few loops...who could have known...and the feds came complaining to me at the school where he received his private ticket; didn't kno he was a head cass.never kno til after the crash ...

I an going for my private pilot and my CFI put my under the hood for 25 min. each way to and from the destination airport. It was bumpy and here I am having to navigate, and fly by the instruments. It was not easy and I was all over the place. I was not within ASC standards. My CFI, stated, well if you fly in the cloud it more than likely be bumpy. I had to deal with the attitude changes, navigate - heading on the HSI, Altitude, airspeed and so on. I think under the hood work is something VFR pilots need to practice every so often. like at least twice per every six month period. Will need to take up a CFI to do so.

Not only GA pilots are dying. A bunch of innocent folks, passengers and ground bystanders, are dying as well. The FAA should implement FAR Parts 135 and/or 121 type rules and limits when GA pilots carry passengers in order to prevent those pilots from using poor judgement regarding weather, fuel planning and maintenance issues. The aviation insurance community should be putting the hammer down HARD to get crummy pilots grounded. NTSB is just too slow and hesitant to assign probable causes to accidents. Dan Gryder is right.

Why can't GA be more like the airlines, simple answer, money. There would be no GA if you had to have the same equipment and training. I fly rentals because ownership is out of reach for me today, GA is already really expensive.
@braininavatnow9197
@braininavatnow9197 Год назад
I don't think it's that simple at all. You didn't hear what he said that GA and the airlines have nothing in common except occasionally they share the same airspace. By its very nature GA will always have a higher risk than the airlines and that's one reason why we love it so much. The technology has reached the point where the airlines could be completely automated with no pilots (in the cockpit) whatsoever, that will never happen with general aviation because so many of us fly just for the joy of flying.

I’ve been in aviation for more than five decades as a pro pilot, flight instructor and check airman. Many pilots still don’t know how to properly lean a GA aircraft. I see it every day. I wouldn’t let my wife fly with them, but they met the “minimum standards.” People are reluctant to train, even when the CFI is offered for free. I have no idea how to resolve the issues without the cure killing the patient financially or encouraging the government to be more intrusive in our daily aviation lives. Memorizing more acronyms and mnemonics won’t do a thing. Sad state of affairs.

I bought a clean classic but can do my own maintenance. Makes it very affordable. We do annuals on some private aircraft and they are in very poor condition, I'm surprised there are not more accidents.

@@braininavatnow9197 I believe automation on GA aircraft is possible. Doesn’t Cirrus Aircraft use Garmin autopilot? Also once we transition to electric GA airplanes, im sure it will come standard on those.

And we are having twice the number of deaths than that of distracted drivers from Fentanyl over doses. The equivalent of an airline crashing every day. What are we doing about that? 1.8 trillion with the Omnibus bill and not one dime on securing the border. Come on Man!

The one regulation I’d change; 20/20 vision (corrected or not) for 2nd and 1st medical certificate. I think it’s too tight, I’d change it to 20/30.

Traffic collisions. I am going for my Private pilot and have come closer to traffic. I live in very very packed airspace. It's called the LA basin. We are packed down here.

Funny the NTSB says they work closely with rail. After seeing some of the aftermath of one of the crashed Norfolk Southern trains (Ohio), its kind of clear the rail inspections, maintenance and actual effort to log work is not held to the same standard as aerospace is. Hopefully this crash helps right the rail industry.

I know what aviation rule I would change… § 91.113. Aircraft operating within the traffic pattern should have the right of way over aircraft not in the pattern.

I am a private pilot and already had one engine issue. Lucky it happened before rotate in my contested area. Some flight schools take short cuts with engine issues. I see a trend with engine issues and traffic near misses.

If you wanted to compare the general aviation person to the commercial aviation person one thing as glaringly out there training. I have noticed in my studies of airplane crashes particularly weather-related there seems to be a lot of pilots out there with a whole lot of visual flight rated hours, this tends to produce a very confident person. When this confident person is from someplace like the Southwest states of the United States and the cloud cover is generally a very high altitude he bounces in around out of a cloud here and there and he's happy and thinks he's really got the skills to pay the bills. Then a person like this fly someplace back East where the clouds or lower to the ground it might be all the way foggy down for the last 2 thousand feet. Is luck runs out as he dances in between the clouds in a place where the clouds get so low and he crashes. There is a cure for a lot of these if you would force mandatory training on anybody who has more than 1,000 hours in the air that he must be instrument flight rated or quit flying.

Great thoughts on this Nancy. Really enjoyed it. My current position required me to apply three times but in the meantime I was turned down over and over in the LTP market. In addition to the 1000-1500 rule we also have insurance carriers driving higher minimums by simply not insuring lower time pilots especially on multi engine aircraft. The shortage exists absolutely but the challenge is having the perseverance to keep going after completing their COM ASEL AMEL ratings from my opinion. Great job and thank you for bringing attention to this topic.
