And finally, 5 full YEARS after his first appearance on the WML panel demolishing the whole format, the producers dared to have him back on the panel again.

Amazing Groucho could be so funny here. This was about 6 weeks after Harpo died. From what I understand he took the loss hard. He still stole the show.

I know it bothers some, and it's not like you wanted to see it every week, but at this stage in the game the show had earned the right to get a little silly just every now and then. And there was no one better suited for this than Groucho. Such a brilliant and quick mind, I'm sure he had a whole file cabinet of material up above those shoulders, just waiting to be deployed! It was fun to watch the ladies, especially Dorothy, not be able to maintain composure around the one.. the only.. the indomitable Mr. Marx!

Not, however, quick enough to ask a non-wasted question very often. Other comedians at least cooperate to the extent of asking actual questions. He's been uncooperative as a panelist and was uncooperative as a mystery guest, even by the standards of comedians.

As much as Groucho tended to "hijack" the show, he also could bring out the best in the other people on it. Arlene, Dorothy, and even some of the guests had some of the funniest lines I've seen recently!

ZoneFighter1 Groucho wasn't an ideal panelist, but he did *not* ruin any of the episodes he was on either. Some unexpected incidents and funny behaviour, doesn't ruin a well running show. It only gives it some more spice! ;)

Groucho's a great improvisor very quick he just throws it out there sometimes it works sometimes not. The chaos he brings is often hilarious.

I'd like to add that a perfect example of what thegalaxybeing and Jeff Shornack are saying is when Dorothy Kilgallen passed the ball to Groucho at 20:52. A non sequitur works on that speedy turnaround of the unexpected. Groucho, whose timing is excellent, delivered in 1.5 seconds! Furthermore, DK really set the bar high when she surrendered her turn to "Mr. Marx" and stated "...he'll at least have something funny to say." Well, Mr. Marx got in and out quickly - you can't linger on it - and did not disappoint.

I couldn't help but to laugh out loud when Groucho said "a wise guy". I loved how he kept the jokes coming! Also I still cannot understand why people comment that Groucho is rude or distracting, don't they understand that is his shtick, his comedy! I personally think he is just hilarious. Anne Bancroft had just married Mel Brooks a few months before this show aired! She was 32 years old at the time. She and Mel remained married until her death in 2005 (uterine cancer).

She was recently married to another comedy legend. This was ten years after New Faces of 1952. Anyone in comedy already considered Mel Brooks a uniquely hilarious genius, as he still remarkably is 70 years after he first performed on Broadway. Groucho alludes to that connection between them.

John Daly often looks down at his feet to see if he's in the correct spot for the cameraman. Sometimes, he also pulls the guest closer to him & informs them that he wants to be sure that they'll be "in the shot." I'm surprised Bennett didn't draw the easy conclusion as to why John does that.

@@timholbrook7671 Opposites in some ways (at least their public personas), but they were both whip-smart--and I'm sure they shared a lot of other things in common. Also, some women highly value a great sense of humor in a guy. Like when Jessica Rabbit was asked, "What do you see in that guy (her husband, Roger Rabbit)?" she said simply, "He makes me laugh."

John's accent was actually a combination of being a native of South Africa, having a British mother, attending school from 5th grade on in New England, and having a Scottish nanny as a little boy. :) He once recalled that when he came to this country, he had to be taught how to "speak American", and was shunned as a young student in New England because of his speech. He was quoted in a Saturday Evening Post article as saying "I have a quaint illusion I don't sound funny".

I've watched many episodes of WML? and I don't think Bennett Cerf's button down clean cut persona blends well with Groucho's racy ad libs; and yes, looks like Dorothy K. let her hair down and had fun; there are rumors out there that Dorothy was a secret freaky party girl, I know there's mystery surrounding her death

A subject pretty close to home for me, as a type I diabetic. Type Is are but a tiny minority of diabetics, however (about 5%), and tend not to go undiagnosed as long as type IIs can. At least not without, well, dying. ;)

We still need to be made aware of Diabetes in 2014. Personal aside as illustration -- a neighbor of mine, 15 year old young woman, died this summer of undiagnosed diabetes.

So funny, because Bennett was a great wit, but had no timing, so his windup could be a stemwinder. That Groucho burst in so fast made it not at all mean-spirited, but chaotically interrupting for comedy.

Hemingway wrote wonderfully about Luis Miguel Dominguín and his rivalry with Antonio Ordóñez in "The Dangerous Summer". On another note, I know some folks don't like Groucho's interruptions. But I think he's fantastic. He's a good change-up to spell the usual format. He's always trying. And you gotta admit, "Are you Sonny Liston?" is pretty darn funny.

@@jarst50 I don't know whether or not anybody was cringing back then, including the women. Maybe it was more like it still is today in Latin America, Spain, Italy, etc, where women don't necessarily feel appreciated otherwise. Or so some of them claim. In other words, it might have been done in the spirit of complementing the women, and may have been received in the same way. It's impossible for us to know unless we were adults back then.

Jed Johnson Junior served as a Democrat to the 89th Congress from January 3, 1965 to January 3, 1967. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1966 to the 90th Congress. He served as special assistant to the Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity from 1967 to 1968, and as a member of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from 1968 to 1972. He was also a consultant to the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities in 1973. He died in 1993 at the age of 53

I remember at least one other time, an elderly female detective from a 1950s show. Groucho was actually very far ahead of his time in terms of his feelings about racial justice, so it's a bit jarring to hear him use the term "colored". I have no doubt he didn't mean it as a slur in any way. Remember what the initials in the NAACP stand for-- this wasn't always considered a derogatory term, even by black people.

What's My Line? Oh, yes, Gary. In no way do I believe Groucho meant it as a slur. There are old timers around today who still use it, more or less out of ignorance, but not in a mean way. It was unusual also because I have rarely heard race described in any way on 50' and 60's tv, most exceptionally on Amos and Andy. I have a running bet with a friend, that race was never mentioned and probably never even inferred to on the television program.

Blessed son of a gun Mel Brooks that he convinced Anne Bancroft to marry him the year before. There's a household that must have held fun parties. Brooks would have been a good panelist or mystery guest -- too bad he never showed up on Sunday night WML. I wonder if Groucho and Mel ever worked together.

I'm not aware of any time Groucho and Mel worked together (and I'm a huge fan of both). As for being on WML, Mel wasn't widely known to the public until the 1970s. But that sure would have been a hoot!

I remember that Mel Brooks used to make appearances on "The Hollywood Squares." I vivid remember for some reason Peter Marshall asking Mel, "What is the world's oldest sport?" and Mel replying without missing a beat, "Cesar Romero. He still has two-tone wing tips."

"The most deserved Oscar ever given as far as I'm concerned" states John Daly referring to Miss Bancroft's performance in 'THE MIRACLE WORKER'. Insightful on his part. Just watched "Blue Jasmine" with Cate Blanchett. I don't what all the Oscar buzz was over that. The movie read like a revised transcript to "A Streetcar Named Desire" which was better on every level.

+BixbyConsequence I'm not so sure. As someone who wanted to be the center of attention, he didn't like to be upstaged. When the Congressman-elect zings him with a good comeback, Groucho calls him a "wise guy" and while I admit not knowing what was in Groucho's mind, the vocal inflection and facial expression sounded like someone who was irritated without a wink or other gesture that would indicate it was put on.

@@loissimmons6558It looked to me like Groucho was thinking of a good comeback and chose the pot calling the kettle black. Marx was often upstaged by guests on You Bet Your Life and he would pause to let the audience enjoy the joke.

@@loissimmons6558 I disagree. Groucho did his trademark deadpan pause. He let the Congressman’s remark sink in and had a chuckle when he looked down. When dealing with other showbiz folk trying to get a word in , he could be nasty and unpleasant. There’s a Dean Martin roast where Don Rickles skewers every guest on the podium but ignores Groucho completely. Groucho is stewing in his own bile but Rickles knew Groucho wouldn’t take his ribbing in any kind of good humor and would try and take over the floor.

Anne Bancroft and Mel Brooks married in New York City's City Hall Marriage Bureau on August 5th, 1964, her film that year THE PUMPKIN EATER had it's New York City Premeire on November 9th, 1964... Extremely recommended if interested, one of her best performances of her career. A film extremely ahead of it's time, for this film she won awards for 1964, the best actress Golden Globe Award in a Drama, best actress Cannes Film Award, the British Academy Film Award and received the 1964 best actress oscar nomination. :)

So at 11:20 Louis approaches somewhat hesitantly if you will notice. Groucho picks up on this and when he shakes hands Groucho kisses his own wrist, which then compels Louis to give him a very affectionate embrace. Wtf was that? Lol. He literally Groucho'd Groucho Marx. That moment is easily one of the funniest moments of television history.

Arlene Francis had opened at the Morosco Theater in Beekman Place on 7 Oct 1964. Her performance received good reviews but the play itself was not well regarded and closed on 31 Oct after only 29 performances and 2 previews (6 Oct).

This program and many others from the day certainly put current "Reality Programs" to absolute shame. At least "What's My Line" was entertaining unlike today's Frosted Flakes which really accomplish nothing more than sending one to the bathroom even when not necessary.

I couldn't believe that someone would invest in over-painted broads who do nothing but devote a half-hour each segment calling each other bitch and HO...wow!.

robert glenn brother you just don't know how I truly dislike those type shows, along with the 'glorified karaoke' shows, personally I've just about given up on broadcast tv...sure I'll watch sports and occasional movie and they're a pita with all the commercials but most bc tv is in my opinion is junk, if you have half a brain it really tends to numb even that half. I guess the generations watching it don't really know but the producers are cleaning up hand over fist and that's what it's all about these days....take the money and run.

He was great in his movies and his TV show, You Bet Your Life. But he never respected the premise of What’s My Line nor the role of the panelists. He was incorrigible about hijacking the show and turning it into the Groucho Marx Comedy Show. I cringe at his appearances on WML.

Wow! Anne Bancroft was married to Mel Brooks, and she's the mother of Max Brooks, the author of World War Z. I always thought of her as this marvelous serious actress, I had no idea she had that comedy connection too. No wonder Groucho commented on her recent marriage - Mel Brooks was a huge fan of the Marx brothers' work and had been a comedy writer for Sid Caesar for well over a decade.

Jed Johnson Jr, elected in 1964, served only one term before being defeated in 1966 by James Vernon Smith, who in turn lost in 1968. Frank Lucas has represented this part of Oklahoma since 1994.

Gil Fates said in his book that the only time he ever saw Groucho speechless was when the bullfighter greeted him on his walk down the panel. Except -- Groucho was not at a loss for words. Very funny sequence.
