The panel was ALWAYS immeasurably gracious, especially Arlene Francis. She never failed to make everyone feel completely welcome. For that era, nothing beat this show for how kind they were to guess, regardless of ethnicity, class or culture.

@johncollins7062 All of the black guests of the show had to come in through the rear of the studio off the alley where trash was dumped. Nat King Cole stated that he waited in a room that was a converted broom closet until the show started. Cole stated that he was wealthier and more famous than anyone on the panel, but due to racism, he was still required to come and leave from the rear door of the studio and wait in a converted broom closet before coming on the show.

Nancy Kwan ♥️ some of God's best work. I remember I used to watch this show every Sunday night. Arlene was classy and beautiful also. Interesting fashion of that period and hair hairstyle's. I know that it's cliche but what a simpler time, sure the sixties had it's own problems. But think about it, no cellphones and we all survived. A time when the pace of life was slower. I wish I had a time machine to go back and observe unseen. Sure would be a useful tool for teaching history as it really happened not what's in the history books. But before I go off on a tangent, I just think Nancy Kwan was beautiful sweet and 🔥🌡️🔥beyond words.

It is logical to assume that he was saluting the American flag draped over the coffin. And to make the moment even more poignant, the funeral service occurred on John Jr.'s third birthday. Furthermore, if you look at the photo closely, there is also a military officer saluting at the same time. And here, from Penn State's archives, is at least one account of how this moment came about and how it was captured on film. sites.psu.edu/hannahirossblog/2015/11/19/john-john-salute/

Nancy Kuan is British being born in Hong Kong before 1999. Everyone at the time she born was a British Subject. Margaret Thatcher made everyone a British citizen. Her father was Chinese her mother, Marquita Scott, depending on what you read was Scottish or Scottish-English/ British. Regardless she was British and although, encouraged her daughter's dancing, Nancy went to the famous Sadler's Wells Ballet School in London, she insisted Nancy also get an education. The use of English here is because people though England and Britain were synonymous. They weren't then and aren't now, four countries making up the UK.

I'm pretty sure Bennett was just messing with John during the introductions; it wasn't the first (nor the last) time that he deliberately misrepresented John Daly's middle names for comedic value. And yes, he did misspeak when he called Nancy Kwan "Ms. Kwai", but Dorothy also mistook Mr. Ball for "Mr. Bull". It's an honest error that could've happened to anyone, so there's no need to go after Bennett specifically.

I never heard of Nancy Kwan but she was beautiful. I wonder if it was pc to call her an oriental girl instead of asian back in 1960 though.
@ToddSF
@ToddSF 9 лет назад
Doug w. Yes, "oriental" was a commonplace term in 1960 for people whose origins are Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Tonkinese, etc. "Asian" became the far more acceptable adjective within the past 20 years or so. If you never heard of Nancy Kwan, you never saw the film adaptation of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical "Flower Drum Song". Ms. Kwan played the role that Pat Suzuki had played on stage. She was trained in dancing, so she was selected to play the role partly because she could dance. However, her singing was dubbed in by someone else.

Dick Wilson oriental is more specific than asian. more connected to south east and east asians. wouldnt include indians or sri lankans who are still asians. personally being called oriental sounds weird. i connect it more to things rather than people. say asian or south-east asian. but just my opinion

Doug w. I have an arts/literature background. My understanding is that Oriental is an adjective used to describe culture/art/history...in other words, you call "things" Oriental but not people. So it's appropriate in any era to speak of Oriental carpets, Oriental ceramics, Oriental mythology or Oriental craftsmanship but to define a person it's proper English to use their geographical area as the delineator. However as this isn't common knowledge for the average person, and books in the 60s and earlier often used the term Oriental as a noun rather than adjective, it's more or less universally accepted since it's been in use so long in this way.

CDU9176 It’s really not acceptable nowadays. Books in the 60s and earlier may have used it, yes, but not today. Books in the 60s and earlier said a lot of things we’ve moved on from today!
