Was at a New York City party in 1972 where Julie Newmar showed up. She was even more incredible looking in person than on the screen. Maybe more astounding in real life because her package of physical attributes were the kind rarely come across in everyday life. Tall, curvaceous she was a show stopper in a room full of celebrities from the entertainment world.

Miss Goldner's married name was Ormandy, but she and her husband, violinist and conductor Eugene Ormandy, got divorced in 1947. She was a harpist, and was briefly the first woman to be part of the New York Philharmonic, in the 30s. In the 50s, she was part of a bunch of Broadway shows. She died of pancreatic cancer in 1962. (Ugh.) Meanwhile, Kayaloff, married someone whose name I can't find, but it doesn't seem to have lasted, and she and her family (most of them also professional musicians) were immigrants from Russia. (Came over in 1923, when Anna was 16.) She was briefly with the Baltimore Symphony and a bunch of others, and studied with Pablo Casals at one point, and, also, played with a bunch of Broadway shows. Died in 1993 (at age 86) in Cary, North Carolina (for some reason). Was a concert pianist, but cello was what she mostly played on Broadway & in symphonies. I think Bill Long went to Vanderbilt on a football scholarship, but I'm not sure.

For a first time panelist, Rita Gam was excellent. Not only was she attractive and articulate, she got a leg up with the first challenger, the second challengers couldn't hold a candle to her and she took a blind stab correctly with the mystery guest. Sadly they ran out of time in the final segment, otherwise she might have been 4 for 4. Although neither of her marriages lasted for at least ten years and both ended in divorce, whatever the reason, she attracted two husbands who had more cerebral careers than the typical actor could claim. One more husband and it might have been her that Tom Lehrer sang about rather than Alma Mahler Gropius Werfel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8QEsdfX-Lek.html

Seeing young people being prosperous in raising their own funds for college was so refreshing. Something you don’t see anymore, sadly.
@alittleinappropriate
@alittleinappropriate 2 года назад
Probably because taking into account inflation, college tuition has risen ~150-300% since then, at a rate exponentially higher than wage increases. So college is quite literally unaffordable, even if the student is working- which about half of full-time students do, while also being in school full time. As an example: Harvard tuition in 1961 was $1520, about $14,000 today. Harvard tuition in 2021 is $54,000. Federal minimum wage in 1961 was $1.15, about $10.75 today. Federal minimum wage today is $7.25. In 1961, you could work part time and easily pay your own tuition. Today, you would have to work full time for 4 years to pay for one year of tuition.

Interesting to see Shelley Berman here... a famous comedian at the time who is not very well known anymore. He had a part of his act where he spoke one end of a phone conversation, a gimmick that Bob Newhart became famous for shortly after (Berman accused Newhart of stealing it).

It's interesting that Newhart got bigger with the passing of time and Berman rather faded out.

Shelly Berman has always seemed to me to be a bitter man. He had some popularity in the 50's, but his career took a downturn after he either made some egotistical comments backstage at a show (Ed Sullivan maybe?) or berated someone backstage that turned off other performers and when word got out to the public it turned them off too. I've been trying to find the story on the internet, but to no avail. Although I did find a NY Times article that said he had an unpredictable temperament and once walked off stage during a show and ripped a ringing telephone out of the wall. Anyway, it seems maybe he wasn't an easy person to get along with. He now blames his career downfall to Bob Newhart stealing his schtick so as with many people he refuses to take responsibility for his own actions and would prefer to blame it on others. That's just my take.

Shelly Berman stole Grouchos gag about putting the mask on upside down during the first mystery guest segment and tried to get a laugh with it....... Wasn't funny when he did it, Groucho however COULD get away with it because he WAS funny. Also i sometimes hate it when a guest comedian panelist tries to be funny during the show, but just merely ends up becoming painfully annoying. And i don't get Shelly Berman

Mrs Kennedy turned to the legendary Diana Vreeland, who at that time was Fashion Editor of Harper's Bazaar, for advice on who could make her clothes, other than the French couturiers she loved so much.. For political reasons, she really needed an American designer. But to satisfy her own sophisticated taste, she desired a European sensibility. Mrs Vreeland recommended Oleg Cassini.

You know. When we were kids. The entertainment taught us something. We learned about people and the kinds of professions they were in. We learned how to ask questions to investigate an unknown. Then we applied our new knowledge, we tried it out in real life. We learned how to interact socially; and we even learned about morals and values. What do the kids learn from the video games today? Hum? What good are they? Do they help a person to be any of the above? Can you imagine what kind of citizens they will be? What kind of parents? How about business owners, or government officials?

I agree with Cynthia - an egg is not dairy and the only question that should be answered yes is “is it found in the supermarket near the milk and cheese?”.
