“Hogan’s Heroes” was abruptly cancelled by CBS in March, 1971. Bob Crane had recently married the actress that played Hilda, the secretary, in a recurring role, but perhaps when CBS management found out about his serial infidelity and videotaping his sexual liaisons with a home video camera system ( which was very expensive at that time), they essentially fired him for violating the network’s morals clause in his network contract. This show was taped shortly after “Hogan’s Heroes” cancellation (although the series was still aired in reruns until September, 1971). Robert Clary was unemployed at this time, and this appearance on the show provided him some badly-needed money. Clary eventually found additional acting work, and also worked as an artistic painter. He also gave many speeches about the Holocaust, and his own firsthand experiences during that time.
If you're fortunate to make a livelihood from work as an actor/actress in a hit television series one should learn to live below your means in preparation of a reversal of fortune. Oftentimes, for entertainers, the financial troubles occur while at the peak of their earning power when the bottom falls out. Television performers of Clary's era may have made the kind of money that would've set them up for life, but by living a less large lifestyle they might have fared better surviving a series' cancellation until they start earning again. It was said that former "M*A*S*H" co-star Wayne Rogers was a very skilled investor where he had the luxury of choosing acting roles not solely motivated by money. At the time of Rogers' death he was worth $75M!!
Hogan's Heroes followed Lassie on Sunday nights that year. Meredith is correct that there were still weekly repeats at the time of this taping, but CBS would pull them a couple months later, truly ending HH's six-year run on the network.
He’s a big pervert. Always touching and kissing young women. I know it was a different time, I’m nearly 60…, but many times when he does this you can see how uncomfortable the women are. And nobody else does it except for Gene and Richard Dawson.
