I am using maya since 2008 and now considering to learn blender. I think this software will be dead in 5 years. There is like nothing major happened since 2015 or something.
I would be on that in a split second. Softimage XSI was amazing and really ahead of it's time. I am sure I could create fantastic stuff even by today's standards with it if it ever returned. I miss it when I think about it.
Even after solid updates, blender is behind Maya. Maya doesn't need to move fast. It is already ahead. It would be better if Maya takes its time and properly program new features. If you go fast, then you'll compromise on quality and end up like Boeing.
Welp blender had Maya's, Houdini's and various softwares' example to create their so call industry breaking updates not here to diss any software but this is a fact would not want Autodesk to create a fall for themselves by forcing updates...
It’s not their tool, it was developed by Disney a long time ago and Autodesk has integrated an old version of Xgen in maya (don’t know if they bought it or whatever) but they don’t update it as it’s not their tool, that’s why our Xgen doesn’t evolve. From what I heard, Disney continues to upgrade Xgen on their side and the version they have nowadays is far from what we know actually (if I am right they use different tools between Pixar and Disney). If you’re interested, there are some free plugin developed by some groomers like Jesus FC and more that can enhance your experience, or you can make your own tool/scripts with mel/python 🙃
Thanks... Yes.. I was jn Jesus Petreon site for a while. I was always wondering why Maya had not made any update about Xgen. Your thought has given me some insight.
@Red_Paper6495a better content browser like C4D , where we can store materials , assets with thumbnail previews , the current model is subpar . -Also a material library for Arnold , like Arnold been default with maya for yrs , make more of an effort to bring interest to the masses , look at chaos cosmos , even a noob can just drag and drop materials and play around . -Then bring some more non destructive modifiers of 3ds max ( personal preference) . -Make maya light weight , takes hella time to load and open the software compared to blender which has more plugins and stuff yet faster to load Are these enough ? I been using maya for yrs , never used any other software on the long run like blender , so don't call me a blender fan boy .
viewport - 10 years old, any improvements. shader graph editor - 20 years old, any improvements. ui - still very bugy and the same for 10 years. smart extrude should be introduced 5 years ago, nowdays every program have it. very very bad autodesk, as always

Did you guys start working on it like a week before release? otherwise how come you only have handful of features for a major version release? This software cost almost $2k a year.
There is continued work being done on the Maya Viewport with Hydra for Maya, which is currently a technology preview and is part of USD for Maya. There is more information available in the release notes of USD for Maya (autode.sk/mayaUSD) and you can follow the development on the Github repository of Hydra for Maya 😄(autode.sk/hydramaya)

Autodesk knows how to kill or make software mediocre. It's shameful but still for animators it's one of the best options. Modeling, vfx and other functions are completely obsolete or just more of the same
@@greenspeed666 it does't matter to me , I am not a person who always complain about something and comparing, you can see how AI is taking over everything,
Please update the real-time renderer that everyone hopes for. It is similar to Unreal Viewport, as well as game engines and sculpting functions. UE is also implanting Maya functions. Failure to implant UE functions in Maya is a death sentence.
Completely unrealistic and unfair to the Autodesk team if you think they can keep up with UE features. Epic is raking in billions of dollars every year that is pumped right back into the funding of UE. Please watch one of the Epic Dev deep dives and you’ll see how they are basically pioneering the future of computer graphics in games.
@@caden6305 they had Stingray, but killed off the project. So not really unrealistic nor unfair to ask for it. If blender can do it, then why not Autodesk? We dont need them to catch up with UE, just so that we can roughly understand how it will look in game engine, is already fine. Their realtime shaders are terrible and inaccurate.
@@Potatinized This is directly from the AutoDesk website on why they cancelled Stingray, "Artists are increasingly standardizing on other game engines for both games and VR/AR authoring. We continue to invest in building better, more interactive authoring tools for both games and design visualization, but will be pursuing stronger partnerships with third-party game engine developers rather than building our own engine." In other words, they realize if they were to build their own engine it would still end up being surpassed by other game engine developers. I know it's stupid to predict the future but with the direction Unreal is going in, I think in 5-10 years there will be little need for 3rd Party Apps in game dev. Everything will most likely be handled in engine.
@@Potatinized It is unrealistic though if they haven't already started working on it. Blender can do it because it is open source, Unreal also allows the community to contribute code, whereas Maya is closed source.
@@xox8717 it’s just pretty annoying to be minding our business and having people rubbing you blender in the face like, no Maya or max users is going on a blender subreddit and do that for example, like everybody got it man, it’s free and the UI is good looking, but let people work ffs aha (I use blender and Maya myself)

CAN YOU PLEASE ADD GROUPING/FUNCTIONS AND CONTAINERS WITH LABELS IN THE HYPERSHADE/NODE EDITOR. It is a nightmare to work with complex shaders when there is no way to organise it and it's baffling that every other program be it Unreal, Houdini, Mari, Substance Designer and even Blender has this basic functionality. Maya is a joke.
It'll come & will be better than Eevee, it's just takes time to implement such big projects and also their focus for the moment is materialX & Hydra usd workflow so the Studios can be happy first ;)
@@wallacesousuke1433 The cost isn’t the issue for me. I think Maya is fantastic, and I continue to use it. What seems to be happening is everyone had retreated to their trenches. The original trail blazers have vanished or don’t seem to care. Maya is best for animation, Houdini is the best for VFX, Cinema 4D motion graphics, Zbrush sculpting. Etc etc In my opinion all this has happened because the creative industry has been desperately lacking in vision. Users have made it too easy for software companies to stop having vision. After Effects is a classic example. Anything you actually want to do is a 3rd party plugin or script. They’re all great, but some are such obvious concepts, it’s mind boggling to think why they are not part of the main software. For the seven million, four hundred and thirty three licenses we pay to various software companies, it would be great if they made some effort. Or am I alone in thinking this? (Number of licenses are calculated on how it feels to my wallet rather than actual numbers)
Hey autodesk can you do develop real instances into Maya? That don´t explode when you merge meshes into them or add materials that will propagate to every instance.
Theres a reason Mudbox is so cheep compared to all their other products. My guess is Zbrush left it in the dust a decade ago and its probably more cost effective to keep Mudbox as a cheep and barebones little alternative than actually try to compete.
I would like to add to maya the operation in text field like in blender and cinema ,for example you want to set the radio us for the sphere the half of 0.75. Open the calculator should not been needed just to write 0.75/2 and maya does the operation.

Maya viewport is actually very capable and can handle more than what eevee can in terms of huge scenes, complex rigs, animation and simulations, it needs PBR workflow but they're trying to incorporate materialX & Hydra for USD since this is where the movie & VFX industries are heading to.

@@smashedlegends"fine tuning", may be that's what autodesk wants to believe but it's very far from the truth that they've done very little. And the migration issue. First, if the program is not capable of running a old setup, most often times it's fault of the program unless the setup is like more than 10 years old. Secondly, studio is the one who decides migrate or not. If they really want some kind of fancy function that the new version provides(even tho there is none in here) they would rather make the function as their own plugin rather than migrating their entire pipeline to the newere version. It's a very poor excuse that this is the reason why Maya hasn't made any progress for past 10 years.
I’ve been using Maya since v4. It was magical at first, as I got older, it’s still brilliant though more as a reliable work tool for me now. But seriously, Autodesk, if you don’t start marketing this product better, and I don’t mean getting down with ‘the kids’. I mean, What is this mess of a video? What serious professional would buy this product from this video? Start talking to ‘the professionals’, and actually asking them what they need and maybe try to become the ground breaking but if software you once were. Maybe come up with an idea or two we can all play around with. The excuse of ‘all studio pipelines are Maya based’ will only last until ‘all studio and pipelines are Maya no longer based’ and believe me, that may be sooner than you think.

Structurally as a 3D artist: 1. The modifier stack is useless, all it can do is turn it on, off and change places. Why is it needed if I cannot directly adjust the settings of these modifiers in it. 2. Smart Extrude, the idea is good, but the implementation is lame, there is not enough control over rotation and scaling, you can only move it. 3. Boolean Bevel did not live up to expectations, the bevel rests on points and cannot expand further by correcting these points, it still does not replace the slow-moving hardmesh plugin. Autodesk obviously doesn't keep up with what its competitors are doing. The blender annoys me, I don’t want to work in it, but I’m forced to, now I sit and study it, I hope I’ll get used to it, many of my colleagues have already adapted to the blender.
I just wish hitting the F key to frame an object actually worked. It works fine on simple scenes, fails once you get to a certain complexity. It's been broken for the 20 years I've used Maya. Even in professional tutorials, you can see them doing workarounds for it not working, or just avoiding hitting F out of habit. Everyone just lives with it. Fucking pathetic.
in presenting a new feature in such an expensive program - please use a professional speaker. The noise, reverb ,harsh "s" , bad acoustics and cheap microphone sound was very cringe worthy.
Blender is an awesome amateur program. No question about it. But if you want to work with the big ones, you have to choose Maya and Houdini. Sincerely Blender is a curiosity. But a waste of time.
Not for big projects, Blender at it's core is weak in every possible way. Half baked features won't be useful for big Studios, so it's mostly used by indie small ones.
