I would say one of my biggest mistakes was buying things just because they were a good/designer brand but are an older, not sought after style. For example, buying a ba&sh dress that’s been sitting in my closet for forever. It’s an older style and not in style anymore. Same thing with a “dress the population” dress. I would say “AVOID LABEL BLINDNESS!”

Mine isn't even brand specific, it's size specific. About 65% of my inventory that just won't sell, despite being good brands, are size XS. I used to say everyone needs clothes and pick up size XS / S indiscriminately in good brands. We have to remember and consider the fact that the average woman in the US is now a size 16, and picking up a ton of sizes XS and even S these days, isn't realistic.

Tbh I would have picked up that Eileen fisher for that price and just listed for around $25 and it would have probably sold quick. I know everybody has different business models but mine is move items fast. If I can triple my money I accept all offers. And even though I only have 430 items listed I sold almost 200 items last month. I always pick up Eileen in the bins but just price low if smaller size. Love your channel!! Thanks for the video!

I agree. I’m not a storage facility. If I give 83 cents for and item and I can make 10 $ or 15$ on it..I’m moving it and counting my money. Run of the mill basic pieces even if their a good brand don’t sell for a ton.. price they reasonable and move them…

That is one thing about reselling is keeping up with the coming & going clothing trends. Trying to sell something before it goes out of style or becomes over saturated!

I discovered a men's brand called AMIRI, by finding a cardigan in the women's sweaters. It had a leather tag, so I figured it was definitely worth a look up! Comps were insane for most of the items - t-shirts selling for over $100 - but there had never been any sweaters listed. The sweater retailed for $1700, so I picked it up and priced it at $375. Since that purchase I have, ironically, found a pair of men's embroidered and distressed skinny jeans that I have sold for $200, but the sweater is still sitting there after a year, with no action at all. Definitely an example of "not everything from a BOLO brand sells"!

I've only been reselling for a little over a year now and im still learning but trust me I've made so many mistakes not checking comps, overpaying, buying something for the brand but its not a desired style etc 🤦‍♀️. Watching resellers like yourself I've learned so much so thank you for all the tips and advice I've been doing so much better with my selections.

We've been doing this for years now, you will find that it will continue to happen. We get so frustrated because things will be super hot for enough time for us to feel confident in sourcing more, and then nothing sells. Out of nowhere, they will be hot again. It feels like you're being gaslit. 😂 Stay the course, trust your instincts, and try to learn something new every day. You'll be great!❤

Every single thrifted purchase (to resell), is gambling. There will be bad buys. I am a veteran/pioneer reseller…believe me, I know from experience, this is my main way of making money, since 2001. If I had all the money back from my bad buys/unsold items, I could probably retire😆

This is a good, and vulnerable video. I appreciate it. The thing I've discovered over the years is, you should use the data, but there are definitely going to be times when everything looks good, but it just doesn't sell. You just shake your head. Especially with clothes and shoes, you are taking a gamble that the right person, who not only wants that style, but also has the right size, will see your product. We can only try. ❤

I don't get all the complaints about small sizing, I sell tons of XXS, XS sizes, it's highly brand and style specific. Also platform specific- I sell lots of these small sizes on depop and they have a younger buyerbase. Petites as well- petite sizes sell really well in some brands. For example I went on posh to see what was selling in Madewell, and I saw tons of petite sizes sold as well as tall. Anyway last year I made so much money picking up XXS items and size 23 jeans, glad I didn't just leave money on the table by skipping them based on what other people said. I like to follow XXS and petite fashion discussion groups to find out what styles and brands these buyers are looking for. My experience is that I struggle to sell a lot of plus size clothing apparently, I used to do well selling Lane Bryant and Torrid apparently and I have a ton of them now sitting in my store. I think some plus size items do well still but I used to see blanket recommendations to pick up plus size items regardless of brand or style and it just doesn't work. I sell a lot more small sizes now than plus sizes. Moral of the story is just look up whatever you're planning to pick up. Just because it's a larger size doesn't mean it'll sell.
@la6136

I made this mistake with an Athleta coat. It was $18, and some sold listings were around $100. I was SO EXCITED, so I didn't check it over as well as I should have. The binding on the cuffs was coming undone on BOTH sides. I might list it and disclose flaws to recoup my losses, but dang. That was a mistake. Now, I won't pick up anything above $10 unless I KNOW it will sell and sell well!

I have a White House Black Market dress that I listed when I started reselling (November 2023). I paid $12 for this and never knew how to or that I should check comps and sell through rate. I have only recently started doing this - trying to be more intentional when purchasing items. I realize now that I shouldn't pay up for things unless I am certain they will bring a big profit. I started with the mindset "ooh, lululemon! I must buy". "ooh, madewell! I must buy"! Needless to say, I have a lot more lulu and madewell (among other brands) that I have been sitting on! I appreciate your honesty; it often seems as if youtubers have these fantastic lucky streaks and magically find awesome, profitable items. It is helpful to know that you have some regrets and that you are still learning (and passing that knowledge on to us) - I hope that I will gain knowledge from watching videos like yours! BTW looking at that dress now, I realize it is so UGLY!! HA! :)

I sold a dress I had for 5 years. When I bought it, it was a Boden dress, small size, 100% linen, cute with yellow/white floral print. I thought it would sell for $30 or $35. I jumped at the offer for $15. I also bought identical J. Crew sweaters a few years ago except for the color. They were size XS, one was ivory and one was beige and listed at the same time. The ivory one sold in a few days for about $42, I still have the beige one. I like the advice of don't get stuck buying an item without checking how well that item does currently. Also quality doesn't translate to sales is so true. I have a few Lafayette 148 blazers in smaller sizes that I am still sitting on after a long time. Also some mystery quality items sitting unlisted because I don't have any information on them. Sometimes comps can be confusing, especially on poshmark. They don't say how long ago the item sold and identical items can sell for $20 or $90. Also be careful for flaws. I have bought dresses missing belts, shoes with no size printed, and other flaws that I should have caught if I was more careful and deliberate going though things at the store.

I'm a new reseller. I just began at the end of January. I am not from a large city where I am finding endless designer/desirable pieces at thrift stores or the Goodwill outlet, so I GEEK when I find the very few "nice" brands that other sellers recommend. Instant add to cart, regardless of size or style. My business model (experiment, really) is continuing to pick up these "do not buy" sizes or styles in hopes that RU-vidrs such as yourself tell other resellers not to pick them up and therefore I can hopefully make a sale in an eventual less saturated market. Is this a good idea? No. Will I stop doing this? Also no. You'll have to rip these non-Dojo style 7 For All Mankind jeans out of my cold, dead hands! LOL.

Question, do you promote on ebay? If so, what is a good percentage to use? Do you also feel sellers are listing items really cheap? I don't know 🤷🏼‍♀️ I also feel like blazers in general don't sell well? I could be wrong but I feel more and more business people working from home these days.

So helpful but honestly, I would have picked those items up as well. I like to move things quickly so I just keep dropping the price and upping the promotion on EBay until it sells. My goal is to make something on it, even if it’s just a couple dollars. That’s better than donating it back. If i only have a couple dollars in something, I’m good with selling it for $12-$15. My worst pick up recently was a talking toy, new with tags, that is stuck in demo mode. Ugh! My most awesome find recently was a brand new Coach wallet at Goodwill for $1.99. Keeping!

Joes are hard to sell, I sold some about 3 years ago and it was easy but now they are definitely not easy to sell. Some of my dresses are not selling at all. I’m a lot more fickle on some j crew items and I really only shop for items I know will sell. The only caveat is for dresses that have interesting pattern/print.

Since you sell on ebay and poshmark, would you know if the same rule applies to listing titles concerning the word vintage. On ebay, you can use the abbreviation VTG and when someone searches for something vintage, VTG is automatically picked up as vintage. Do you know if this is the same as on poshmark? I contacted poshark but the answer I received didn't help at all.... They pretty much said the algorithms are all different and that everyone is shown something different in their feeds. If a title didn't matter, we wouldn't have to fill that information out in the first place. ANY help on this would be very much appreciated.

Re the Joe's Jeans: pretty sure they are men's, esp as the half waist is 18.75 (37.5 full). Seems like an unusual style tho 😅 I can relate. I hit the bins over the weekend and grabbed a Burberry London trench. Wasn't sure if it was auth but I figured I'd take a shot. The upside was tremendous for a $1.57 item. It is indeed a fake. But it's a pretty darn good one. Nonetheless, I now have a stylish trench I can do nothing with. You live and learn and you thrift again, lol.
