9:20 - Additional to "arte" as a french-german channel there is also "3Sat", which is a channel in coorporation between the public TV providers from Germany (ARD/ZDF), Austria (ORF) and Switzerland (SF). It mostly features cultural related content (like lots of documentaries, full theater plays or the daily cultural magazine "kulturzeit") and broadcasts the news programs from all three countries (tagesschau/de, ZIB2/Austria, 10vor10/Switzerland). "3Sat" has the purpose to connect the german speaking populations of Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Ja, "TV-Total" und "Schlag den Raab", sowie alle anderen Raab-Events, waren super. Zumindest gibt es noch "Schlag den Star" mit Elton auf PRO7. :)

Crime scene shows: Try Heldt or Hubert und Staller, the latter being on Bavarian tv (BR). They're both comedy-like crime scene shows, Heldt being located in Bochum in the Ruhrgebiet, and Hubert und Staller being Bavarians.

1:30 - Fun fact: the third channels are actually the content provider for "Das Erste" (or ARD); sometimes alone, sometimes several channels combined. This was done to ensure that the cultural differences of the different parts of germany are reflected in the program - through the regional "third" channels and the primary program "Das Erste". 5:25 - ... and thats also why the "Tatort" series portraits different police departments all over Germany. This was also done to show the regional cultures/flavours of Germany through this series. Each "Tatort" from each region is produced by one of the third channels (NDR produces the "Tatort" from northern Germany, BR the "Tatort" from southern Germany, WDR the "Tatort" from western Germany, MDR the "Tatort" from east Germany and so forth). For international viewers: This could be compared with the NCIS series from the US (NCIS LA, NCIS New York, NCIS New Orleans).

4:40 - "Lindenstrasse" was actually inspired by "Coronation Street".
@ElchiKing

As for Bernd: It all originated from a show called "Tolle Sachen", in which Bernd had to test many "inventions" of the crazy inventor/scientist Briegel (who was a bush). In this show also the stunt-sheep Chili played a major role. In the first "Nachtschleife" aired on the 1st of January 2003 after a show called "Bravo Bernd" which was basically the last program point of KiKa. It was established that Bernd can not get out of the TV-picture because of technichal reasons, while his friends Briegel and Chili could go. Over the years, the Nachtschleifen got more parodistic (e.g. about call-in-television) and absurd because the viewers aged with Bernd... As someone who was a child when Tolle Sachen started, the Nachtschleifen were definitely fun to watch (and a reason to stay up longer, because it is also fun for your parents to watch)

8:40 - The variety/game live shows on saturday evening are a very old german TV tradition. It is almost similar to the Late-Night variety show tradition of the US. Much like the US talkshows sparked the biggest TV personalities (Carson, Letterman, Leno), the german saturday evening shows made hosts like Kulenkampff, Carrell or Gottschalk the biggest celebrities. The length of 90 to 120 minutes is very likely a result of these shows beeing a "home replacement" for long variety theater shows you would go with your family saturday evening (the circus or vaudeville beeing the oldest of these traditions): Instead of going there, the public broadcasters brought such a variety show of same quality and length to your home via TV. BTW: These saturday evening shows created an artificial english word (like Handy for cellphones), that is only used in Germany: Showmaster (having the actual meaning of "host" in English). The private channels began to extend these shows to up to 5 hours because it boosts the ratings especially in the late hours. If you begin a new show at 2200h, the race for ratings resets, while a 5 hour show keeps the viewers watching that private TV channel instead of switching away or even off, so these long shows often have the better ratings at the late hours (and of course are cheaper to produce, since adding 2 or 3 hours doesnt encrease the productions cost much - at least not as much than having to produce a complete new show for the later hours). So this is a trick to have better ratings at late hours for lower production costs.

Martha, maybe you don't want to brag about it, but without the English we wouldn't have the 'ARD' which is called "Das Erste" only for marketing reasons. The ARD is 'made up' of a pool of several regional broadcasting corporations. In former times this was more visible in the program. If you switched on the tele before 20:00 o'clock you would only get regional news and advertising on the 'ARD' channel of your region. Only after the Tagesschau at 20:15 everyone in Germany would see the same program on the 'ARD' channel. The regional broadcasting corporations, you listed at 1:32 *are* practically the ARD, because ARD means "Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland" (translates to something like: working pool of the broadcasting corporations of the Federal Republic of Germany). And now to the English background: As in all occupied areas in Germany after 1945 the allies did control the media, like newspapers, the radio and TV stations. In 1948 the British occupation forces allowed the predecessor of "your" regional ARD station 'NDR', the 'NWDR' to broadcast television programmes for the British occupation zone (the North-Western German federal states). To implement best practices in public broadcasting the then 'NWDR' was modelled after the BBC regarding journalistic standards, independence from government, public funding, regulation by public law etc. Since then the Tagesschau is the main television news program of Germany, only produced by the regional ARD station 'NDR' in Hamburg and distributed via the ARD network to the whole of Germany - that's also the reason why the same Tagesschau runs at 20:00 at all other regional ARD stations. So without kidding one of the best decisions made by the British for the democratic and socio-eoconmic development of post-war Germany next to the reconstruction of the demolished Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg! Any German with the slightest historical awareness is really thankful for that! At least I am :D

There's still another fun fact about Willy Brandt and that button: When he pushed it, at first nothing happened. Tere was a communication problem between him and the guy, who really had to switch between bw and colour. So the program switched about one or two seconds later. But - third fun act - almost nobody realised that, because almost nobody had a colour-TV at that time. Without the exception of "big bang theory" I hardly watch private programs. Information is much better on public TV and I don't like most of the program interrupting all the advertising. And the advertising during the program is so small, that a third of the screen is still used to show the film (or show or whatever). And then there are countdowns at the end of the advertising to show the beginning of the film, but the countdown is followed by just two or three more advertisings, and to my astonishment they really start the film (I hope the sarcasm was obvious in English). Without any further sarcasm: I don't know about the situation in other countries, but in Germany the quality difference between public and private TV is that wide, so for me the choice is pretty clear.

I didn't know that "Das Erste" wasn't called ARD any more. I still call it ARD. ARD stands for "Allgemeine Rundfunkanstalt Deutschlands" (with a nice genitive!), and it's the name of the organization that operates "Das Erste" as well as all the third programs (or for you Brits: "programmes", although I'm always tempted to pronounce the e when I read this ;)). They also operate many public radio stations, while I've never heard of a radio station that was operated by ZDF, I think there are none (correct me if I'm wrong).

Some tipps for german shows (many have clips/full shows here on YT): "Kunst & Krempel" (BR) "Die große Show der Naturwunder" (Das Erste) "Schlag den Star" (Pro7) "Deutschlands Superhirn" (ZDF) "Inas Nacht" (Das Erste) "5 gegen Jauch" (RTL) "Das ist spitze!" (Das Erste) "Joko vs Klaas" (Pro7) "Der Quiz-Champion" (ZDF) "Kitchen Impossible" (VOX) "Grill den Henssler" (VOX) "Phoenix - Der Tag" (Phoenix) "Die Phoenix-Runde" (Phoenix) "presseclub" (Das Erste) "Die 2 - Gottschalk & Jauch gegen alle" (RTL) "Die ultimative Chart-Show" (RTL) "Bachmann Preis - Klagenfurter Tage der deutschsprachigen Literatur" (3Sat)

Just a clarification about TV advertising: The public channels (similar to BBC) can only do advertising for 20 minutes per day on a workday. As you explained, after 8 PM (20 Uhr) and on sundays and holidays it's not allowed for them. Advertisement only makes up about 10% of their financing, the bulk of it comes from the mandatory fees. In comparison, the private channels contain about 3-4 hours of ads per channel and day. Many of the peculiarities like Tagesschau at 20 Uhr, same broadcast on two or more channels, Tatort on Sundays etc. are of course historically rooted. There is no explanation in today's reality for that. It's just always been like that for one reason or another, mostly from decades ago. I think we're gonna see some big changes in the coming years. Look at the youth nowadays, they're are rarely watching TV anymore, they sometimes cannot fathom that you can't just "click the next episode" but instead have to wait for a week until the next episode is broadcast... About Bernd das Brot, my grandma says she subjected herself to 20 minutes of it at night, out of curiosity. She then remarked it's ideal programming for a mental institution. She also said about music with auto-tuned vocals: "I can hear that! How stupid do they think we are, they are not fooling anyone, they cannot sing!" Go Oma!

3:35 - I also wish the english shows would also be broadcast with the original language and not only dubbed - but the problem is: The german channels are all broadcast for free over Astra satellite, so when german channels buy a show from the US or the UK they would have to pay much more licence fees since non dubbed shows then are not only watched by people in Germany but also all over Europe where Astra is available. Dubbed in German these shows mostly arent watched in France, Italy or Spain, so they are cheaper to buy to be broadcast via Astra satellite for free. The original soundtracks as alternative are mostly only available through encoded digital channels, that are only available/decodable in Germany and cost extra money.

Hahaha, what the heck Martha? 'Bernd das Brot' is made out of a spongy material but he also obviously looks like a typical *English* loaf of bread - or a German 'Kastenbrot', one of the lesser known varities of German bread, which is not very popular after all - maybe thats the reason why he is always so depressed?! But of course you may be right after all: English bread is quite similar to a sponge :D :D :D

I haven't had my own TV set since about 2000 or so. OK, in 2004 or 05 I've had a TV card in my PC, but then I noticed that every time when I didn't know what to do, I turned on the TV program and watched any kind of crap that was aired, so I noticed it being something like a waste basket for time. Which made me take the card back out of my PC and never look back to it. Nowadays, I rather watch series in their original language, like on Netflix or other services, and for the little good content that comes on the public channels, there's the Mediathek where you can watch it as well. So I'm really happy to not have a TV any more, and to be spared all the advertising!

About the swearing on German TV... people are not supposed to do that. However, basically nobody cares. That's because we don't have any hypocritical moral standards like other countries do. Nobody gets bleeped out on national television. Freedom of speech in Germany means exactly that.

Actually I had the impression they're going much more at it with sexual, fecal and other sensible subjects than on German tv. On very rare occasions they used bleep but only as a humorous part of certain gags it seems. +Guido Rehder Redefreiheit ist doch nix als Illusion, die 'political correctness' Zensur aus USA und GB schwappt in den letzten Jahren immer mehr zu uns rüber, das merkt man überall. I nearly watch any german TV at all, besides Sports, Docus and "Die Anstalt" & "Heute Show". The rest is so boring, repeating and generic. It's a shame that we pay so much ( many millions a month !) and get THAT ! PS: sadly a "Krimi" is not a crime thriller anymore in germany, it is a soap with murder and a murderer. I can only watch american and british crime series (Luther, Sherlock, Elementary, Ray Donovan...) , 100-code or the billiantly excelent "Hannibal" -if you don't know Hannibal yet, you have to give it a try.

I don't think 10 Euro is correct. The regular 'Rundfunkbeitrag' per household is €17.50/month (maybe it's different in apartment buildings). I don't think Germans can handle America's 24/7 TV with 300 channels to choose from...but, from 0300 t0 0500 there are too many infomercials on... Our History channel does not show history anymore and our Music TV has no music anymore either...

Hello dear Keith! Yes I know that '& Co.' is 'and company'. :) I just realised there is another one called 'Elefant, Tiger & Co.'. I think it's quite sweet how they use the same structure for the zoo shows. :D I'm missing a good music channel on German TV. There used to be 'Deluxe Music' but that has since disappeared. Perhaps I'm in the wrong area to pick it up. :O

A good mainstream overview, even if it was childlike. But I did the same thing when I lived in London. Luckily, you have called ARTE, the best excuse for the scrap that runs otherwise. For a strange reason, the intelligent, intellectual programs are usually shown very late, if at all. The working people have to go to work early.Günter Jauch, who you had mentioned said once: The TV makes the stupid dumber and the clever smarter, It annoys me again and again that I do not get BBC etc. here (via satellite it should be possible) that would be nevertheless in the European interest, but now it is too late. But what is really shocking: FFS the USA have chosen the trumpet trump???!!!.

I hope that in the future series and films will be shown in their original language. It makes learning and talking english a lot easier. Actually Bernd das Brot is a really sad and depressing character who is fun to watch but even if it's just a puppet I feel sorry for him.^^ Sometimes I think the people of kika must have smoked something to get their ideas :D

space potatoe most people just want to be entertained and not educated, and the submissive English spoken in Germany is already far advanced. Apart from this... on amazon, netflix and other channels you have the choice. Have a walk round the super sucessful countries/economies like Japan and Korea and you will be in for a big surprize.

That was really interesting to watch even for Germans ;-) I wonder why you didn't mention Die Sendung mit der Maus, which is a real classic on German television. But maybe you'll get to that... ;-) About German dubbed series like The Big Bang Theory: I would love it if you could watch those in English! The German synchronisation is really bad, I always watch this shows in English. Do you have also "trash TV" in England, like "Frauentausch" und "Schwiegertochter gesucht"? Is it as bad as here in Germany?

I suppose trash tv depends on one's opinion, but I don't like shows like 'The Only Way is Essex' or 'Made in Chelsea'. They are 'glamourous' reality shows, mostly scripted. Not my kind of thing. :P I'm surprised I didn't mention Die Sendung mit der Maus too, it must have completely slipped my mind. :O Die Maus deserves one video all for him/herself. ^_^ 'Frauentausch' in England would be 'Wife Swap'. I can't say if it is made to the same quality as 'Frauentausch' as I never saw it, but maybe for you it would be interesting to watch some clips of 'Wife Swap' on YT. Thanks for your comments as always. :) :)

I don't like those shows either. That's one of the reasons why I don't watch TV at all, because there are hardly any good shows without a lot of advertising. The other reason is I don't own a TV, so... :D Thank you for always answering the comments! Will there be a video today?

wiseguysfanjojo yes, the video is almost ready to go live. It's about animal sounds. :)

Typical entlish-speakers-mistake spotted: You said "Familienseri_ - but it's Serie, the e isn't silent. (I don't want to nitpick, but that's the no 1 mistake english natives make so I wanted to point it out for the benefit of everybody who wants to learn german.)
@Filtertuetchen
@Filtertuetchen 8 лет назад
But you have to mention that at the word ending "-ie" in German the "e" is commonly not spoken, the word "Serie" is an exception.

well you were talking about the better shows here from germany so thumbs up for you! but as a german i HATE german tv. i don't watch any of it. the 'nachmittagsprogramm' is so bad and all scripted realty it's aweful. you can hear your IQ dying while watching those shows. exspecially rtl and rtl2. those are the worst. even the daily soaps or other series are just rip-offs from amarican shows. there are just a few good german shows and that is a shame
