1:50 The fact that it's literally a plot point in the Anne series that she insists upon spelling her name with an "E" at the end and the person who made this tape still spelled it "Ann"
Holy shit the secret life of Barbie, I saw a rebroadcasting of that documentary like 15 years ago while down with a fever and thought that I just hallucinated the whole thing for years after. I've never felt so validated in my life
>"and then Ken would bash her and she'd bash him back, and then Francie would try to kind of get in the middle of it and then they' both bash Francie" omg that had me rolling
Having played with dolls and toys with my own daughters, in a genuinely stable household, can confirm that imaginations get ridiculous. My heart goes out to that Barbie fan if she really was play-acting what she saw in her home life, but odds are she was like every other kid and just enjoying playing with absurdity. "And then Grandpa Pig ate Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig, and then Peppa said 'You spit them out Grandpa Pig!' and then Grandpa ate Peppa, but then Rainbow Dash did a sonic rainboom on Grandpa Pig's tummy and they went PYWOOOOOSH out of his tummy like, 'AAAAAAH THANK YOU RAINBOW DAAAASH'" -- My 4-year-old
I am a huge Martha fan and have been for 30 years. The woman taught me so many things that I cherish from baking to crafting to homesteading. She is incredibly intelligent and has a huge knowledge base on so many topics from food to travel to homesteading to fine furniture to vintage dishes to wine and on and on. She. gets interested in something and she learns everything about it. Her memory must be incredible. She has such an interesting history from being a model to a Stockbroker to a caterer to a magazine founder to a CEO of a large corporation and TV host. She definitely had a weirdly flat affect in the early days. Im not sure why she felt the need to come off so unimpressed. She did have a huge knowledge base but she seems to love learning so I don’t believe she was ever truly bored by a guess explaining something. She spent her life teaching people like me about all the things she loves so it makes no sense to come off as uninterested in what a guess was teaching, no matter how basic. Her affect has changed a lot as she’s gotten older. Now she laughed a lot more and is able to laugh at herself- something she NEVER did in the old days. She was also really impatient with children in the early days because they couldn’t execute whatever they were doing as perfect as Martha would. But that has also changed a lot over the years as she learned to let go and had her own grandchildren.
@@daneekaplan4284 woah she did a lot of big things! thanks for sharing! never knew of her true impact; i grew up in a different world where i only knew the SNL version of Martha.
@@daneekaplan4284 I can understand her coming off as being unimpressed when she is trying to learn something. A lot of people I know get exceptionally quiet when they are concentrating real hard on listening, and sometimes, they come off as bored or uninterested.
I've got heaps of Video8 tapes I want to make a series of, but the machine for playing them died after two. Spoiler: They're all anime, porn or Hollywood films, likely copied from rented tapes.
I can tell you exactly how Martha Stewart got so famous. Between her show and her magazine, her career was this perfect amalgamation of everything a bored housewife might want to try, from crafts, recipes, home improvement, DIY projects, gardens, potted plants, minor yard and landscape work, etc.. all presented by a woman who at least seemed very wholesome on screen, and made it all look easy for any other middle-aged woman to do everything she did. Keep in mind that this was before there was very much to see on the internet. Before Facebook, Pinterest, Tik Tok, Etsy, and wherever else people get this kind of content from. She was like the 90's version of Julia Child, but did far more than just cooking. People like my mom watched the show religiously every day it aired, subscribed to the magazine, bought her branded kitchenware.. she had deals with some major store like Walmart or Home Depot I think, for selling her brand of gardening and home DIY tools. She just found the perfect niche at the right time, before the internet really evolved and random people on social media started sharing home and garden tips. And then she engaged in insider trading and became a felon, which tarnished her reputation a little bit.
And the thing about Martha too was that she came along during the time when being a housewife or a stay-at-home mom was really looked down upon by society, even by other women who saw it as a relic of the past. We were just coming out of the yuppie era (Working Girl, anyone?). I had a home ec teacher in high school who loved Martha, because she made it respectable to be a homemaker again. It's easy to dismiss Martha's work as being "things for bored housewives to do", but she really did legitimize in the eyes of the public work that women had been doing mostly thanklessly since the start of the industrial revolution, if not earlier.
@@wormdoodles that’s a really interesting addition, as a person born in late 90’s and living outside of USA seeing the social changes of another time and country is fascinating.
"It's almost as sad as Rick's entire family was, after he f*ckin' biffed the ice cream challenge." My biggest laugh out loud moment of the entire video. Thank you. I wish I had kept all my old VHS tapes. I'd send them to you. I used to tape stuff off TV all the time, and I'd often leave in the commercials. Small side note: When I got my own VCR, the first thing I ever taped off TV was the Simpsons episode, where Bart falls down a well.
It's so interesting how Martha comes across as bored, apathetic, relaxed, or passive-aggressive to different people. I guess it goes to show how our biases influence what we see, how our expectations for hosts have shifted over time, and how we all read social cues differently.
It's because she was putting on an act the entire time. She wasn't that sort of person atall, she was a very underhanded, backstabby intelligent criminal, hence how she got away with it for so long. People pick up on that, ever been around a sociopath? Do their damnedest to smile and make sure you don't know they are tareing everything apart behind your back lol "I do ALL this cooking and housey things, and that's a GOOOOOD thing *souless smile while she steals lots of money*"
@@CrashHeadroom I think the "Martha Steward is a felon" meme exaggerates her crime because it is funny. You really don't have to be a sociopath for casual financial crime... The woman wasn't running some kind of conspiracy, she illegally sold stock once and only because a friend of hers gave her insider information.
I love how some of those romantic ads from the 90's have this surreal, dream-like quality to them. Feels like you're gazing into a rose-tinted past that's slowly fading away. Feels like I should be listening to vaporwave while watching them.
I dunno, man, I like the fact that it's obvious that Martha isn't acting. She's just being herself, not selling or overhyping stuff nor resorting to flowery words to have us enraptured. I personally find it refreshing to just see an icon like her was simply being themselves even when a camera was rolling.
It’s a theory about the Presto sauce industry. The idea is that Presto was made out of aborted fetuses. And hosting satanic rituals of child sacrifice to make their pasta sauce taste so good. Tapes were sopposedly found containing footage of the sacrifice. Unfortunately they had the wrong company it was actually Ragu.
Every kid I knew growing up had a 'Nails All Over Her Body' Barbie. It's one of those classic toys like "Screams in Agony Whenever You Stretch Him' Stretch Armstrong and 'Only Speaks in Karl Marx Quotes' Teddy Ruxpin.
Props to Ian for sitting through and scanning probably days worth of terrible quality Martha Stewart VHS recordings for our entertainment. Also I completely forgot that Martha’s a convicted felon and I nearly lost it when you reminded me
Oh man, the Martha clips unearthed a forgotten memory for me. I used to watch this show called "Whatever, Martha" which was basically Martha's daughter and her friend roasting various segments from her show. Not sure how well it holds up now, but at the time I got a kick out of it. Anyway, great work as usual, Ian! Still love the Mystery Tapes series!
Considering that Martha Stewart is a good friend of Snoop Lion, and has been for years, I like to imagine she's just high as a kite for most of the segments. It makes sense to me. The relaxed demeanor (bordering on boredom or lethargy) during most of the segments, the excitement when it's time to make some food, and the fact she came up with Spaghetti Pie and thought it would make a good 'snack'.
That’s what I thought, but I looked it up and apparently she doesn’t really smoke that much. Though she didn’t start out as a host, she was a caterer turned cookbook writer turned tv show host as part of a broader media empire, so honestly I don’t think she was ever super notable as a host.
Oh my god I remember the german version of "The Big Moment"! There was an episode where a dad had to learn all the 151 original pokemon so he could recognize them via looking at their sprite. Great moment of TV that I'll never forget.
ian: “i imagine kmart is really nostalgic for anyone who remembers going to one” what he means: “kmart evokes nostalgia in people who’ve been there” what i thought he meant: “boy kmart sure misses when anyone even remembered stepping foot in its doors”
I don't doubt Kmart is a bit sad they can't go back to the 90s...Even the 2000s would be better than now. Kmart was a frequent place for shoes and kids clothing for my family when I was a kid. When someone mentioned Kmart sneakers, I understood what that meant.
Other RU-vidrs: sneakily put ads in the middle of the show and annoy me Me: literally always skips it Ian: politely puts his advertisement at the end of the video, puts effort into making it an entertaining skit Me: for you Ian I will watch it.
As a real estate agent in the Washington area, I have toured countless homes with Sun tunnels and they really do a lot for spaces bathrooms with no windows, but don't create the problems like maintenance and cleaning that a skylight can create. Sun Tunnels are the goat.
OK. I am from the UK and I remember when Diana died and everyone recorded it. I don't know why, but for some fucking reason that just MADE sense back then. We used to record everything. When was the last time you recorded something? It's been at least 25 years for me. Anyway, I am just shocked to see that even AMERICANS record the funeral. WHY?! Did we think we were going to rewatch it? Hey! Gather up the kids, lets watch Diana's funeral again. I'd be surprised if even ONE person can say that have watched it more than once. And if you did, please please please tell me why. Anyway great episode. This is the best show on youtube.
@@johnalogue9832 Not the royals in general, mostly just Diana. I don't know where from but I distinctly remember the phrase "America's Princess" on TV after she died.
I have exactly one brief recollection of the day tape 4 was recorded. I was in elementary school, it was just after breakfast, and my mom was standing in front of the TV, yelling to my dad in the next room "I can't find anything for the kids to watch, every fucking channel is just Princess Diana's funeral!" The memory ends there, but it's a little crazy to think that somewhere else in the world, at that very moment, that one specific little plastic tape was ticking away in someone's VCR.
I live in the UK and have never been to a Kmart, and will never get the chance to go to one, but found a selection of recorded tapes on the internet that were played in the shops in the 80’s. The random crappy songs are consistently interjected by mentions of Martha Stewart and lawn furniture, as well as kitchenware. The moment I saw that Martha Stewart Kmart ad, there was a moment of wonderful recognition I have no reason having.
i'm an american and fairly young, and one of my earliest memories is waking up at 3 in the morning to the K-mart lightbulb hovering around a white void while the logo fades into the background. there's something comforting about it but also deeply unsettling. shame how they've all closed now.
Grecian 5 is the weirdest name I've ever heard of for a hair dye, or pretty much any product to be honest. Grecian 5 sounds more like a planet from Star Trek.
I'm confused how some planets have numbers in their name when there's multiple named after the same thing. One planet was called wolf with a string of numbers
I know they arent the same, but as an australian its always weird when people bring up the american kmarts basically being dead. Theres roughly 234 stores named Kmart in Australia.
@@GtoZeren just dug a little deeper, they are super similar in branding and concept but not the same. Thats cool to know, do they have blue light specials?
I don't know if they were all the same but I know why my K-mart died. While Walmart, Target and Publix were upgrading into the new millenia or...yah know, doing basic renovations K-mart still looked like it did in the 60's. I mean kids would literally dare each other to go inside the clientelle was so seedy. Just guys in trench coats with pedo staches, ghosts and leaking cielings as far as the eye could see; that's my last memory of K-mart.
I installed a couple of those "sun tunnels" when I was younger. They really "don't" work that well. When the sun's at the right angle to it it gives a good amount of light, but that's only for like an hour a day. Otherwise it's no more light than a blinded window.
Interesting! The place I currently live has one in the bathroom and it has basically eliminated the need for lights during the day. Maybe it has something to do with location, not only on the house but on the Earth.
We had this "The Big Moment" format here in Chile too, it was actually based on a japanese show were a member of a family had to past a test usually an acrobatic one. They had one week to train the test and then they had ONE chance to do it in the studio and like 2 to 3 minutes to do it. It was actually a pretty beloved show in Chile. It was known as "Si se la puede, gana" sorta like "If you can do it, you win"
Brutalmoose, I have been a fan for years. I have watched every video you have ever made. Mystery Tapes has and will continue to be a core memory in my adult life. I am very nostalgic and love to reminisce over a simpler, albeit still technological, time. Thank you for making these. I am writing this to you to humbly ask for more. That perhaps my small voice will be enough to push you to make just that one more episode. To push through what is doubtlessly countless hours and hard work for you and possible doubt about the continuation of the series. You have given me and my loved ones a fond memory together with each unique episode. So thank you. Damnit, I love mystery tapes. --Paul
I always remember that episode of Fraiser where the Cranes went to the Antiques Roadshow with their antique clock from their ancestor and believed they are descendants of the Romanovs the Russian Royals but it turned out that their ancestor was just a maid who worked for the Romanov's
i just wanted to say thank you for everything over the years, ive watched your channel since the Isle of the Dead/Lego City days, your channel has grown so much and it puts a smile on my face to see your videos still, thank u !!!!!!!
Same! I watched him when I was a kid and he was talking about video games and I think he's the only RU-vidr I watched back then that I still watch now as an adult
My RU-vid feed is so different now than it was 8-9 years ago, or even just 3-4 years ago… but through all of the changes and creators who I’ve lost interest in or have faded away, the one consistently high quality channel has been Brutalmoose. Even though his content is very different now, he still feels authentic and true to himself, like every video he makes is for him rather than an algorithm and that just makes his videos so much more fun to watch than any other creator I’ve seen
Really happy to be making more Mystery Tapes! I didn't mean to have such a large gap between series, I just didn't have any fresh tapes for a little while there. I hope your own Mystery Tape journey has been fruitful!
@@brutalmoose been finding a bunch of great commercials and old Canadian programming, it's really cool and entertaining to go through all the old content like a time capsule of the period it was recorded
Haha. Thats hilarious, the billions of unused tapes go from their original shelf to your shelf unused. I get it tho, my grandma recorded everything, everything. We had in our house at least 1k tapes. Doubt they are still around.
As an Asian-American, full respect for that rice washing segment. People in other countries (The UK is an example) will cook their rice before washing it, leaving it a soggy mess when they put... hot steaming rice... through sink water. 😐 Good to see SOMEONE trying to teach people the correct way to do it.
Dude yes, I'm Pacific islander and rice is a daily must. When I used to live in california, This one time I was over at my white friends house for dinner and when they said they cooked rice I was so excited, then horribly disappointed, it was flaky and dry. I don't wanna say they cooked it wrong, but I showed them the japanese style, or at least the way I was taught to prepare rice.
That lady bashing the barbies together in a domestic dispute was really surreal to me. Never thought of regular adults roleplaying with their toys like we did as kids.
I've always loved Martha Stewart, but I completely forgot how laid back and calm she is on her show. It's nice to see, actually. I've gotten so used to these loud, overly-excited, overly-positive show hosts that she does come across as super relaxed.
A lot of 90s and early 2000s cooking shows were like that. Calming shows where a nice lady in an expensive kitchen taught you how to make something. There's a recent show called Baked in Vermont (nothing to do with pot) that's a lot like that. Just nice to watch.
@@DipseyDex I absolutely love their friendship. Snoop is such a sweetheart, I swear. The cutest thing I ever saw was the behind the scenes of the filming of Bones where the director was commenting on how he was crushing on Pam Grier. It was so cute.
If you plan on making another Brutal foods, I'd love to see you try to make the "spaghetti pie" based on nothing more than the content of that VHS tape.
You'd think it would be good to watch but I feel like spaghetti pie is the 90's equivalent of what housewives were doing back in the 50's encasing everything in gelatin. It would be like "yup, it's cold spaghetti..."
I love the retro mystery tapes! Had a good laugh at the comment "She often rides the line between sounding either really relaxed or really bored." LMAO XD
It's the day after the forced holiday for the Queen's burial or whatever here in the UK so seeing the Princess Diana recording there was a lil close to home, great vid n love this series 👏

Ian I came to your channel for Brutalfoods and stayed for retro game, movies, and VHS review. Keep up the good work, I'm glad you finally did another mystery tapes
The clown commercial legitimately seems like something in an analog horror series on youtube. The strange timeless void they seem to be trapped in with that clown is just too eerie
Yah it's mystery tapes one of if not my fave series from you! I love the retro asthetic and how authentic it is with you using an actual tape based camcorder! And it being in 4:3 ratio. It hits my love of the 90s / 80s so much!! Thank you again my dude!
Ian: ”I lose my appetite when I see streched cheese in commercials” That same Ian: ”I am advertising cereal by vomiting milk on it. That should sell well!”
Seeing the local commercials gets me. I grew up in Spokane, so the cricket’s and the Spokane Children’s Theatre ads was an unexpected treat. Awesome video as usual!
WHAT?!?! I missed a tape video!!!?? Hell yeah. Also I'm convinced Martha was just baked as fuck for every episode. She sounds EXACTLY like I do when listening to someone explain something when I'm baked.
I've been through a strenuous work week, and attended a booze-filled thanksgiving party with co-workers. As an Introvert myself, coming home after these activities then seeing this video on my recommended made me grab a nice hot cup of coffee, wrap myself in a blanket, and simply enjoy. Thanks for these kinds videos, Ian. You're my favorite RU-vidr who gives glimpses of the past thru these mysterious video tapes with an aesthetic I sorely missed and took for granted when I was a young tot. Cheers and more success to you!
This is truly my favorite series and I’m glad to see this again! It’s that time of season where I can cozy up, have my warm cat next to me and just watching this 😌 It feels like Christmas now
Just have to say I love how you recorded this with that old VHS box style resolution. Apparently it is viewable without the black borders in the default view. I never knew you could upload and view it like this. Pretty cool man.
I love the way you use genuine archival terminology and act like we're digging through a cozy museum, and the jazz is just the cherry on top my god THE JAZZ.
I love this series and I immediately got super sad for the ice cream guy when he failed. Things like that come with such a strong feeling of powerlessness for me.
Leaving a comment for engagement because I just love Mystery Tapes, it's so relaxing. But I can't think of anything so I'll just say that Cricket's, the restaurant advertised, is still open in Coeur d'Alene Idaho. So that's neat
Ian, I love when you do these series! You've been killing it with content, don't get me wrong, but the mystery tape episodes take me back when I was younger in the 80s/90s. By the way, I remember there were services from Blockbuster or Hollywood Video that could recover lost content from VHS tapes by rebuilding the residue left behind from the original recording. Hope you can do an episode of that one day. Happy Turkey Day! 🙂
I cannot put into words how much I love this series. Growing up, my dad worked at an electronics store where he always brought home VCR players, and TVs. But the best part was when people left their tapes in the players and we got to watch a fun movie. I remember watching the commercials still though. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the top notch content.
i liked watching martha stewart with my mom as a kid since she was more straight to the point and calm. it was annoying trying to watch a home making show that have people talking over all themselves and going off topic. its like those recipe websites that have like 90 page essays before they even tell you the ingredient list.
*explains how she came up with the recipe after disposing of her husband’s remains, giving exact coordinates to where they might be located* Ingredients: 1 pint of rainbow sherbet An egg
holy shit man, that Diana funeral brought back memories, I remember watching all excruciating 6 hours with my parents house on BBC1. Felt like every single person in Britain stopped to watch it, such a weird time
Oh bealeve me, it was the same here in the states. My parents were watching coverage about that for days. People everywhere were talking about it. I was like 14 when that happened, and I remeber thinking "who the hell is Princess Diana?!"
it's a very interesting case, that martha one. its almost as if she went down for her money guy: he only got like, 4k in fines even though he's the one that told her about the opportunity while she got a year (or two?), house arrest, and 400k in fines if i remember correctly.. came out to a show on prime daytime tv. her stonks may have gone down, but her value definitely went up
