I only ever heard about Thief: The Dark Project in passing from Yahtzee Croshaw in the early Zero Punctuation days, maybe one of these days I'll check it out.

Something that you don't mention in the video is that the thief fan community is still active to this day, and the game (as well as it's sequel) has an extremely versatile (if a bit temperamental) level editor. As of today, Thief 1, and thief 2, have probably around 1000 fan missions between them, including several full campaigns of varying lengths.

aaahhh thief.... way way ahead of its time. a genre definer. if we do not count some sloughfest parts of some levels, we have a perfect game here. and the general quality and use of sound effects... possibly still unmatched to this day.

Thief is great and all but I think its main issue is the higher difficulty levels which in addition to making the game more difficult (something I like) adds more objectives which feel like some sort of super hard to solve puzzles. So I'm forced to play in the normal difficulty. I disliked the labyrinth type missions like "down the bonehoard" mission and that's why I stopped after Assassins. It is indeed a great game and one which I truly believe deserves a remake like System shock did. Only Nightdive studios can do this game justice. The System shock remake might be one of the best if not the best remake of all time and the game itself is cool af. I sincerely believe if done right and with more QoL changes a Thief remake could be something both casuals (like me) and anyone interested in all aspects of Thief could continue playing the game. I prefer the "sneaking in houses" kind of gameplay and hate the super secret stuff like the silver poker in Assassins in Hard mode. I liked this game a lot but I believe it stands the test of time in most ways but fails in some critical spots. The AI isn't that great, some missions aren't that great, there are still a few bugs and stuff and overall it isn't perfect but I agree with the video title. Whatever the case, it is NOT to be overlooked. Everyone should at least give this a shot. I know my opinion is slightly controversial in that I don't like a lot about Thief but whatever I do like about it, I just absolutely LOVE.

The first two Thief games are incredible, not only for all the reasons mentioned in the video, but because they also allow for a very specific style of game play. I do not play as Garret, Master Thief, no sir. I play as the Midnight Taffer. Sneaking is for dummies. I rush in, gathering a trail of guards, then jump on a wall and watch them shout hopelessly. I whip out my bow and they all go running, then I jump down and chase them with my blackjack. I don't pickpocket, I bap guards right in the face and run. I steal everything in sight, throw everything that can be thrown, arrange unconscious guards in entertaining and compromising patterns. I line up bottles at the bottom of a staircase, then toss an unconscious guard down the stairs like I'm bowling. I once trapped about a dozen guards on the stage in the Opera House using crates. I get out of bounds with ease. I discovered that you can do ANYTHING to the Hammers in their cathedral as long as it's non-violent, including bounce crates off of them and even jump up and stand on top of them. There is pretty much limitless potential for shameless taffery, and I love it!

Food didn't restore any HP in Thief. Maybe someone patched it, but orgiginally not.

They don't make bears like the used to.

After Thief was released, several games like Deus Ex began to use stealth mechanics based on light and sound propagation. Absurdly influential game taht was way ahead of its time, puts the stealth sections of future games to shame.

I'd love to imagine Return to The Cathedral and The Lost City in a remake with good lighting.

Thus far I've only cleared the first level but this is a very persuasive video.
