Just wanted to say I really appreciate the individual video blocks you guys have been using to separate the different pieces of gear/presets/etc in your recent videos. I haven't seen that done before, and it makes it so much easier for viewers. Good show!
I have the Acoustasonic 40 and I used with a guitar with piezo pickup, an electroacoustic and a electric classical guitar... the results are great for less than 200$
I use the Fishman Loudbox Artist which is a bit bigger and pushes 120 watts. Brilliant bit of kit which I use with my Taylor acoustic (bought from Andertons). The only problem with Fishman Amps has been the poor quality of the Tolex covering. Many owners, including me, have reported that the top layer of the Tolex peels off. Fishman have acknowledged the problem and indeed offer a recovering service in the US but that's no use to us here in the UK. I hope they have addressed this on the current models. Having tried many other amps the Fishman would still be my first choice. It is like a mini PA. I use the DI out straight into the desk in my recording studio. Very good review of these amps.
Thanks Ben! Nice to have a review where you say which thing(s) you prefer and why. Must be tempting to say they are all really good, but potential consumers are looking for guidance. 15 mins on RU-vid is worth hours of browsing and trying in the shop.
Being dedicated to Peavey, most of life , was the reason to not buy a Marshall because of the cost, in 1973 at 15 years old Having learned that it wasn't a mistake In my later years, the Fender Accoustisonic 40 is a subtle blast , over the Loud box at 3/25 % Volume . It's a personal choice for any guitar player They all rock !
I've been using the Fishman Loudbox mini for many years now. I love how it sounds with my Accoustic as well at plugging in an electric guitar. Takes pedals really well.
I like the Marshall because it has an effects loop on the back . I can run effects like my Electro-Harmonix Canyon Delay & Looper in the "Shimmer" setting through the amp . No acoustic amps with built in effects seem to have a "Shimmer" type setting . I enjoy using that in some settings / songs
hi Jerry looking at a simpler set up my self if not the same .i have no amp or pedal at the moment but looking at reviews i do like Canyon like yours do you get a stereo effect with the Marshal or have i got it all wrong there is not many amps out here with loop input .just looking at the best set up i can get i did own AD50R a long time ago Thanks Derek
@@dezscott46 , Sorry I forgot to respond . I don't have the Marshall acoustic amp , yet . Hoping to get one this fall . I like the Marshall because it has an effects loop . I really don't like built in effects except for reverb . I would rather had a loop in the back and be able to add pedals like I do and can with my electric guitar set up . I current run my acoustic through my Orange electric guitar amp . I seen Philip McKnight do it and it worked for Him . I still want a acoustic amp to just keep both types of playing separate . Hope that makes sense .
Man... I appreciate the effort, and I realize how difficult it is to represent what the sound would be to your ears when standing in the room. In fact I came specifically because I'm aware of how passionate about acoustic tone many of your team are. The room itself is probably contributing, but mostly I think it's gotta be mic placement - not a one of those amps sounds good on the room mic.
I like the Blackstar 60 and the Fishman and they are the best overall of all of the amps and those two are at the top of my list. More pros than cons and loaded with features. I like the Fender as i used to own one of those and it is in the middle of my list. I currently own a Sonnet 60. Didnt like the Marshall or the Orange and those are the bottom two on my list.
Really good video. For me the Marshall & Blackstar came across sounding the best, with a nice even balance. The Orange sounded surprisingly good, despite its limitations. The other two seemed to have far too much treble. Thanks once again!
Wonderful video, thank you! Glad to see you again, Ben. I hope all is well with you and yours. I've been combing through the Andertons channel looking for everything Alvarez, it getting close to acoustic time!
One of the main reasons I bought 1 some years ago so my daughter could gig an acoustic set & I could noodle around with our electric guitars at home. Think it covers all bases pretty well. Great value & less than these acoustic amps.
No mic input on a Katana. Although it wasn’t demoed it is a feature on all amps reviewed ? Not that anyone would want to hear me sing. Or play guitar for that matter...
I have a Katana 100 with a acoustic mode, and a Fishman loudbox mini. And i can tell you, the Katana is absolutely thrash compared to the Fishman, or any amp intended for acoustic guitars. Yes you can use it and it is better than nothing, but Katana is an amp for electric guitars, period (for which it is absolutely great). Sorry for my grammar mistakes!
The Fishman might get a lot of positive comments and indeed it deserves it, it's a amazing sounding acoustic. But the looks of the Marshall is plain beautiful, looks nostalgic and retro love the look of the Marshall.
I think the "ears" are in the wrong place. They should be near the camera "facing" the amps, not behind them. This should be about how it sounds to an audience.
Funny the comments talking about how their multi tool purchase is just as good etc etc. Different products. You can't sing through the katana or the code for starters but the real point of these is you can play a small room but you can also get a mix and throw the mix to a PA or FOH. The real key for these amps is how good the mic side sounds.
I keep looking to replace my old Crate 60 watt two-channel. but it seems to have all the features I see on these other amps. It has the notch filter, reverb, chorus, aux input, etc. The only thing big difference is the Fishman has a tweeter.
I hate undersaddle pickups so much! Even just like a k&k mini would be so much more useful information to me! Impulse response pedals can also be helpful..
the blackstar is the one i like the best sound off ,i have the boss acoustic singer live and that amp just well i cant say enough about it ,it really is a amazing amp from boss
Your in room mics where not picking up any bass. Sounded like a tin can. The Loadbox Mini is incredibly bassy but clear, speaking from experience. DI outs are, well DI out and sounded pretty good.
He had the lows turned up high on the Loudbox Mini but I still only heard buzzy treble. Seems like he had his “ear” microphones BEHIND the amps so I can’t rely on that test. But I don’t know if I should disqualify the Loudbox based on this DI clip. The Fender DI sounded more balanced here.
I've got the Fishman and this is not going to be positive. Performance, perfect. My mobile PA system. The problem, from the very beginning the outside was dissolving! I live in the tropics and holy shit! The amp looks like it's 30 years old. It's only been out of the studio a dozen times. Looks like it's toured for years. I don't know. I still like it.
Thank you! I had the Marshall, like someone else said...sounds "processed." Also have the Fishman Loudbox Mini Charge....sounds good, but battery doesn't hold charge anymore. So now playing the Bose S1 Pro....much better, and found one preowned that was less in price.
The Fender and Fishman are good; I had an AS80 Marshall and it wasn't bad; the Marshall sound is a bit "processed," but acceptable. The Orange sounds like a total turkey.
I thought they all sounded best through the DI. The Fishman and Blackstar sounded best to me but I don't think any of them sounded great mic-ed up on this demo.
All sounded fair considering they are essentially cheap amps. Fender sounded surprisingly good,Marshall had big sound with bigger speakers but lacked clarity, orange sounded better than I thought it would and fishman was detailed but thin for my taste. All the Guitar techs and Music shops rate black star in UK and I now know why.For the price a nice sounding amp. I bought a Boss 60w Acoustic amp when they came out around this time.Sounded better than fishman and blackstar but lacked volume. Was gutted coz it looked amazing and was beautifully built. Now looking again prob will buy bigger Boss or Bigger Blackstar. End of the Day the best Amp is what yoy like the sound of!
I have the Marshall. The chorus is terrific but the overall sound is below the quality of my Laney A-Duo. It's heavy too. The Laney is also a fine amp for electro-harp. Its carry handle isn't great though. The Fishman and the Blackstar sound pretty good here. I'm not sure what the Fender and the Orange are really for, unless it's about saving a bit of money.
Great video. Your opinion is spot on in my mind. I’ve been using the Marshall for years and one of my buddies uses the Fishman Loudbox mini. Both great amps, but the Fishmans reverb is second to none.
I have the Marshall while my wife has the Fender coz we wanted a different sound when playing together. We are both happy with this two, we have our personal style and the amps have their own character but, in my opinion, the Marshall is way more better, it's a real amp, while the Fender is more like a toy. We tried the Orange and the Blackstar also and they are just toys. Now my wife is going to sell the Fender to buy a Fishmann after watching this video : )
Using an amplifier with acoustic guitars can open up a world of possibilities, allowing you to experiment with pedals, effects & of course our favourite... Acoustic looping! If you ever find the acoustic guitar to get a little boring, we would highly recommend giving it a go. 😉
thanks for the review while in lock down here in the UK ive been reading and watching lots of reviews as i am after an acoustic amp for home use only money does not come into it as long as it the amp im after and it comes down to two the aer compact 60 which looks a great amp but im also draw ti the yamaha thr5a which just ticks all the boxes not to mention the big price saving .So not sure what to do ,The last thing i hat to do is change it again in a 6 months time because i bought the wrong on .Any body out there could help me or has used them both also like the boss acoustic live only thing that put me off is i would like delay on it
THR5A is a great little amp specially if you're not using it to gig with. I've had one for many years and it's truly convenient to setup and takes up no room around the house. Amazing sound for such a small unit. However I don't own one but I have played the AER compact 60 . If I had deep pockets and money was no object that's the amp for me.
Any of them considered an open back ? I use a Pyle PVAMP60 with OD & Reverb on the clean setting. I also stay seemlessly unplugged as plugged-in with a wireless system with an Ovation Applause AE128.
Revisiting this video after 2 months, acoustic guitar amps aren't much to get really excited about. That said the Pyle I have on the clean channel is every bit as good as any of these for simply playing then and the open back is an ambient cab that fills the room. With the 60W and reverb the Pyle has in the middle of the room, using the wireless there isn't a room in the house I can't hear it in or play from. Just make sure the amp is set above furniture that absorb and block the sound. One trick I learned from the Skull Candy Air Raid BT speaker that I have for the smartphone, any amp could be placed flat on it's back and in the middle of the room and it radiates the sound much better than picking the end of a room to play the instrument. Wireless systems, can't say enough about them for the luxury of not being tethered to the amp, unplugged freedom with the volume that only an amp can provide. Perhaps a tone penalty, not enough to tolerate being on a short leash. I guess initially it was FOMO (fear of missing out) for not having an absurdly overpriced name brand acoustic guitar amp. A sub $ 100 Pyle PVAMP60 is really all you'll ever need. The Pyle's cabinet & Tolex are pretty much top quality, the faceplate of the amp is where it suffers for quality. That said, it's not something you really can't live with considering it's significantly more economical than just about any of these amps for initial cost. I modded the PVAMP60 to be able to be used as an open back cabinet. So I also run my electric guitar amp heads into the Pyle. All I did there was splice a 3' speaker cable into the existing speaker wires. The speaker cable has a 1/4 TS mono male connector so it goes into any amp head. So I don't even plug the Pyle into the wall socket for that use. And it still operates as the combo it was originally designed to be when I plug it into the wall. I basically use my VHT Redline Micro 6 pedal amp with VHT Redline V-4 pre-amp section pedal. The other amp head I use is a Pulse PM15H hybrid tube amp (1x12AX7/2x 6V6GT tubes, basically a rebranded Carslbro EVO 15H amp head).
Next time, it might be nice to place the microphones in front of the amps. Perhaps just below the camera. I think this would be closer to how an audience would hear it, or the player practicing at home.
🔵 thanks güdd review ❕i like the way you guys did it best ❕🐸 🔵 searching virtual for an acoustic amp at about the same price point and narrowed it down to #1 Marshall AS50D and #2 Loudbox mini w/bluetooth ps. Martin guitar has nice tones , mahogany in general are my favorite tonewood all hog guitars are super sweet ❕ 😉
Weirdly though there was a load of great acoustic amps, even nearly competition to AER, around about 3 or 4 years ago, none of these were on the list though... strange...
Thank you for making this video. Could you do another comparison using a guitar with a different kind of pickup setup--and under bridge plate (like the K&K Pure Mini), or a pickup(s)+internal mic combo, as is common for fingerstyle/percussive players?
These are all under £350 - that was the concept of the video & the AER amps are way more money (but are great!). We'll change the video title to make it clearer. Cheers

Good video for evaluating the guitar part of the package, but I would like to have heard how it handles vocals too. That’s the application I need an amp like this for. Without vocals, it’s only half a review.
Completely and totally unrelated to the video but I have odd shaped guitars and I have been trying to find a good guitar stand. Can you guys PLEASE do a guitar stand review, what's best for Flying V's and say BC Rich guitars etc etc. What's best for gigging and what's best for home/display use. Are multiple guitar stands like the hanging style ones that hold 2,3 or 4 guitars safe to use or are they just a way to drop 4 guitars at once.
great playing, but is it only me? that guitar sounds really bad on strumming on every amp don't know that one specifically but seems piezo only, Would be nice to hear blended one but i understand im asking too late and too much, Many thanks for the test!!
Refreshing to see an Andertons video that's not taken up with a tiresome wisecracking double act accompanied with a hefty portion of plain showing off of guitar skills. I can never make it through to the end of these kinds of "reviews". Mind you, there's many sycophants in the comments section who can!
Would have preferred reverb off with a singer. Reverb just muddies the final quality that I want to hear when checking an amp out. Make separate videos for the amps' reverb qualities.
Honestly all of them sound like garbage. Well technically is the piezzo but we need amps with microphone modeling as standard, Yamaha is on it since 2006 and some of his preamps and amps have it. If you hate that piezzo quack thomann sells a pickup with on board mic bend for 40€ that should work as an inexpensive fix.

I thought they all sounded pretty awful. I guess it’s down to the very piezo sounding pick-up in the guitar. Huge difference hearing the the mic’d sound which represents the proper acoustic guitar sound. Verdict; use a mic.
They "ALL" sound horrible, and no doubt an insult to the guitar and players natural sound. Most amplified acoustic setups are like sex with a condom. Not worth the effort and always disappointing.
If the guitar was in tune. He wouldn't have to move the guitar to keep it in tune. Stores do the shittyest work. Why I do my own setups. My shit is right. Ill bet anyone.
I dare say everything sounded the same. And tonally not any inspiring sounds. Everything was shill, thin and just not really great. If if is Piezo, needs a lot more shaping to get right . Ie drop the treble straight out.
