If you’re overwhelmed by all of the choices and wondering which sketchbook is best for visual journaling or art journaling, I'm going to share the questions to ask and what to consider when choosing a sketchbook.
Whether you're into art journaling, new to keeping a sketchbook, want to try keeping a visual journal, art notebook, or some combo of all of the above - I’ll show you what I consider the best options. I’m here to help you find the absolute perfect sketchbook for you.
How do you find the best sketchbook for beginners? What if you’re a starving artist? I’ll share the imperfect (but perfect for me sketchbooks) that I bought by the dozen when I was a teenager - and kept using into adulthood!
Maybe you have experienced this common dilemma of trying out a whole bunch of different blank books and just not being satisfied with what you're finding. Or maybe your sketchbook was so expensive and fancy - you’re afraid to make a mark in it! I can completely relate to that.
Mild spoiler alert: What's the best sketchbook for visual art journaling? The perfect sketchbook is the sketchbook that you find easy to fill. The one that you are able to work in without feeling like you have to have something important to say or create - to avoid “messing up” your blank pages. Spiral or Perfect Bound? What binding do you prefer for your visual journal or art journal?

I love the stitched Kraft covered Moleskine for sketching in size roughly 8 X 5, for pasting important things into and especially if I'm doing a lot of writing. There were packs of a dozen very similar notebooks on amazon that came in packages of 24 (oh yeah) but now they are unavailable. I'm hoping they become available again. For larger more artful journals I prefer a lay flat perfect bound book in about 8 X 10. I always get "rid" of the black cover and make it more interesting.

I hate spiral bound because I like bringing my sketchbook with me and it snags on everything and eventually gets ruined. It also just looks messy❤ I do, however, love softbound. Best of both worlds

Canson makes the 180 Sketchbook, which has a unique binding that looks like a stiched sketchbook but it can lay flat, so you can use both pages which doubles the paper size! The paper is really good quality, the color is a very slight Ivory, but still looks white. The tooth is perfect for dry mediums. The only downside, its the thickness, that is only 90gr. However, if you're not using watercolors or Alcohol markers, the Canson 180, is a great choice! It's the best sketchbook, for sketching pencils (Graphite, Chalk, Oil etc) For Pens the Sakura or the Moleskin are the way to go. Black Fountain pens, look great on the cream toned paper the Sakura Sketchbooks have! For Watercolors, the choices are more.

Perfect bound all the way, because I enjoy working across the spread. I've also found that ink and pencils smudge in spiral bound sketchbooks. It's unfortunate that the range of papers available in stitched books is a lot smaller, but after many years of trying out different brands, I've found a few I like a lot.

Hello! Thank you so much for the video. I am looking for a perfect bound, preferably A5 journal. I will be glueing lots of pictures and using both acrylics and watercolor. Is there a particular one you would recommend? Thank you so much!!
