I show and describe my second tube amp project, the resto/mod of an amp, the 8606-00 pulled from a Magnavox console, to make a DG-SE1, that is a single-ended tube amp as designed by Dave Gillespie and posted on audiokarma.org. Even though it barely produces more than one watt per channel, this is my favorite amp!
Featuring music by Seal, The Shins, and The Cars.

I can definitely hear the differences, even on small speakers. But I do have good (\Cambridge Audio) speakers on my computer. This amp sings in triode mode, with no feedback. With feedback, there is more bass extension, but at the cost of making the kids and highs more anemic with less spacial positioning and channel separation.

Interesting! That's not something I noticed, but it makes sense. The wires for the feedback have to cross the intervening circuitry and may pick up crosstalk.

what does the choke do?

The choke helps filter out the AC component in the power supply. Modern amps might have, say, a 10,000 uF cap on each rail, positive and negative, of the power supply. Capacitors that big and rated for, say, 400 V are prohibitively expensive, and if you did put various that big next to a tube rectifier, it would be destroyed. High voltage power supplies in tube amps typically have less than 100 uF. The choke helps make up for that fact.

The power tubes are in question you need to get access to a good test her they actually check their game and transconductance the year is a spec in their data book where they relate to how many hours a tube will last power tubes burn away the contact around the catheter heater and the star emitting electrons evenly this is how they lose power as they get older this is more prevalent at the very highest and the very lowest

I recently put it on the bench again. Changed some resistor values per the updated schematic and put a resistor in series with the front panel LED so it wouldn't burn out after ten minutes. Also put in my two best-matched power tubes, at least matched for current. But yes, I need a tube tester. I just gulp at the prices I see. I know, I need to get over it.
