I took a large, long, tall, clear storage bin and cut an opening in the end. It's uncovered. I add 3 inches of Cats Pride scoopable litter. The tall sides are great for "high" pee - ers.

I like this idea, I got a extra large mat to see if that helps reduce tracking but I still think the taller sides would reduce it. I’m using the crystal litter instead of clay, but it still has a dust. Definitely not smelly.

We live in rural Ireland and just use an old IKEA box in the bathroom with garden compost in it, then it goes on the flower beds or under the hedge. Everybody seems to be happy with this set up.

I used to live in a rural area and my cat didn't go to a box at all (he used a box only as a kitten), he went outside and did his business in a specific area of a hedge. We cleaned it regularly obviously. It's great to live in a rural area with a cat - that gives your pet the ultimate freedom of choice!

All of my cats prefer an open litter box. It can get messy with litter tracking out so I've gone with VERY deep litter boxes. I use a large tub generally used for storage of linens. Helps keep out the mess and they seem to like having a deeper disposal area - like a small sandbox. Always love the videos, thanks!

My favorite litterbox is a 58qt sterlite storage container. Cost under 7 bucks an is a better size for my large bobtail kitty. It requires using a heated utility knife to cut a doorway in, but has proven to be very sturdy afterwards. It does minimize scatter an the smooth plastic is like teflon repelling waste stuck inside.

I have a large siberian cat. I put a open xl litter box inside of a large covered storage bin. Cut a entrance in the bin, and have a litter mat inside also. I have those little motion battery powered lights stuck to the inside roof also. Best way I could give them privacy and keep her litter from going everywhere. I also use chewy frisco brand grass litter. Only kind I've found that doesn't stick like glue to her long hair and paws.

I use jumbo deep uncovered litter boxes from Petco. They run $23. I use "World's Best litter." It's light weight for my elderly hands. It's also eco friendly being made of corn. It does track more than Petco's clumping litter. I just use bigger litter mats to contain it. I have 2, 9 month old boys.

Must admit, I've always cleaned the litter box whenever it was used. I'm back living with my mum now that she's older and when my dad was alive, he only let us have outdoor cats (different generation). So, to help me keep on top of it, make sure my cat wasn't upset or have complaints from humans about the litter box being dirty or smelly (seeing as my mum doesn't mind her being inside), I just got in that habit. It's a decent sized open tray/box - however, as she's indoor/outdoor, (the cat, not my mum!) she really prefers to go in the garden. I've got a spotless litter tray I haven't had to touch in months! It's summer here in Australia, the last time I remember her using it was winter and we had a few days that were cold and rainy. Thankfully, she's never had a problem with it and it's there more for (decoration 😅) emergency, if she really needs to go and can't get outside. That's my "fascinating" litter box saga!😺

I have been a kitty mom for over 30 years. I found each pet different. My latest are two 4 year old brother/sister that were happy with the large stainle3ss steel uncovered boxes I have, but also liked the two small plastic uncovered boxes they came with. I do all 4. The think one of them was more fussy about with the litter. She preferred a fine grain litter to do her business in.

I use a clear plastic storage bin, its 32"L x 20"W x 13"H. I couldn't find anything big enough for my cat to comfortably move around in so I went with this. She was cramped and walking on eggshells in several other boxes I tried. Its also uncovered, easy to clean and was only about $15 at Walmart. I use Dr. Elsey's Ultra unscented litter. I put the entire 40lb bag in there and a little extra to prevent stuffs sticking to the bottom. I scoop 1-2 times a day and only have to re-litter the box once every few months. Other than that I just add litter to it when low, and use Fresh Step deodorizing spray bottle. My cat is a Tortie named Calypso, or Caly :)

I also use a 45 litre bin, but recently changed to a 32 litre as the sides are lower as my 15 year old boy has hip problems so the lower sides help him get in and out better. Yes.. litter needs to be deep so clumps don’t stick to the bottom and crumble.

I scoop it from two to three times a day, not only because I'm very sensitive to smell but also because one of my cats won't use the litter box if it's not up to her preference. I have 2 cats, an indoor/outdoor cat and a strictly indoor cat. My outdoor/indoor cat hated his covered litter box and would meow/howl until I let him outside to do his business. Now that the litter box is uncovered, he'll use the litter box when he needs to pee but still prefers to go outdoors when he needs to poo. My indoor cat has only experienced an uncovered litter box, which I'll move around sometimes. Personally, I think of their litter box of how I use the restroom. No one likes seeing an unflushed toilet, so I'll clean their litter box as soon as they're done using it. Which is 2-3 times a day since I imagine it must not feel so great to them to use their litter box when their earlier bowel movements are still there. I find that because I do this, my indoor tortie cat will meow and wait for me to clean her litter box before she uses it again, if I have been lazy in cleaning it right away. I'm with my cats all day so its easy for me to be pretty on top with cleaning their litter box, so I understand why that situation may be different for other cat owners since we're are all trying our best.

I started improvising with large tupperwares when I welcomed 3 feral kittens inside. The scatter was insane. Drove myself nuts trying to research the best litterbox options and bought 2 covered boxes on a desperate whim. One of the cats had trouble with the flap, so after she tore it off I left it off, but the open lid still does wonders to contain litter. I scoop each box 2+ times a day as needed. Who are these monsters that go 5 days without scooping?! Toxoplasmosis can develop in poop left for more than 24 hours so it's really not something to neglect if you ask me! Side note, everyone says you need a box plus one for every cat, but I get by fine with 2 boxes for 4 cats. 3 are relatives and they share one, it's just my first cat from another family that needs a box for herself.

I've had great luck with the Nature's Miracle covered box. These suckers are HUGE, large enough to hold an entire 20 pound jug of litter and tall enough to allow even the largest of my kitties to stand comfortably. The biggest selling point for me was the way the top snaps on to the bottom - the design minimizes any leakage to the exterior for a cat who has to pee against the inside of the thing. I have six of these boxes throughout the house for the four feline residents here and they seem quite satisfied with them.

My cat uses a covered letterbox; I got her as a 3-year-old being given away & she was already used to a covered automatic box. She has urinary problems (struvite) & had emergency surgery for the same only weeks after I got her. It's important for me to be able to monitor her elimination on a daily basis. I think it's equally important to assess what kind of litter a cat prefers. Mine prefers "natural" litter, & we have become fans of Worlds Best. However, this report has opened my eyes to additional possibilities, & I will replace one of her covered ones to see if she is more comfortable with the open arrangement. Thanks for more good info!

I’ve had cats for 40+ years. Our cat population runs between 2-4 cats at any time. Almost every cat loves to sling litter, some with great enthusiasm. The low sides of store-bought cat boxes pose no obstacle to my fur ejectors, so…. After 20 years of cleanup on isle 9, I moved to using clear storage bins (29Lx19Wx13H). You throw away the lid, cut a U-shaped access hole (bottom of the U 1” above the litter hi mark) in one of the sides and everyone is happy. They’re cheap, the slinging is contained by the high walls and everyone has room to maneuver. Win-Win-Win.

As far as litter box odor the main cause of that is giving cats cheap food with too many indigestible fillers! If you feed cats good food with fewer fill they will digest it more completely. The will result in them producing less and leaving less material in the litter box resulting in far less odor.

I always found that oversized metal boxes were great because I could keep them clean easy and the cats didn't accidentally poop/pee over the edge. Also I've had some cats who grew to rather long sizes, and they liked nice long boxes. I've also lived in places where I could dedicate a small room, and I used small sandboxes. Cats seemed to love the size. I still used cat litter, but I needed to change it less often.

My boy loves to throw sand around and he's on the larger side as he's Siberian. I ended up with foot tall boxes from Target for $12. One third the price of the pet store and the tall sides keep the litter in AND its clear so cat can see (the non-existent) danger. Fortunately all of our cats are young so getting in and out isn't a problem. Im using the grass seed litter as its low dust, but it does track a bit because it's light. I noticed the clay should stick to my glasses and was hard to get off, probably not so good for cats sinus and lungs. We have even more boxes than recommended and I know the favorite two and I clean those twice a day and everything once a day. They help me by going in a box! I'll help them and keep it clean.

I have a cat who does not seem to like closed in spaces -- like boxes or paper bags -- the way most cat do. So her litter box is open. She's an enthusiastic "cover upper" so the litter box really takes a beating. I buy a new one about every year or so, trying different brands and styles. She has excellent litter box habits -- in the 3 years I've had her, she's never missed once. She doesn't seem to mind one style or the other, as long as it's open. I recently changed litter, though, and didn't think to do a gradual transition. She looked into the box like "ok, what is this?" but didn't refuse, it was more like a curiosity thing, and she just went ahead and did her thing. I do try to scoop every time she uses the box, but I scoop at least a couple of times a day. I'm currently looking again for a new box, and want to get something a bit bigger. She's not a big cat, but I've noticed she seems cramped in the box sometimes, especially when she wants to turn around in there. I don't think she would like the automatic boxes, and frankly, I don't either. "Old school" is good enough for us!!

I've been responsible for a cat or cats for 30+ years. My 10 month old teen cat likes to play in and fling litter everywhere so I use a jumbo high-sided box from Target. I discovered Fresh Step a few years ago. It's a desiccant which dries the poop out quickly, therefore eliminating any lingering odors. Yes, it's pricey, but worth it for me. Next to the jumbo box is a pine pellet sifting box which he used only once.

I'm glad they talked about other factors especially size. Nearly all of the commercially available covered litter boxes I have seen in the stores are too short! An average adult cat can't stand up in them comfortably! Your cats need to be able to stand fully and hold their head up in a normal position. If even so much as their ears hits the top of the box it will be uncomfortable for them to use. Even if they can stand up many cats will not like it if they can not hold their tail up in the box because of course they do not want to anything in their tail fur.

Thank you! Excellent video! Especially liked the informative videos. My two cats use a large open litter box. I'm currently using Dr. Elsey's, not the Cat Attract one, but the one in the blue and white bag for multiple cats. I've used for many years. I'm now considering changing over to pine pellets from Tractor's Supply. I researched a lot and kept getting so many ads for cat litter in my FB feed! I looked into all of them. 😅 The pine pellets are a lot less expensive. But I will be getting a new litter box made for pellets. As long as it's similar, open and larger. Both of my cats either use the litter box or go outside (indoor/outdoor cats). Inside, they never do any of their business outside of the litter box. But I'll probably put both out for them to use for transitioning. Haven't implemented yet. Been busy researching and changing their cat food to healthier choices. (Their old brand went out of business. It was very good. But now learning about even better choices.) I've been transitioning them to raw and also gently cooked. Also their main wet food that I mix those into changed, too, since former brand not longer available. I also got rid of all kibble and use very small snacks of unhydrated freeze dried now. All these changes and they're doing great with all of them!!! ❤😻😻 They like variety for their food. The new foods are enough. I don't want to make another change that isn't necessary right now. The Dr. Elsey's is fine.

I'll weigh in here. I use Petco's largest covered litter box and removed the front flap and keep the top flap raised. That way if in a small space, can place items on top of the box. I noticed some of the images in vid had very little litter in the box. I use Petco's Phresh litter and bought several 30lb tubs that I refill at their disco price. That way I'm not filling landfills with containers. One 30lb container fills the box 3/4 full and lasts a couple weeks at least, depending on how many cats around and if they can be outside. It works great capturing odor and clumping. I clean the box at least once a day! Very important. Put yourself in your cats' position. It's a no brainer. My cats use the box when totally enclosed too, which if in a larger more public space I would keep enclosed, as less unsightly and more privacy for the cats. They are fine with it either way and I have had 4 cats sharing a box. Definitely cleaned more times/day with more cats. My least fave chore in the whole world is cleaning a litter box and I keep the box next to an openable window for ventilation.

Will always choose uncovered if possible. My trouble was finding a good size box. Our 11.5lb lad just looks so uncomfortable in a 'medium' size cat box. I eventually went out and got XL ones not long after we got him. . .they are HUGE for our smaller cat. . .but he likes to dig/throw litter so that +high sides seems to be okay for them. I would also say if smell is an issue consider a diet change! Higher Quality diets tend to have less 'waste' going through their system therefore less smell that dissipates faster.

With 4 kitties, I have made large boxes using storage bins. I have tried 2 uncovered and 2 without recently (kitty number 4 is my friend's and she stays with me while he is out of town working). All 4 seem to prefer using the ones with the lids on. My oldest kitty is big, very tall and long and mobility issues. He tends to squirt over the side of most commercially available boxes and at times, cannot get his legs over the threshold. I had to cut his entrance way down to 1 1/2" so he can easily get inside. (13 x 13 1/2 x 24). All boxes are side by side (4) plus 2 extra in an underground room. A totall of 6 in our home. I scoop all the boxes at least twice a day and after I see they have dropped their little "nuggets" 😮😂 I use dr Elsey's litter. I cannot use the stainless steel boxes that I preferred due to my elderly kitty needing a modified box. Thank you for your info always!😊

It also depends on how deep your litter is and the type of litter. My cat has a closed litter box and I changed her litter to something softer now she's a super senior. But now she only does wee in there and does poop outside in the garden. I'm not sure what that's about.

I've tried various litter boxes, including big storage bins, and various kinds of litter. I found really big litter boxes with high sides, a low entry, and a really tall lid at Petland in Canada. They're about 3' tall when put together. I leave one uncovered and 2 covered, and there doesn't seem to be a preference. I ended up with wood pellet litter. It's not their favourite but all the kinds of litter made of small particles made one of my cats sneeze excessively. Pellet litters are the only ones that don't bother her, and they both like the wood ones best out of the pellets.

Can we get a video on the best litter for the litter robot 4 please?🙏Arm and Hammer Clump and Slide has been the best so far, so it'll likely be my go-to, but I'm open to trying others as well. I've tried Tidy Cats Lightweight which was leaving areas of the Robot with "wet" clumps. Scoop Away and Fresh Step also gave me this issue, but were worse. I played around with the timer options and neither really seemed to improve this issue. Thank you!

Regardless, litter boxes are never large enough for my cats..covered or uncovered.

Ya, my Nehemiah sometimes goes Zen in the box and gets litter all over the room. Not sure what causes this behavior. I clean them every day.

I really like the open litter boxes from arm and hammer. They are tall enough they can’t kick litter of have accidents outside the box like a closed litter box but it’s still open. And they’re not very expensive. For the feral barn cats we have at our farm we use plastic bins with holes cut out of them and they are good if you want to DIY something

My one uses a covered one, but I had to remove the flap, otherwise he would not use it. He will go in, pee at the front, and poop at the back.

My cats use covered boxes. For 2 reasons. I have 2 cats that will stand half in and half out, and pee half in the box if it's not covered. The other reason is to keep the dogs out and away from them. I do scoop all of the boxes 3xs a day..I have 4 cats right now and 5 litter boxes.

Does that space capsule litterbox you showed in your thumbnail actually launch the turds into space? This would save me cleaning time.

Do you find that the white igloo looking covered box is leak proof and reduces litter scatter? What brand of box is it? Is the iprimio mat machine washable after shaking out the litter?

Do you recommend using a cat litter pan liner? I use them but sometimes the cat cuts wholes in the liner and it's hard to scoop out the litter. I've always used one for easy clean up. What's your advice?

its incredible to see a cat did that. for me its probably just cat's instict and we didn't even teach the cat anything we just play and nap with it. the only thing we actually noticed, it was always snooping in that specific loo near the main door. it was a very playful tux cat🐈‍⬛

Is there a cat litter to help with odor when cats don’t cover their poo 💩? 🙃 my kitty has never covered anything since she was a baby and I’ve used crystal litter to help. But would like to use something that won’t damage her lungs.

Hi Mallory I had a type of litter box that you roll and the poop went into the tray and you just dumped the tray but I didn’t notice that the cats did not have a lot of space to move around so I switched to a larger open box litter, and they seem to like that more.

The experts said litter boxes on the market are too small. What size to cats like then? For a uncovered litter box.
@lisabates7390

Where do those stainless litter boxes come from..the plastic ones get smelly and you can't clean the small out. That's why I use a litter pan liner. It all makes for better clean up because if it's ti.e to change litter, you just pulled up the bag and throw away. That's if ypur cat hadn't dug a bunch of holes in it.

My three cats use Pine litter, so it's only really viable to use a sifting litter box from Petmate Arm and Hammer that doesn't have any covering. The costs are now extremely low and I only have to buy 1 bag of pine litter per month. I used to spend over twice as much on clay litter, so we're unlikely to ever go back since they all seem happy with it

I know this is unrelated but can you do a special on keeping your cat in the house or letting them go out? I have a cat that constantly tries to go out and I don’t want him to go out because of the other animals in the area that would mess with my cat that’s outside.

We have the Van Ness Jumbo Sifting box and my cat loves it. I have seen a litter box called the Capsule litter box with UV-C sterilizing light. Do you know anything about it or have you reviewed it. It's supposed to cut down on odour. I have also seen something called Honey Pro UV-C automatic sterilising light. I was wondering if you knew anything about that? It's made by the company LIM (Living In Motion) I was wondering if it would be safe to attach to the inside of the litter box.
