Why did schools such as Brown resolve peacefully and mutually? The Administrations talked to the students, listened to the students, and came to a mutual understanding of the next steps to take. The encampments cane down and the students returned to their other business, and NO cops were needed.

This is a disappointing, but not entirely unexpected take on the issue from David. David cites University rules, and makes an appeal to people's logic that semi or permanent encampments are against University rules, so why are they surprised when they're taken down. Protesters are going to protest, any thing the state does to limit people's ability to protest in a non-violent manner is the state flexing their muscles to silence descent. One only has to look back on our own country's history the Civil Rights Movement Rights Movement to see the kind of tactics which were employed against the activists during that era. The cops/the state don't just Crackdown on descending protesters by saying we're evil racist, duh. Protesting protected by the constitution, so the cops can't arrest you just for 'protesting.' For example during the Birmingham protests, activists as a tactic with specifically margin groups of less than 50 people to circumvent the police excuse of arresting people for blocking traffic traffic. Guess what the cops did anyway? Yup, they arrested protesters for blocking traffic even though they legally they were not. And the list goes on and on and on. Come on, there are consequences to breaking the rules, just smacks of tepid support oven authoritarian crackdown. And bringing up The Narrative of oh look how strange they are, they took over a building and then asked for food and water is just another way to frame the narrative that the protesters idtioc. This people are protesting a nearly wholesale Slaughter of civilians. Gimme a break. I do believe that David would admit his biases, he certainly doesn't support the pro-Palatine protest because as he's admitted he believes that Israel has a right to exist. Which I might point out the pro Palestinian protest movement as a whole isn't opposed to that. It is quite telling that David almost never covers the current crisis going on in the Gaza Strip and the various atrocities the IDF has committed against civilian populations. If the ICJ does rule that Israel is indeed committing a genocide against the Palestinian people, I wonder what his reaction will be?

Every one should have the right to protest on their campus. For security, health and safety, schools should not allow semi permanent installations for this purpose. Other students and faculty should not be threatened or prevented from going to their classes, etc.

I have mixed feelings about this myself. I don't want to both sides this either. On the one hand, the protesters have every right protest without fear of being brutalized from cops and fear of being shut down. On the other hand, college campuses have rules, when your rights go outside of boundaries of the rules then that's where things become irrelevant.

The correct way to respond to protest depends on what they're protesting. If they are protesting something that our government approves of, then we will allow them to walk through the streets, we will allow them to set up encampments anywhere. But if you're protest implies that something white in this nation is wrong, be at the government, the police, the laws, even the faith of the nation, well..... then it's an illegal gathering. Then we have to break it up. Because in America the only way to know who your Lords and Masters are is to find out who you are not allowed to criticize, is that not right president netanyahu?

One obvious objection here would be that we can all imagine a situation where breaking the rules would be justified. The protesters believe that protesting at a university in a manner that violates the university's rules might help to prevent or end a genocide. I don't think most of us would try to argue that upholding the university's rule against building encampments on campus is more important than preventing a genocide, but it's also not really feasible to let people ignore rules or break the law any time someone with a cause might plausibly end up on the right side of history. So how do we adjudicate that?

They have every right to protest but at the same time, the uni has every right to suspend/expel them if they break the rules. Consequences are a part of civil disobedience. Don’t expect otherwise. Don’t want to get expelled or arrested? I guess your cause isn’t that important to you.

The question is wrong, it is not daycare and they are exposing themselves very highly. The good way to react is to get a fair debate to explain the situation or in case democracy is not anymore allowed for this topic what are the geopolitical implication and debate about that.

Encampments happen every fall during football season

I don't know why Lewis/Louis is so supportive of cops being called to disperse these protests. They are overwhelmingly peaceful and non-obstructive. The occupation of Hamilton Hall was merely the icing on the cake. Before that, students were literally camping on Columbia's south lawn. It was the mere fact that a powerful and sustained protest being organized that set off Columbia's leadership, not whether they were somehow detrimental to the university's operation. I wonder if Lewis/Louis would be this supportive of the police crackdowns on the anti-Vietnam protests of the late 1960s or the protests against apartheid South Africa. These protesters aren't there to vent about a lost baseball game. They have very legitimate concerns about an issue of upmost importance, and they feel like the university has been ignoring their calls for decades.

I am okay with protesting, but not shutting down an uninvolved students education. They should be able to finish their classes, graduate, whatever.

I appreciate your coverage of politics and current events 90% of the time and I’m especially interested in hearing your opinions on issues involving economics. You demonstrate a wealth of knowledge and pragmatism that’s often missing on the left. However, on this issue of Israel and Palestine I’ve sat by and watched with disappointment. The IDF is incessantly committing war crimes and escalating regional wars with neighboring Arab states with little to no coverage from you. I understand that you have your priorities for this channel. I ultimately think that you have a different theory of change than a majority of the left, particularly those concerned with anti-colonialism organizing. A historically literate understanding of anti-colonial movements involves a recognition that oppressed people do not achieve liberation from abiding by the rules, dictated by institutions. Yes, staying within the parameters of the rules dictated by universities would probably foster more order, and yet it would also make the protests a lot easier to ignore. It is only through agitation and resistance that liberation becomes a reality. When MLK spoke about liberal allies more concerned with order than justice, he was talking about people like you. I’m going to continue watching this channel because I think you still do a lot of important work. I hope this message finds you though.

This was a pimple that finally popped. I understood that the way it was happening was not going to workout long term when I was learning about it in church. The college could of just stopped sending their tuition to a country at war.

If you commit acts of civil disobedience you should expect consequences. Civil Rights activists in the 60’s knew this and planned for it.

What David and this caller fail to understand is that civil disobedience is what can ultimately foment some kind of positive change, or at the very least bring more attention to a political issue that is otherwise being ignored or downplayed. Marching in the streets of Selma while blocking traffic, sitting at the front of the bus in the "wrong" section, going to a "white only" diner, anti-Vietnam sit-ins on campus. These types of protests and the media coverage that follows them is what gets the attention and gets people talking about the related issues. These students are doing the right thing to bring more attention to the active genocide and apartheid and the universities that are supporting Israel with their funding.

Kept it peaceful, state your case, objections and your issues, do not destroy property, keep it safe and respectful to the location, do not harass passersby’s even if they have a different opinion, do not blame all Jews, keep in mind it is not all the Jewish people or religion that caused this horrific crisis, it is Netanyahu and his government supporters that are waging this war against the Palestinian people! And yes our government that is supporting Israel’s war with weapons and financial aid but has been pushing and providing humanitarian aid, agreed we the US need to do more to stand up against this genocidal campaign! I watched a full 4 hour stream of the protest. They WERE peaceful. Those aweful cops came in and were horrible. The kids were even screaming why are you doing this we aren't hurting you. They were spamming rubber bullets at them and being really rough. They also left the place trashed. The cops were literally smiling while being violent as all hell

The only good way is to limit campus protests to students only. Do ID checks. Anyone who wants to have a larger protest should organize a protest with a city or government entity so it is done properly.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the point of a public demonstration to be seen so your message gets out? Wouldn't obstruction end up being counterproductive in that goal? I suppose there's an argument to be made that causing irritation might convince some to acquiesce to alleviate the irritation, which might work for domestic or local issues, but is less than useless when it comes to foreign policies. If anything, people are becoming antagonistic to the protests due to negative coverage. If you can make yourself look like the victim instead of an agitator, that'd go much further in your goals.

I would like to see the cities, in which these protests happen set aside public areas for these protests. Areas that are safe but still visible.

Hear them but ask questions. Of the answers to the questions make you unsure, trust your intuition. This is sound logic. Don't make things fit your outlook let the facts lead you to the conclusion regardless of bias.

People have a right to protest but the right doesn't trump the right of the University as a private institution to set rules and enforce them. If we follow the logic some are suggesting then all protest, in all manner should be allowed wherever.

Provocation and overreaction is also what is happening in Gaza itself.

When most people say from the river to the sea, they mean Palestinians will be free from the river to the sea. It doesn’t necessarily mean that Israel isn’t allowed to exist

It happens longer on other college campuses because of a combination of indifference, support for the cause, and fear of hurting the students feelings among both school administration and local government.

It's not about Israel existing, it's about Israel existing as a _Jewish state._ That should stop, Israel should rather exist as a secular democracy with equal rights for all inhabitants instead of the religious equivalent of an ethnostate with religioua equivalent of apartheid.

My take is that the school should take these protesters to court. This is why our court system exist.
