Sir ! What is the cost to grade, level ground ? Just $ 1500 ? For each acre of land ? Can you advice me an affordable company, who can level my lot on Big Island ?
you raise a lot of good points. I have been looking at the 3 acre uncleared lots in FFVE for the last 10 years. They were going for $14k then and are up to $27k now.. What are your thoughts? IS this worth the investment? My main goal is to get away from california, be off grid and raise chickens, rabbits, a couple goats, garden, and give back to the community. I am getting older, have back pain issues, and I am less set on the 'bigger is better' when it comes to selecting land.. I watched your video on 5 communities in puna.. I would like to hear your perspective of FFVE and other surrounding areas.. Things are getting bad in california.
@@heathersmith6305 its not easy making the move. Yhe first couple years will definitely make you question your choices. That said, if land's going to get cheaper it might get back down to $20k. We have tons of booms and busts on big island. This looks like another. Fern forest is rainy, colder, had no soil and can have some bad neighbors. But some streets are great. You will just have to bring in a lot of material to make it farmable.
Your closing lines sum it up for me. Living free. Done with the rat race here. The kid is off in the Navy now and it is just me and the dog. I was leaning to going back to Texas, but the big island is looking pretty nice from what I have been seeing. Yeah, I know it is a bit more country than the rest of Hawaii, but I prefer that. Just subscribed. Keep up this good work!
Mahalo! The recent Hawaii shutdown puts this lifestyle higher on the list of importance. It's time to for the people of Hawai'i to go back to the roots.
WE are planning on building an off grid community in Hawaii with tiny houses and after watching your story we think this might be doable. Very insprirational. Wow. Thankyou for sharing.
Aloha from Maui. I was born raised Oahu, but lived or visited all the other Islands in our State. I've been stuck on Maui since 2015, came over to do construction on the Dirty Monkey that was in Lahaina... My wife has lived Maui since 1980s. and has inherited property out in Nahiku next to George Harrison Estate... it was nice 6 yrs ago, now it's 19 acres of jungle nightmare... we also live up Haiku on 3 more acres of jungle but not so bad...
It’s sad that God gave us free rain, sun, land and food. Now man wants money for air, and everything else they can think up. We need to go back to skills and bartering

Awesome video very informative my father built a container home in kapaau hi years ago I can’t wait to finally go there and possibly stay because it’s my dream as well and thank you so much for sharing your experience and proving the fact that dreams can come true.
Aloha! I'm tryina be your neighbor. I love your story because it sounds like what I'm preparing to do myself. Just get a small piece of land and then gradually build. Coming from the mainland, and not having friends or family who can identify with my vision and my dreams to be more self sufficient in Hawaii it's really helpful to hear success stories such as yours. I'm so happy for you that 18 years in it's all working out so well. Mahalo for all the info and advice.
It definitely was a struggle at first. I was pretty lonely and felt so isolated in the middle of the ocean. But I loved surfing and began building up a network through people I met at the beach. It is an attainable dream, I hope you reach yours.
@@jonathankuhn2180 You could say that! I have been living in town for the past 2+ years and I have a good job. I haven't been able to get a piece of land yet, but just remaining here on the island for this long has been an accomplishment in and of itself, and even without my own homestead I feel lucky for every day that I get to be here!
@@Malini108 Cool, glad to hear! I live in colorado and feel the same way! We might have to be friends, I am feeling the island life coming my way soon. Where are you living or renting? What is the cost for a small room? Are there any places near by where I could be employeed in massage or yoga? What about working on a fruit or nut farm? How is the seafood? Is it affordable, is the fishing good? Thanks!
I remember my friend that lives there talking alot about the cinder infill to level spots and growing in containers, your video is inspirering , I just realized you have to compost and make your own dirt!
If you have a fence, pigs are no problem, plus they taste good. It's been a long time since I surfed California, the waves have gotten PACKED with transplants post covid here in Hawaii, how's the surf on the mainland?
Hi Homesteadin’ I am glad you got to live your dreams. That’s a big tank. I love the pineapple growing. Enjoy it, my friend. New subscriber. Merry Christmas.
Aloha Karen, Whenever I start to feel like I wish I had more or I get jealous of what someone else has, I just remember how lucky I am to have what I have. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for saying so. I don't know Oahu too well, but if you are in the rural parts of east oahu you should be fine, otherwise expect some hurdles to jump through.
your channel is exactly what we were looking for. My partner and I have got the cheap living over here on the mainland down. we're ready and gearing up for the move to Hawaii to put what we've learned over the past 5 years into action. Homestead Hawaii here we come. Thanks brother Aloha
Wow I haven’t even watched the whole thing but I’m already inspired i turn 23 years old this year and I want to move to Hawaii grow my own food and learn to surf so to hear that you did it at my same age confirmed for me that it is possible for someone even as young as me🥰❣️ I am excited to watch the rest of the video and hear what you have to say 🙌🏾
While I know anyone can do it, it’s not as easy today as it was 20 years ago. The same $3k lot is now $30k and building prices cost a lot more but it can be done if you’re resourceful and driven. BUT if I was doing it all over again now… I might go to another country that’s cheap and learn how to develop remote based income
Loving the dream!! Mahalo for sharing...I just was lead to your channel. I would love to do this...have done it before and it was like Heaven. Living on Maui last 31 years. Looking forward to watching your videos. Much aloha and God Bless You and your ohana! 🌈🌺🤗💛🙏🕊
I share some of it in this video here 10 Year Old Tropical Food Forest Tour On A Half Acre In Hawai'i (With Tips To Make Yours Thrive) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jdzb62RXp9A.html
3k - great investment! I am looking and it looks like 45k and up. I want to raise my daughters there. We lived there in 2015. It’s amazing. Looks like you have it set up.
I have watched a ton of off grid videos and had become discouraged. But after watching 2 of your videos I feel encouraged. 1 Acre of land is all I need. Are property taxes high in Hawaii? Access to groceries until/instead of a garden? Medical facilities? Roads are like what?
Moving to KEAAU on Sept 15th. Purchased a tiny house. Completely off grid. Solar ect. I luckily didn't have to buy land just put it on my daughter's land.
Awesome video brother..looking into taking a vacation this year to look at some property’s in the Ocean view,Mountain view and Pahoa area super excited I found your channel..time for some binge watching this weekend thank you for the great content 😎
@@HomesteadinHawaii Thank you..it’s inspiring me and with your local knowledge I’m definitely learning a lot and looking into things that I probably wouldn’t have..so definitely not a wast of time. In the beginning I will probably do a small Yurt or small cabin at or under 220 sq ft to help with permits. I will also only be staying part of the year for the first few years..I’m thinking of finding a caretaker for the property or someone local to rent it cheep to help detour the theft issue..what do you think would be a good way to go in that type of situation. Thanks again for all that you do ! 😎
Hey Sean, that's great bro. Awesome video. We're moving over this spring. Where we live foundations are common. I've got a lot to learn about post and pier foundations. If you have any resources or pictures of how you did your cottage foundation, that would be awesome!

@@youthestar Looks like you got the warm Hawaiian greeting that some people get when moving to the Big Island. I donʻt mind rain, I love staying at home and have tons of projects to keep me busy. And you really have to know the area youʻre thinking of living in, itʻs not all the same, that's for sure. Thanks for sharing your manaʻo
You must watch more of my videos :). I have a compost toilet and my greywater goes out into the landscape. You can get away with it legally here, you have to prove you can't access traditional sewer treatment and have a permitted toilet.
Video idea. It would be nice if you would show us around your property so we could see all the food bearing plants you have planted and how quickly the plants have grown. Are you fully self sufficient with food production etc?
Ahaha I moving to island from city lady from Brazil to Hawaii homestead , thanks for your videos it’s great help for someone like me.. we will be neighbours I love to meet you. Good vibes 😎
OK got it, I'm just really attached to this Island, my Mom was from here and I have relations here so sorry to step on your parade and keep up the good work you are doing.
great video! i would love to chat with you sometime, as my wife and I are looking to build our homestead. Hope you score some good waves, and your place looks great btw:)
Brother, I love this video. I like how you laid it out, I like how you worked for it. I like how you are optimistic and say to make the dream happen! Any suggestion as to where I could look for land? Like a website, or do you know of some for sale? Is that area safe from the lava? What is the better direction (N,S,E,W) to be located? Also you think they will still turn a blind eye in 2022? Any other places in HI that are chiller like this? If a neighbor calls on you what might happen? Any info on that would be appreciated, thanks!
The dream is still alive. It just costs more. All those questions you asked would require a consult but my best advice, check out puna in person to see if you like it. It is not for everyone
@@HomesteadinHawaii Cool, I have a future trip to the area planned. I have a friend that has was living on the other side of the island and has been out that way. I would consider a consult sometime. Thanks for the reply. I work in Alaska on a farm in the summer. I also wonder if a vehicle would be safe unattended while I am away.
@@marymalko5105 The Jungle I can deal with and understand. But rippers? Guessing that is a term for thieves? That's sad. Not very attractive to live somewhere that is getting eyeballed by thieves.
Might buy 6 acres with my brother in volcano. Fern forest. Two adjacent 3 acre spaghetti lots. $69k. Good place to homestead? It seems to be thick rainforest. Mostly flat tho. Or flat ish.
A lot of people are moving into that area. It's cooler, wet, and can grow some cooler season crops, but not much traditional tropical crops. Mostly flat with ohia tree forest.
Homesteadin' Hawai'i how stressful is homestead life currently for you in hawaii 1-10, im at a daily 9 here near seattle, it might be all that coffee and kids screaming daily
amen to that, brother: living free, abiding in truth and love the most important thing... most people trade for slavery. thanks for your comments re a smaller block: was beginning to think the lack of soil would prohibit a homestead AT ALL, but raised beds the answer -plus your infilling of the uneven pockets a great idea... can u use a digger to create a water-retention large/deep pond? or is the ground too porous to hold the water? and too sharp to not puncture any plastic lining? Big island: is the north eastern side volcano-safe? cheers buddy, cc
