What's the deal with Soft Hackle Feathers?? Here's our take.

Great tutorial guys, thanks for showing all the different options. Have either of you tried the covert feathers from a Mallard Duck wing? Lots of wispy hackles for smaller patterns.

Great video guys, thanks! One quick sound tech nerd suggestion - have you looked into applying a high pass filter to your audio? Whenever you move around the lavalier mics gets brushed, causing a loud popping sound. Perhaps not a big deal on laptop or phone, but very noticeable through speakers when watching on my TV. Good news though, this can be mitigated if not completely eradicated by removing any sound below a specified frequency in your audio. You could also spot-adjust it only where the pops occur. For what it's worth, you might consider going to a stationary microphone to avoid contact with it altogether. A figure-8 or omnidirectional polar pattern mic should pick up both of you well. There are plenty of quality affordable broadcast/podcast mics on the market these days. Big fan of the channel! If I can help you guys with any audio questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Awesome video! couple comments/questions: 1) I wish the audio in your podcast was this good :) 2) how do you guys prefer to size soft hackle feathers? same method as dries or longer/shorter? I see lots of flies with very long soft hackle feathers. 3) given your guys' passion and experience, a couple more videos like this on materials would be much appreciated. I'd love to see videos on hooks and thread. So many choices now...how do we pick?

Superb video about different types of hen capes and saddles. Well done gents.

Talking about soft hackles and dubbing loops - that fluffy "marabou" at the bottom of the feather stem (that is always stripped off and trashed) when twisted up in a dubbing loop makes an awesome "chenille" body - great stuff for burrowing nymph patterns; panfish flies and carp flies.

As someone who exclusively ties and fishes soft hackle flies (especially in smaller sizes) I've only found starling so far for size 16-20 soft hackles. Are there options on the hen necks for tying those smaller flies or should I stick with starling?

I heard that there's a great soft hackle article coming out in Fly Tyer in the Spring, but that's just what I hear. I think the guy who wrote it bought all of the saddles from FFF.
