Talking delivery of my Sienna tomorrow. Originally getting an Odyssey, but learning the shocking difference in reliability and rear legroom, not to mention comfort, my decision was made for me!
Most of these numbers are a wash. What's more interesting, at least for me, is info about which one has Carplay, which one has a removable centre console for long loads? How easy / expensive is the trailer hitch and wiring? AWD is a gimmick for most people. What about heated seats? Which one comes with roof rails? These are all things that have a major effect on the day to day use of the vehicle.
The Sienna wins for me. I have both and what I can tell is the Toyota holds up better than the Honda in relibility. The Odyssey I had was a 2013, but the Vtec seals starting leaking on them and one central motor mount busted on it. I traded for a 2015 Sienna xle and the Sienna is so much smoother and much more soild built than the Honda the Honda was new when I bought it, and my Sienna is certified used with 55k miles on it. Toyota is just simply more reliable. I babied the Honda and in those problems, it happend at around 40 to 45k miles. My Toyota now has 84k on it and it's like a brand new van. Just starts up with no problems and runs and runs so smooth. I can't get over how smooth that van is over the Honda ! It probably beats by brothers Caddy Escalade ! That's how smooth it is !!
Tough call if you are picking amongst these 2 vehicles. I’ve driven a 2015 Odyssey 23k miles and 2011-2014 Sienna rentals just as much mostly highway miles doing 65 - 80 on i95. The Sienna has a smoother ride but does not handle as well as the Odyssey. The Sienna has a bit more body roll than the Odyssey. My wife liked the Sienna because the interior has a more luxurious look and sits higher. Toyota has a better rep when it comes to reliability. What it came down to for us was price. If dealer price were the same, we likely would have gone with the Sienna but we were able to get the Odyssey EXL for over 3K less out the door price vs the comparable Sienna XLE. So far so good with 3.5 years and 23k miles. Odyssey is decent in the snow with stock Continental TrueContact tires so would not consider Sienna AWD in NYC area.
Dave one suggestion is that you add a feature category because the Odyssey has really amazing features (especially in the 2018 model) that the Sienna doesn't.

Unless you get the elite model you'll be missing the following unless you or the dealer add$ it. -blind side indicators w/mirrors -motorized power folding mirrors -roof rack and rails -full size moon roof -step bars -mud guards Pet Peeves: -radio always shuts off when you turn the motor off. There's no 5min standby like in Chevy or VW. -reverse camera does provide a 3sec delay once you shift to drive like in Chevy or VW. -interior materials are cheap -seat warmers do not turn off automatically when you turn off your engine.
I will pick up my new odyssey on Wednesday. Replacing a 2013 with a 2017 fully loaded touring. I was hoping to get a Toyota for the awd. We live in the country. I couldn't get a Toyota in my area. Our dealership did not have a single one in stock, and mine left me stranded one too many times in the last month , t was time to be replaced.
Hi Dave, Does your total sales number mean personal sales, or does it include fleet sales? I ask because you won't find a Honda Odyssey as a rental vehicle, but you will find the Toyota Sienna in rental fleets.
Totally Random comment but my wife and i just bought a Kia Soul based off your review and what we really liked about it.. We plan on continuing to watch your channel for when its time to replace my aging Dakota.. I havent looked latly but have you done any comparisons on Ram vs Chevy ? .. i cant stand fords.. and im a big guy and i seem to have more room in the MOPAR.

good vid. wow. Sienna....then you throw in more comfortable seats (subjective). ya, nice. the Xtra Gal tank/pass vol (I prefer overall cargo space being bigger). in the Honda are nice
These two vans are literally the SAME in terms of size, price, cargo capacity, passenger volume, etc. The things that set them APART from each other are RELIABILITY AND DRIVING DYNAMIC. The Honda Odyssey HAS serious Problems with reliability. The transmission of the Honda Odyssey is known to have major problems and needs major repair or replacement at early age. However, the Honda Odyssey does HAVE better DRIVING DYNAMIC compared to the Toyota Sienna. In the other hand, the Toyota Sienna is a solid vehicle which has almost none mechanical problems from brand new to second-hand use. The Toyota Sienna has very good engine and transmission that works every time the ignition is turned on. Most important, the Toyota Sienna is the only van in the market that has AWD for snowy, raining, etc road condition. NO ONE CAN BEAT TOYOTA'S RECORD OF SOLID RELIABILITY.
I have a 2017 Honda Odyssey (Bought it in 2019 (newer van) our 2017 Honda Odyssey van color is a dark grey) Then we have a 2011 Sienna (Bought it in 2016 (older van) our 2011 Sienna van color is Burgundy but my dad is going to get that one fixed cause it was a little broken and we're going to clean our older van)
