Another difference between an MLS and MLT, in some places MLTs are not allowed to release the results until an MLS reviews the results.

The Bachelor degree lab title depends on the state. In California, its not Medical Laboratory Scientist it's Clinical Laboratory Scientist as in Texas it is Medical Laboratory Scientist. I'm Medical Laboratory Technician in California with a associate's, right now, I am working in the microbiology lab testing and resulting Covid19 for children and hospital employees. In California, MLT can work in hematology and chemistry however California just pass a law we can do differential and type and screen for blood bank but my hospital doesn't do that for MLT. Hope this help at least in California :)
@RosaPerez
@RosaPerez 3 года назад
Yes that is true the title does depend on the state. I have never been a technician and I know some jobs let you do the same duties as a scientist and some do not. Thank you for sharing your experience in your state and what is allowed for you to do in your role. Here in Illinois at my job, MLT’s perform the same duties as a MLS/CLS but get paid less.

The reason I asked my question is because I've decided as of recently to go back to school to be in the medical field and the best way I have found to do that is to start with phlebotomy and the event that made me decide to go back to school for that is because last September in 2023 I lost my appendix and I spent the entire month of September there starting at the end of August to be exact and I enjoyed watching the nurses do what they did to me.

@RosaPerez
@RosaPerez 4 года назад
I’m sure definitely does apply in some states. But overall a lot of MLS are getting paid more now than probably they ever did because of the fact that there is not many people going into this field anymore because there’s less schools open to teach this major and as well as the growing population and a lot of people are retiring in the field.

Hey Rosa. I’m currently a student didn’t pick a major yet but I’m taking Anatomy & Physiology = Bio.(I don’t know why they r called Biology ) Anyway, this is my second semester that I’m taking those upper level classes and strangely I’m loving it. The reason why I’m saying strangely is because in HS wasn’t much into science at all or it may depend on how the instructor teaches it to students and makes it more pleasant, I guess. So lately I have been thinking about going into Lab. Technician not sure if I’m gonna like it or not. My sister use to be Lab. Science but she passed away from ovarian cancer during the pandemic. Back than I didn’t care to ask her much about this profession because I wasn’t in school and I knew there was lots of science involved so I said that’s not smth that I can do .. My Q. To u is - if I was to become a Med. Scientist but happened not to enjoy it doing as a job - all those science courses that we take would it bring it closer to getting another degree by just adding maybe few more other classes. Not sure if I’m making understanding but if I happened to wanna be a PA or a Nurse will all those classes that we take while becoming Med. Sc. Be helpful ( cut time in half) by going for just a little more to get a different degree such as a Nurse or a PA. I wish my sister was around to Answer me this. I do remember that she used to say that becoming a Med. Scientist is more difficult than nurse but as far as changing the lane would this classes apply to another medical profession expedite the process makes me Curious. Sorry, to write a bit long ( not fluent in English )

Hello, I appreciate you taking the time to ask me for advice. I like you, was not super passionate about science in high school but enjoyed it even more once I went to college. I say keep going on this path you are on. As for your major, I would pick something that allows you to easily transition into something else. You said you were possibly interested in nursing or PA. You can basically pick any major if you want to become a PA, you just have to make sure you complete a bachelor's degree program in the United States to be eligible for PA program interviews. As for nursing, you can always complete a bachelor's and then go back and do a 1.5-2 year accelerated nursing program or you can go straight into nursing while completing prerequisites for physician assistant school. If you do nursing, you can apply to nurse practitioner school which is easier if you take the nursing route. With that route, you will need about 1-2 years of nursing experience and about a 3.0 GPA to possibly get accepted into programs. With PA school, you will need about 2000 hours of patient care experience which can be completed while you are in your undergraduate education. You will also need to volunteer and participate in clubs and hold leadership positions to show you are a well rounded applicant. You still also have to apply to PA school through CASPA and then you may have to submit supplemental applications to various schools. Even then, you will still have to wait from specific programs and see if they will offer you interviews. This can cost you hundreds to thousands of dollars in both application fees and possible travel expenses. My advice to you would be to do more research on all of your possible interest (PA, NP, Lab Tech) and see which one interests you more. I will give you this one piece of advice. The majority of classes I took as a medical laboratory science major do overlap into the pre-requisites for Physician Assistant school. I am sorry about your sister no longer being here but I know she is very proud or you. Best of luck and I am happy to answer any more questions you have.

It depends definitely on the employer. At my job they were allowed to do everything that we were. The only difference would be that they would be paid less. It really just depends on the need of the laboratory and how they want to staff the lab.

I have a bit of a unique question that I could hopefully get your help on. I graduated with a B.S in General Biology back in 2018 and it’s been about a 5 year gap since I’ve got my degree that I unfortunately have not been using (tried to pursue grad school and other career paths instead to no avail lol). What would be the best way to get into this field? Should I get a post-bac? Or should I just apply straight up and do my best to explain my gap? I’m kind of leaning towards post-bac because I feel a bit rusty in my lab/bio knowledge (but I am passionate and can definitely learn it all again!) so maybe a course would be a good refresher. I’m just confused on what my options are here.

Apply to as many as possible if you want out of state opportunities. I say if you are at a college campus see if there are any professors who are looking for students to fill spots of students who will graduate soon. Also, try for opportunities at smaller colleges and universities. Work on your statement if they ask why you want to do research and tailor it to each one you apply to.
