Two of the most popular drive pedals from the Fulltone stable are the OCD and the Plimsoul. But why would you choose one over the other? I got a hold of both so I could find out What's The Difference?

Well both the OCD and the Plim Soul have hard-clipping OpAmp-style distortion at their disposal; the difference is that the PlimSoul stage 1 distortion also adds TS-style soft-clipping. I can make my PlimSoul sound like my OCD by turning stage 1 down to about 7:00, and dialing up the hard clipping from stage 2. But I can’t make my OCD sound like my PlimSoul…

I’m tried out 20 overdrive pedals over 3 hours at volume. I was narrowing it down to OCD and tube screamer, then somebody brought out the Plimsoul. Oh yea !
@richardj9016
@richardj9016 Год назад
@@RicardoLobomaulus The advantage of the Plimsoul is that you set up a TS sound with the main control, and then blend in the OCD sound to taste with the secondary control.

Dude...as always a very truthful review. Agree OCD is a marshall and Plimsoul is a tube screamer. I always wanted to get a Plimsoul. After your review I'm sticking with my OCD and get a cheaper boost pedal probably. OCD is beautifully transparent. I have version 1.3 that I will not let go for the world. Great for a tele because of it's bass response.
@hibernative
@hibernative 3 года назад
I have the OCD ver 1.6 and I wouldn't say it's transparent, but the thick saturation compensates for it. I sold my fuzz and just use this on high gain because it's so thick.

The PlimSoul mkII has a 3 pos Bass EQ switch to cut bass before hard-clipping, so you can tame the bass at higher gain settings to avoid flubbing out.

This is the comparison I always wanted to hear, but with an OCD 1.7 or earlier, which has a huge mids presence. OCD 2.0 and forward is just an entirely different pedal.
@kosmicwizard

To my ears the 2.0 sounds closer to the 1.1 than anything 1.4-1.7 does. Cheers.

If you have a small combo that's dragging a##, or doesn't sound good at low volume, the OCD is a simple, all purpose, solution.EQ, compression, ( great with Blues Jrs and AC15's)- and I think it sounds better low gain/ clean boost than cranked.( Used to put one on the end of the chain, gain low)The versions DO matter, as does the voltage used ( built in buffers, etc). One of my first pedal purchases was a Plimsoul, knowing nothing about it, - but I kept it for years.I prefer TS 808 types( which took a decade to fully appreciate), and this is an expanded version.The voltage makes an even bigger difference. It's truly unfortunate that MF got himself mixed up in politics, as he made boutiques , - Fuzzes, especially, - when no one else was. TBH/ TBF, whatever your politics, almost all of his designs are superior.

I can get my v1 plimsoul to sound like my 1980 mxr distortion+ on an AC15. It's a worthy pedal. Crank those volumes knobs first and then gain.

@@RaymondGinn1978 If you have a vintage MXR D+, then skip it. The Plimsoul is more versatile than OCD, but it's all subjective

I second what they all said! One of the best demos on YT. I subscribed because I’m more than middle age pedal junkie. I like the rock style of your songs or jams. If you didn’t live so darn far away I’d say let’s jam sometime ! Looking forward to watching your videos. BTW this was particularly interesting to me. I own the original OCD (I’ll never get rid of it) and my second OCD I think was the second release. I don’t know if that’s called 1.1V. I cannot bond with my Plimsoul. It sounds too muddy to my ears. There’s so many variables that affect tone. You got some nice lead tones from it. I like the sound of my original OCD more than the version you demonstrated. .

I use the OCD for lead solos. I think it works well for rhythm tracks too. It's really the what guitar and amp you use. My Plimsoul is much fuzzier (less focused). Both pedals where purchased early on. First versions. So, your mileage my vary.

My rule with pedals is if you have a Marshall in a box pedal pair it with a Fender or Fender style amp. With a Tube Screamer style pedal, it can work well with ither style amp, but tends to work well when the amp itself has enough grit to work with. OCD makes great pedals.

I have a germanium OCD, which sounds fantastic with bridge pickups... not so much with neck pickups. Muffled and muddy unless the gain is at like 10:00. In the Plimsoul like that for leads or is it smoother with more clarity?

PLIMSOUL hasxmore gain in my opinion

Great idea to compare these two. Convinced me to keep my ole OCD and pass on the Plimsoul. Is the Plim sort of a light-middy type, where as the TS or Fulldrive are heavier mids? PS - try OCD all knobs around 11:00, HP on. After 16 yrs of playing the OCD, that's the sweet spot on my version(later versions may vary), and at this setting it works as always on, or stack it into another pedal/boost for leads. Really shines at high amp volumes.
