Imagine if vehicle manufacturers didn't have to worry about vehicle exhaust emissions so much, to have only the regulations from 1996 but now have this amazing fuel saving technology, we seriously could get 40+mpg from diesel engines in half ton trucks.

Amazingly fuel efficient but absolute slugs whenever you want them to be fast and absolute pull you back in the seats when you don’t wanna go fast. @@scott6074 I know what you were calling cap on, I’m saying I don’t find it hard to believe as I’ve owned a variety of these engines now and they’ve all been very impressive with fuel economy, my grand Cherokee alone has DPF delete, EGR delete, straight pipe exhaust & a tune, I’m pushing closer to 300 HP and about 510 FT/LB torque but I did the 3 cord pull stock, since the upgrade I’ve towed heavier loads and gotten better fuel mileage then before the delete. If his is modded in a similar way ( which he never commented on so I’m speculating here ) but I 100% can vouch that those numbers arnt unbelievable at all. Also very nice, what year raptor and would you recommend them for a farm / occasional tow rig? I’ve been heavily debating getting a raptor for the past few months here since the new farm we moved too is super bumpy but dunno much about their towing abilities, just know they have some of the best suspensions and can take bumps/jumps better then a Cherokee.

I'm glad they did 2WD so we could see just what these new power trains can do without adding elements that destroy their potentials. We already know that adding 4WD will take away most of what is good about a work truck but that most people choose them anyway. Maybe they should put 36's mud tires, an on off road packages, add a brush guard, leveling kit so we can see how much we can destroy good engineering.
@exparrot9074

@@gregoryfaulkner5345 even with snow tires and weight in the back a 2WD truck will not make it up my hill in the winter. 4WD is a necessity in Upstate NY if you intend to drive though snow and get over the hills. I'm glad we saw what the 2WD trucks could do, but I still want to see what the 4WD trucks will do.
@dchawk81
@dchawk81 4 года назад
@@gregoryfaulkner5345 Wait why is 4WD a bad thing in a work truck? There's a lot of work done by trucks that isn't on dry pavement. Very few trucks are 2WD anymore because people realize without something in the back weighing it down (the same weight that saps fuel economy), 4WD can be necessary. The powertrain losses on an unused, decoupled 4WD system are so minimal that it's not worth not having most of the time. You need a huge fleet that absolutely never uses it to see the benefits.

I would love to see a 3/4 ton diesel vs 1/2 ton diesel on the same conditions, comparing max load on the 1/2 on each truck. Might help some of us who are on the line for typical towing applications, but could be swayed up to the bigger truck and a bigger trailer in the future
@dchawk81
@dchawk81 4 года назад
As someone who went from half ton to 1 ton, just get the bigger truck straight off if you can afford it. Fuel economy, power, etc aside you'll appreciate and even love the extra stability when trailering...even if you only ever planned on towing 8-10k that the half tons can do. Especially if any of your trailers is a box. Having said that, if all i ever planned to pull was my open deck car trailer (9990GVWR) the half ton would be fine because of airflow. But as soon as I got the 1 ton I was able to pull the open like it was nothing. And the 24' enclosed that my half ton technically could do but white knuckled, the 1 ton just doesn't care is back there. It feels the weight getting going and you see the fuel usage, but one handed cruising at 70mph is nothing. The half ton scared the bejeesus out of me at 60 with trucks passing and crosswinds, etc. I'm the one passing in the 1 ton. Construction zones aren't scary anymore, straight as an arrow, narrow lanes no big deal. It's glorious.

@@meals24u For fun when I first got it I pulled an Acura on a trailer and it got 15 average on a loop of half highway and half state route with towns. I ran about 62-65 and occasionally punched it up to 70 around traffic. The state road was 55 max.
@dchawk81
@dchawk81 4 года назад
@@meals24u For the record, I don't think I'd get a diesel for a 3k boat. I doubt the fuel savings would offset the premium paid for the drivetrain. A good V8 like the Ford Coyote I had would be fine, IMHO. It was fine even pulling a Lincoln Navigator on the open trailer and didn't use enough gas to warrant a diesel upgrade. A boat would be nothing. All vehicles suck more fuel when towing so there's no way around that. The Nissan is probably just exceptionally thirsty by today's standards, but if it's paid off and still reliable, that's another thing to consider. You can burn a lot of fuel for a car payment.

It's difficult to get an accurate comparison in fuel economy running unloaded on such a short test loop. The Ram used 2.00 gallons, and the Chevy used 1.95 gallons. That difference could have easily gone the other way due to simple factors involved in topping up the tank. A longer mpg loop should be used.

karl yukon I agree. I was hoping to hear that they had addressed the lower bearing and press fit cam gear issues. Instead they made the rings thinner and mucked around with a few other things that may come back to bite them in the a$$. It seams all the big 3 have issues with their oil burners they are putting into their 1/2 tons. From what I hear Ford isn’t getting nearly the mileage they were claiming, Ram is having engine issues and they don’t have a great reputation for the reliability of their electrical system and new GM engine has an aluminum block and the timing chain is at the back of the motor and the oil pump is run by a wet belt. You have to separate the engine from the transmission to work on any of them and the engineers at GM say the engine has a 150K life span.

I like this vid. I have to admit that I am a would-be Chevy/GMC person if I were to be partial to one make over the others. But it seems to me that the Ram, many times, has been a no-brainer with these modern trucks at things like this. And the Silverado is the ultimate underdog that I am so glad to see make a come-back at something. And if I'm correct, the 3.0L diesel Silverado still has under 300ft/lbs torque while the Ram is up to 480 but has been out for a while and been re-designed.

I gotta admit I love my '14 ecodiesel grand cherokee with the gde tune, but I've never ever ever been a fan of v6 engines. To me they feel like they have the torque of a 4cyl down low with the fuel efficiency of a much larger engine. Basically, I just don't enjoy the way they deliver their power. I've always loved a straight 6 configuration. To me they've always delivered nearly instant torque down low and given fantastic fuel economy compared to v8 counterparts. That's why I've always preferred Toyota supra's to corvettes and i6 jeeps compared to v8 off road monsters. I've never owned an i6 Cummins, but it's definitely on my "must own" list. I purchased my ecodiesel jeep instead of a Cummins 2.5 years ago because I'm averaging 30k+ miles per year. I tow between 1200lbs to 6800lbs every other weekend, but a little ecodiesel was more economical for my purposes driving 600mi/week unloaded. Of the 30k+ miles per year that I drive, at most I'm only towing 3k-5k miles of that, and like I said, the trailers are only 1200lbs to 6800lbs depending on the project that week. I'm extremely interested in the chevy 3.0l diesel simply because it's an i6, so the torque down low compared to the v6 ecodiesel should be immense. I don't really give a rats ass about peak torque, I mean sure it's great having a lot of torque, but really what matters is area under the curve. I want to know how these two deliver their power on a dyno, on the same day, same conditions, same time. The numbers that matter are how much torque each engine puts down off idle up to around 3.5k-4.5k rpm. The area under the curve matters so much more than peak, it really irritates me when people just "parrot" the claimed peak power number. Imo that i6 3.0l diesel could be something truly special. Let's get all 3 3.0l diesels and have a dyno day and overlay all 3 dyno graphs to compare the numbers at various points of the rpm range where the engines are usually being run day-to-day. Please TFL make it happen! ♥

WRT to the Chevy...Based on the gas vs diesel prices in my neighborhood of $1.97 for regular unleaded and $2.45 for diesel...Even at the rated 33 mpg highway you are only saving $2940 in fuel costs over the 5.3 over 150,000 miles at it's rated 21 mpg highway. I bet the mileage delta between the diesel and the gas V8 is less in city driving as well. Then there is the DEF fluid costs. The cost differential on the build and price tool for the 2020 truck on the LT trim is $5310 for extra for the 3.0 over the 5.3 and $6705 more versus the 2.7 I4 turbo gas engine. You have to really want a diesel to get this, because for the average suburban commuter you're not going to save any money on fuel unless you drive it 270,091 miles or more.

I’d be really curious to see a long term longevity test (100k+ miles of mixed city, Highway, loaded and unloaded use) to see how they stack up in terms of reliability. Both trucks I think would make a great truck, I just have a hard time trusting either one. The eco diesels suffered from cam gear slippage and emissions issues, and reading up on the duramax specs and how it’s made I’m not so sure I like all the aluminum used in the construction considering the higher heat diesels put out, even with iron cylinder liners. Also not so sure I like the fact that there’s up to 10 injection events per combustion cycle. Sounds ridiculously over complicated and prone to failure.
