I just take it as a mirror, like negative -i=1/i division is asking how many times can 'b' fit in 'a' for a/b, so a mirror is like the infinite case till I notice rays and realize it's not a pocket dimension. But if it was it's one that seems to rotate the imaginary image by 'i' (or pi) and then inverting (L->R) hence the negative. But, if we continue with this analogy within the Cayley construction or even Coxeter we loose those and have to look at geometric algebra. --> I also like the notion that as I'm able to fit more 'data' into other 'data' I should gain higher resolution so for C/x as x->0 we should get higher resolution since more samples can fit, sort of like polishing a mirror, the more tangential planes you have the higher the fidelity mirror

I feel like there’s a distinction to be made between objects with opposing qualities, and objects that are opposite, if that makes sense. Like, Steam, Water & Ice have opposing states of matter, but I wouldn’t necessarily call them opposite of each other. Meanwhile, I feel like complimentary colors (Red-Cyan, Black-White, Green-Magenta, Yellow-Blue, etc) are more appropriate to describe as opposites. Though it is a subjective thing. Really, the concept of opposite is a human invention; it’s a category we apply to objects to better understand the world. Without us, everything just is. As always, awesome work! I’ve been binging your channel and I love what new stuff you bring to the table (before it inevitably breaks lol)

13:36 You need to make 0 an exception. Otherwise, you uniquely define... a field with only one element: Multiply the opposite of 0 by 0. By definition, you get 1. But 0 is absorbing, so you get 0. Therefore, 1=0. By multiplying by any number, you get that it's 0, too. I've only used rules mentioned here. Also, I didn't use addition. If an operation has an inverse of an absorbing element, it operates on a set of 1 element

Before watching it my best assumption would be that it depends on what kind of function this 2 is the result of. For the context of an additive function, the opposite is whatever causes to 2 become the "additive identity" (or 0) when added to 2. The multiplicative identity, 1, follows the same logic, meaning 1/x is the "opposite" of x in that case. In the exponential case it's a bit more elaborate I feel, because you need to identify what it means to have an "exponential identity". One might say that roots and powers are opposite, but those are really just multiplicative opposites IN the exponent. When you multiply 2 numbers, A × B = C, A and B are "opposites" when C is the multiplicative identity. The same logic should apply for A ^ B = C, but the major issue we see with exponents compared to the previous two cases is that they are NOT communtative, so an "opposite" B for A might not also make sense to say A is such an "opposite" for B. It's all dependent on context.

I'd say 1. 2 is a major threshold that breaks uniqueness, singularity and the like, and not being first is a pretty big deal, the difference between the other cardinals pales in comparison. You could say 3, 4, etc. are also opposites of 1, but 2 is the most significant because it is ironically the 1st (to not be the 1st). Also, Number 1 and Number 2.

Before watching: I would define the opposite of 2 as the inverse of 2. The inverse of 2 depends on the system being used - In addition, it would be -2, in multiplication it would be 1/2, and etc for different operational systems. That's a good enough answer for me.

f(√2)=a f⁻¹a=√2 "a" is the "opposite" of √2... (Whatever "a" & "f" are. 😕) One way to get √2 is via the Pythagorean triangle 📐, in terms of vectors: √2 {↗}= 1{→} + 1{↑}. Clearly, we can say that geometrically speaking, the opposite of √2 here is in the opposite diagonal direction, so here we have: √2 {↙} = - √2 {↗} = 1{←}+1{↓} There is no way to invert a vector in a multiplicative way unless we extend this to quaternions, but I'm NOT going there .. 😵 Update: Thankfully I found an online quaternion calculator that shows the inverse of √2 {↗} when written in the form q=(0,1,1,0) is q⁻¹=(0,-0.5,-0.5,0) and, of course the magnitude of q here is |q|=√(1²+1²+0²)=√2.

My first thought was ½ since it times 2 makes 1, two sides of the same coin, or should I say *opposite* sides of *one* coin. After watching I have many more thoughts, for example are there subtractional and divisional identities? Square and cube identities?
@hectobreak8097
@hectobreak8097 6 месяцев назад
For subtraction and division there are right-identities, for example 0 is the right-identity for subtraction because any number minus 0 leaves the number intact. These two operators have no left-identity, since there exists no number x such that for any other number y, x - y = y. Squaring and cubing are operations indeed, but they are unary operations instead of binary, so it makes no sense to talk about identities.

The opposite of 2 can be 10 as on a 12 digit clock moving 2 places forward can be 'undone' by moving another 10 places forward. Also moving 10 places back gives the same result as moving 2 places forward. So 2 is the same as -10 and 10 in this system is the same as -2. If you don't allow negative numbers in this system 10 would be the first opposite of 2 Using this definition of opposite you could also say the opposite of 2 is 22 or 34 etc. and call that the second, third, etc opposite of 2

I was thinking about this a while ago, and I thought about converting the number to binary, and switching all the 0’s to 1’s and vice versa. So 5 would go from 101 to 010, which would be 2. 10 would go from 1010 to 0101, which would be 5. So the opposite of 2 would be 1 using this logic. What’s interesting is that some numbers have the same opposite, and most numbers are not opposites of each other. (I also noticed the length of the video was 16:18, the first four digits of the golden ratio I believe :D)
@landsgevaer

You mean the opposite of 5 is 2, I presume. Not inverting leading zeros?
@king5327
@king5327 6 месяцев назад
In binary, you can use 'one's complement' to create the negative number. This includes *all* the infinite leading zeroes. So *1110 is negative one. This has the problem of there being a positive and negative zero, however, so we instead use two's complement (flip all the bits, add one) to negate a number. This is because *1111 + 1 = *0000 - so if you flip the bits and add one you end up flipping them back. This is also why signed numbers go from -(2^n) to (2^n)-1. The zero shakes out of the positives.

11:54 kind of a dumb question, but couldnt you solve a left-side identity by using a modified root? If you have b?a=a you can make it work by having a grade lower than a square root (a line root? A point root), where instead of an implied 2 in the top left of the symbol there's a 1? So ¹v(a)=a .

Just think of the CPT symmetry of the universe, if you invert charge/parity/time/charge&parity/charge&time/parity&time you will be left with a system that ever so slightly differs to our own. Only if you mathematically negate parite,charge&time physics will work exactly as it would if we never inverted it to begin with. There is a neutral element and an inverse element. The neutral element doesn't change the term. That is 0 for addition and subtraction, and 1 for multiplication, division and exponentiation. The inverse element is the number with which you get the neutral element. That is the negative number for addition and the inverted fraction for multiplication. For subtraction and division it ist the number itself, and for exponentiation it's 0.

Orderability, arrangability. So you have two static clouds, we can apply any physics to any scale of a set of clouds, but their arrangeable orderability make then combine in different ways. two would define a location relative to the the other cloud, so a words definition is based upon the merits of constraints allowed in such a system. The two might might be a modification allowed on a super-system or a subsystem. Hidden and overt consequences, like a hole vs a via, or island. A notion of probability chaining for when we suppose its a seasonal demand on a condition, such as epochs and eras, or a zero scale time where our hidden systems have undergone some rigorous scientific methodology to determine them to have binary operations inherent to that quality in repeatable conditions. The repeatability of conditions occur to our basis reality of a cloud, as we assume two opperating clouds. The clouds have evolved and grown to use supplies and fall in love, vastly leaning towards originality by 25% of consumption 14% misderation as chaos sport to increase the tollerance of their intolerance in lou of non-combat a terra.

I wonder if you can create a number x that could be: n + x != n AND n * x = x I.e. its absorbing but not an addition identity. Itd be easy to program some kind of pseudo number to behave like that, but I dont know if it exists in or would even be of any use in any kind of mathematics done today.

Interesting question. It turns out such a system would not be distributive. Consider the following two statements that follow from the axiom n*x = x. 2*x = x (1) 0*x = x (2) Subtract (2) from (1) to get 2*x - 0*x = x - x Since x-x=0 (so addition behaves like in real numbers) and by distributivity we get (2-0)*x = 0 Which further simplifies to 2*x = 0 A contradiction! I wonder if such a number system could be possible if we don't require distributivity. Maybe someone could look into that.

My initial thought was -1/2 As I’m going through the video (I’m currently at 5:30 ) I still feel like it’s a valid answer, but not the only possible one

Fun fact, for the operation a^ln(b) 1 is an absorbing element.

and the opposite of combo class is boring 🔥cool vid, or technically speaking a very hot vid XD I now imagine the opposite of something as being opposite of a point and that point has to be known as well, for the pumpkin face it's the emotion, for 2 to -2 it's addition, for 2 to 1/2 it's multiplication and so on

What. I mean...of course you can graph it? I'm pretty sure the idea is that there isn't a singular number that works for all values of b. I really don't think he was claiming the equation has no solutions.

@@winteringgoose oh ok. That makes more sense. I didn’t understand that he was looking for a constant number. Thank you for clarifying
