I was classically trained and started playing for my church in 1981 at 15 years old. I had some ability to play by ear, but it was basic chords only. After more than 40 years, I heard a tip to play all the hymns you know in one key. Now after a year, I can play just about any hymn in any key. I must say it is a different world and so wonderful and joyous! I could never imagine playing by ear the way I do now. It has been such an unbelievable change for me. I’m still struggling to convince myself not to be afraid to play hymns in church prelude without the music. I greatly appreciate you and your talent. I have seriously thought about signing up for your classes on playing by ear or arranging my own songs. I don’t think I would actually stop to take to time or have the time to devote to watching the videos and going through the material. You make it so tempting to sign up that it’s hard for me to say wait. Lol. You’re so amazing 😊

To me playing by ear means picking up an instrument without any training and figuring out how to play it by listening to music.

I also learned to play by ear at the beginning. But then, when I decided to be a Church Musician, I started learning to play by reading notation (numerical notations) with chord symbols. In Indonesia most of the church songs are available in numerical notations.
