When you think you understood something, minor scale, minor chords, play slowly. You click a guy video, somehow you always manage to learn something new. "Suspended chords that want to resolve", aha moment let's try it in the DAW you haven't had opened in two weeks. I got a list of chords and scales and what emotions they convey. But lack the context of when to use them, there's a lot of hidden music knowledge that only exist in the minds of veteran musicians. Nobody writes this down in books and if they do it's a small paragraph in a 300 page book. That's why these videos are great.

When I was young, I had lots of piano lessons. I always wanted to learn how to improvise and to really understand how music is working, but the teachers only taught me to play the notes, to write down scales and chords, without any explanation how it all is linked together, and what you can do with it. A few months ago, I have found this great channel, where Guy is explaining in a great, comprehensive, funny and fully inspiring way how to put all these pieces together and to be creative with music. Now, after 40 years, learning piano playing in a new way and creating music is so much fun! I'm also listening to music in a different and more distinct way now. Thank you so much Guy for your great videos!

This is probably sort of related but slightly more focused. I am very interested in post romantic music like, for example Bruckner, seven symphony. I know this is a huge topic post, Romantic harmony, but I was wondering if you could see what you can distil into a 15 or 20 minute video. I really enjoy your presentation style, and your perceptiveness. I think I will have to get my own garden gnome, and paint him with musical symbols, just as an inspiration, and a reminder of your great videos

I have quite a decent base of knowledge in music, i am a music teacher after all, however, i have never compose on computer. Great video. The only thing you need to write sad music, is a porcellan gnome! All points Guy mentioned are valid. I just realized how powerfuk rubato is to drive the mood. I'm just not sure how to apply it technically in the DAW. Should I make stepwise tempo jumps or drawing S curves? Or should I add a few beats to a bar, e.g. making one 6/4 bar instead auf a 4/4? Another thing is sound / instrument selection. Guy applied it by using strings. To me there are a couple of obvious choices to convey sadness. For examples the already mentioned con sordino strings, a soft piano or an oboe.

Dear Mr. Michelmore, I've just subscribed to your channel, and to say that I'm impressed is to say nothing at all! I have a question if you perhaps don't mind it: are the examples that you've played in this video-and, I shall surmise, the other ones-available as sheet notation (or, second best, MIDI files; I could make the former from the latter indeed), in the free or the paid course, or anywhere at all? Sheet music is much easier to analyse to me. Thank you!

Would it make sense (disregarding the monetary issue) for a producers/directors to hire a different composer for some of the markets they're targeting for release, based on their different perception of music and how it affects that particular audience? You mentioned how a minor key doesn't necessarily mean sad in some cultures, and that question came to mind.

I am having a hard time trying to drive the action of a film scene having to stay around the same tonal centre, sinnce there are only so many chords that fit the key of the drone string..
