Tanabata is one of my favorite Japanese holidays! 🎋 (it’s what this emoji is)
Also known as the Star Festival, Tanabata brings communities together to commemorate the legendary tale of two star-crossed lovers who were separated, Orihime and Hikoboshi.
We celebrate by creating Tanzaku, or writing wishes on brightly colored papers, and making fun origami shapes to decorate on bamboo branches, hoping that our wishes will come true.
This festival happens every year on July 7th, and always has mesmerizing displays of brightly decorated bamboo trees all over Japan and it really makes it feel like summer.
Hope one day you’ll get to visit Japan during this time to write and hang your own wish! If not in Japan, you can always make one here.
