They are, but when you compare them to the Liszt etudes, the Chopin ones are much more consistent in terms of addressing the technique. Many say the Liszt etudes are more difficult, but my last teacher and I were agreed that the relentless figuration of the Chopin etudes makes them much more difficult as a whole.
You'd have to work on your technique a bit, if this is anything to go by, or you'll really hurt yourself. Not kidding. Try some Schmidt exercises, work on connecting and overall legato while staying relaxed. You don't want your ability to come from your wrists and feel tense in the tops of your hands. If you can't "break" the tension in your wrists while you play, you've got something to work on. I wouldn't play quickly until you master legato with finger speed, otherwise the muscles that compensate may end up crippling you. It happened to a friend of mine when she transferred to university.
