Hey nowhere productions. As you might remember, a good while back I suggested to you a the idea of a punk genre based on old jungle stories. Well, as it turns out, the genre is already punky. Steampunk already has a lot of lost world and jungle stories due to its themes of exploration and discovery. DieselPunk is based on classic old pulp when jungle stories were popular, so those two overlap often as well. Bamboo technology and advanced lost civilizations are also already common. Furthermore, monsters and Cryptids are everywhere. I have discovered this as I worked on a TvTropes article to help other writers, which prompted me to do research into the genre and especially history in real life, and based on what I’ve found, I do still think there is a lot of potential for an actual punk genre that actually earns its title of punk for being rebellious, darker and edgier. Basically Stone Punk was to shiny so we had to make it dirty. The name is still being workshopped (Kiplingpunk, Bushcraftpunk, Congopunk), I personally think you should pick it being the punk guy in all. There is a very basic idea of what this punk genre is though. It’s mainly the basic jungle genre with the classic environmentalism and idealism stripped away and pulling more inspiration from real life. This tackles more mature themes than saving the trees, things like genocide, political corruption, cult psychology, human trafficking, human experimentation etc. Now there it’s grey on grey morality in a lawless hostile environment, making it tonally more like a spaghetti western, which makes sense given all the outlaws and mercenaries at work down there in real life. If you happen to have a classic all good hero, they are going to probably face percussion or end up fighting their friends for their values. (Think Captain America) If you have a classic poacher, expect them to be a general venturous smuggler doing things just to get by, and because poaching doesn’t necessarily involve killing or even cruelty, they might even be more of a rogue like Han Solo, but there’s a greater variety of outlaws and villains now too. These include mercenaries and bounty hunters, highwaymen, gangs and syndicates, river pirates, cannibal merchants, eco terrorists, rogue soldiers, warlords, dictators, and even mega corporations (drunk with power instead of just greedy). If you have a classic human hunting egomaniac, expect them to be another mercenary or a straight up serial killer. If you have a classic witch doctor, expect them to be a manipulative and abusive cult leader rather than superstitious. That is if they aren’t a full on evil sorcerer or working with eldritch abominations. They might even opt to tempt your hero to join them or convert to their cult rather kidnapping and torturing them, though they won’t refrain from the latter. Or maybe the hostile tribe experienced a military coup with a fake corrupt chief in power. Forget the classic “colonialism bad” narrative. Now you have full on rebel alliances, possibly also terrorists, fighting against an evil colonial empire, who although evil and possibly dystopian or Nazis by any other name, they are likely competing against another more evil empire for the same territory. It’s also more than likely that the dictatorship is completely local to the country. Hostile tribes are also more than likely to be dystopian. The narrative might even be subverted by the local power getting aid from a more benevolent superpower in a war, and then it’s subverted again when the superpower turns out to be malevolent and turns the local political power into a puppet state. Tribes are also depicted as small countries in this punk, so expect more Worldbuilding in languages and cultures. Though not all of them are hostile, at least at first, have civil wars, violent coups, and invade each other. They also have more defined trade with outside powers, so expect hostile tribes to not only supply prisoners of war to local slavers, but also have guns, probably steam or diesel powered. Of course the heroes aren’t immune to being morally grey, depending on the author, an explorer, classic great white hunter or archeologist is probably in it for the money. Tarzanesque characters are more likely akin to drifters and outcasts than the classic knight errant. They are fluent in multiple languages and are also depicted in a more ninja esc fashion than as ape men. They might be bounty hunters or have some other profession. That is if they are good, as they might be outlaws or maybe the jungle girl is less worshipped as a queen or goddess and instead is an egomaniac with a god complex. The missionary is possibly more of an old west circuit rider, going on adventures as something of a knight errant. That is if they are good, they might be prejudiced, be colonial, or even be cult leader. The professor is probably more of a genius MacGuyvering inventor doing experiments away from civilization that would make Tesla proud. That is if they’re good, and not a sadistic biologist trying to play god like the High Evolutionary. If there are talking animals, it might be a product of their sick experiments. Also forget the classic tranquil and peaceful nature that the story is telling us to protect. Now instead of classic gorillas and lions, you have more nightmarish insects, diseases, parasites. Animals are far more dangerous like in real life. Paralyzing dart frogs, sharks, freshwater stingrays are all here and even the cutest chimp will probably tear you to shreds. (Look up Amazonian fauna sometime for other nightmares) That is assuming not actual monsters, cryptids, dangerous automata, or animalistic abominations. Non of this means dangerous animals won’t become dangerous pets to fight with characters in battle. If dinosaurs exist in the setting, expect them to be more like dragons, and even used as mounts. There are also more thorny plants and poisonous plants, able to melt your skin off, like in real life, but a classic man eating plant or botanical abomination is also welcomed. Aesthetic: Fashion: Pulls inspiration from real life and the classical jungle stories, but everything is more unique. Outlaws probably use some of their surplus to wear exotic pelts as outerwear. They might have robotic arms due to the numerous ways you can loose a limb in Expect to see a lot of boho fashion as well. Tribal and tarzanesque clothing also is based more on real tribal cultures. Modesty depends on the author and the Worldbuilding in the culture, but expect more realistic colorful or patterned tribal clothing. They probably still go barefoot or wear sandals. Also expect things like pelts as outerwear. That is assuming these character don’t trade for more modern clothing, even then expect them to still go barefoot, wear boho fashion or have some other earthy characteristic. Even if a classic fur bikini is used, expect a lot of accessories and jewelry. Weapons are also more unique. A Tribal or Tarzanesque character might opt for other melee weapons than a simple knife, even a sword or battle axe. A hunter might opt for a bow, a sawed off shot gun or any more punky weapons they can get their hands on. Apart from clothing or weapons, other races or non humans are far more common, among indigenous and explorer characters alike. Technology: Part of the asthmatic, expect all previous steampunk, dieselpunk, bamboo technology and ancient advanced technology or afrofuturism to be turned up to eleven. Colonialists have steam powered ray guns and tribes are building mechas from wood and pulleys. Although jungle stories have technically been a genre of science fiction, expect to see more magic as well. The Shaman is no longer close to healing jungle spirits and painting with all the colors of the wind. Now they’re a powerful wizard if not a powerful identical or angelic being guiding mortals like Gandalf. For all you know, your lost world might be borderline Narnia. Expect to see more locations like underground cities, space planets, jungle dimensions or even simple brawling cantinas. Stunts are also more over the top, from taming and riding dinosaurs, to extreme animal based martial arts. The greats; The original Jumanji played into some of the tone of this punk. The original Edger Rice Burroughs novels, although highly racist, also is tonally this punk, even openly admitting the jungle is more dangerous and lawless than the old west. Robertson Caruso and Swiss Family Robertson both have a lot of bamboo tech. Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom Real life(X)Punk: The most lawless and dangerous aspects of the jungle happen in real life already. Everything from a whole cannibal trade to genocide are all nightmare fuel you can look up on your own. Also those primitive technology guys on RU-vid fit this genre, but obviously far more aesthetically than tonally. @@NylasWUPMe too. Even though it can work in post apocalyptic setting, in alternate timelines, on other planets etc. It just rolls off the tongue better. Most jungle stories of the pulps were set in the Congo anyways

@mr_indie_fan 8 месяцев назад
Also: Amnesia the dark descent? (This one fits a bit more) I know that Faith is a bit more modern in it's setting but it does check some of the boxes for Dreadpunk, which is why im curious
