I agree that the price you charge is nothing we need to know. What we need is your thought process to help us fix certain repairs. That is what makes your videos great.
Eric, I like th e Gulf cap.. I have a model 1895 Marlin .357 lever gun that I bought from Merlin Breaux, a VP of Gulf Oil, in a small town in Texas. Lets go Brandon
Hi Eric! After you installed the Powerstop brakes on your wife's Kia, I bought a set of pads/slotted/drilled rotors for my '14 Ram 1500 4x4 and they are phenomenal! They were $100 more than Autozone stock replacements, but well worth it. I followed their break-in procedure to a t. 76k miles on installation, 83k now and I love them. Just thought I'd share my experience. Thanks for doing what you do and sharing your experiences with us.
No states use more salt than the chicagland area ! My 94 chevy s10 always got a good underbody wash after every snowstorm ! No fluid film or wax - bs ! 658,000 miles and still loving it !
We got down to 2 last night, thankfully the sun came out today in TN. I took auto mechanics the last two years of high school back in the early 80s, and although I don’t really care to do work for anyone else, I’m not scared to turn a wrench on anything I own. Your understanding of electronics is what amazes me. When I started, you could climb into the engine bay and work on anything.
I got my powerstop brakes on both of my half ton and 3/4 ton. I wish we had a manufacturing company that made them in the United States. Maybe Callahan will make them 😂 Very cool that you are helping your local school and getting some kid on the right path 👍 Thank you for all you do and helping people drive safe vehicles
I like your channel alot , likely because of your honesty about how you feel about the vehicle your working on for example, and now about discussing pricing. THXS
Eric my son and I are in the automotive machine shop business and have been for 50 years after watching you work the customer gets his money s worth what ever charge the customer gets his money’s worth we try to do the same keep up the good work from nc
Luv ya no matter what. I would always trust you and would never hesitate to have you work on my truck. You and Mrs. O are the best. I've learned so much from you. Right on brother O!
Hi I live in Chicago and a few weeks ago it was very cold and alot of the electric cars were down and one of the tow trucks driver said he can't get it into neutral because the battery was dead ya those tesla no good in the cold
You're such a nice guy Eric. I know you'd like to help youtubers but you made it really clear how the logistic just does not work. I wish you were my hometown mechanic though 😉 thx for all the videos your channel is awesome and ive learned so much.
Thanks for the video laying in my hospital bed watching videos your videos always make my day. I broke my hip in 3 different locations. Had my first surgery where they put in screws and a pin. Wait for the next one. Keep up the great videos it is truly refreshing to watch.
I bought a set of Detroit Axel drill and slotted rotors and pads 2 years ago for my 14 Ford Taurus AWD and they are still smooth as glass. Prior 2 years I was going through a set every 6 months and getting the dreaded shimmy under braking. It takes a lot to stop 4500 lbs.
3:48 good morning Eric and all… I too am a automotive repair mechanic (part time auto repair tech, full-time plumber and drain clearer guy) and I’ve been using those “Power Stop” rotors for quite a while in my vehicle (and customers as well) because I got so much stuff in, I use the severe duty pads to go with those rotors, and I am very happy with them with the long wear and the stopping ability. Have a great day, folks, every day! Edward H. in CT USA
I'm surprised I never hear anyone talking about RP342 (cosmoline). It's like something we used in the Navy called Grade 4, used for protecting fittings and ground connections on Naval aircraft. It comes out of the can like syrup and dries to a wax consistency. I just ordered 3 cans to use on my 1993 F250, California truck.
Idk if true but many years ago when I learned automotive, I remember someone had told me that what they put on brake rotors to preserve them from rusting while on the shelf was cosomoline or similar to. That same stuff we remove with brake clean before putting them into service.
i have been trying that cosmoline on my rig's prop shaft and 3rd member, because the woolWax HV just whips right off with the rotation and heat and wind tunnel on that 3rd member
Love Powerstop slotted pads and rotors .... been running them on my 2000 jeep cherokee for 2 sets over the last few years ... no warp, good wear on both rotor/pads .... and their rices are reasonable for great quality
$90 for your talent is not enough. Dealers charge $150+ in my area and the kids they hire don't know jack......Kudos for you being a great moral person!. I've been a mechanic off and on for 40 years....absolutely understand your situation. Good for your for having a good heart & charge an honest wage but I think you are cutting yourself short. Everyone needs to make a living for their family.
I bought a rust bucket silverado, 2010 from Maryland and found the bleeder valves rusted completely off. Time for some power stop replacements. Expensive but brakes are important. Like lipstick on a pig.
Speaking of rust, I recently started using Fluid Film cans on my own vehicles based on your recommendations. Great stuff, even though it smells like dead sheep for a day.
Prices are different in states cause Inc,taxes ,laws so can't be all the same and people don't realize that cheap is not better, cause it means crap work
My wife is crazy about washing her Tacoma it’s a 2012 and looks great inside and out. The frame is in great shape but I’m worried that washing it so much will keep water in all of the little hidden pockets letting rust to form. My 02 Tacoma has some frame rust but I’m treating it trying to keep it from falling apart.
I heard something during my ride home tonight that Chicago electric car drivers are complaining about battery efficiency in -20 degree temperatures. I do hope the old cars that are not rotted out are getting a sales pitch for Fluid Film!
So the lessons for today is fluid film your car don’t be bothering Eric about fixing your ride unless you break down near his shop. And South Main Auto was my first subscription on RU-vid the longest channel. I think I have been watching since Eric did the shorts I think it was for Dorman.
@@STree42 I would not say hostile. He has a business and cannot fix every problem especially someone who drives 8 hours to get work done and expects it to be done in a few hours. With parts shortages and customers who don’t see the reality in this. I can’t blame him.
Eric, I love this channel! As someone that has worked on cars for over 50 years now, you see things that are crazy to deal with. It’s hard work in New York State to work on cars. At least your channel show the good and the bad for this area. One thing people should do is find a good local shop and learn about what they can do. I’m not trying to take any work from you, but people need to find their shop and support them. I’ll admit, some of the shops in the Rochester NY area are not the best. Some of the Dealerships are not either. But here again, find out about the shop or dealership and when you find one, SUPPORT them.
The shop I was at here in the New Orleans area went up to $150/hr from $130/hr after the family owned chain was bought out by a corporate chain based out of the SW. It was all downhill from there. Spent some time in the rust belt with my 01 olds silhouette. Roads on the area were maintained, so once a snow event was done, they stayed clear. Washed underneath, and have 0 rust. I’ll also be going powerstop this next brake job. The acdelco rotors I put on around 50k ago are already junk. (How many of these do you see with 270k mikes?) 🤣
Eric, just want to thank you for mentioning Powerstop brakes...I just looked them up for my car on Amazon and the price for front and rear complete replacement rotors, drums, etc. was about 1/4 of what I paid to have a garage do the front rotors and pads about six months ago. Next time I need brakes done, I'm doing it myself with Powerstop. Thanks again.
That's good to know about the Power Stop rotors and pads. I just picked up some for my Camry. I was in Florida and they charge $145.00 per hr. Here in Maryland they charge $125.00.
I would say it's none of their business. Every shop is different depending on their location. Being a retired mechanic myself I need to say that you do your diagnosis very well. I like your style. Keep up the great work.
Eric at $90 an hour with his skill set is very fair.... Aside from that America is still SOL. Hope the fall of Babylon isn't to hard on him and his family. Trouble is coming Christ Jesus is our only hope, everything you know is very temporary.
That $90 per hour may be high for your area, but for your level of knowledge that's an absolute steal!!!!! I'd pay that all day everyday if I was closer. 8:00
Eric what causes my rust free '06 HO V8 quad cab Laramie Dodge Dakota , start perfect, then drive 3-4 blocks from home, and it just dies!!! No restart either. 4 tows in an 11 day period. Im at my witts end. I really love my full time 4x4. Since I bought it from Chevy dealer, I have replaced radiator, trans cooler lines, Serpentine belt , tensioner , alternator, water pump, fan clutch and battery. Up on the rack this frame /undercarriage are clean. Im a decent home mechanic. Help!! Chris B. Northern Wisconsin.
Northeast NJ. Your comments on pricing is very much appreciated. I hear these now and then and helps me get very "general" idea of pricing in my area. Better than being paranoid, haha. For doubters, you could say what your shop rental, if renting, is. Besides the high cost of environmental rules about used oil and such. Wish I could drag my old cars to your shop.
What people might know is the cost of doing business with our over head and equipment updating ,people need to know we warranty our work , for a defective part
Dealers in my area are double or more in labor versus local family owned shops. No matter what you need to do your research on who you trust to do the work or you will get taken for a ride.
I missed the live chat. I love these what's up Wednesday! I didn't know it was going to happen? I had a 2001 ford escape water pump job I was working on and I just finished at 10:30 pm so I might not have been able to watch anyways, I guess I could of streamed it to my TV in my garage and watched it while I was working.
That coffee mug is awesome! That's how I feel most of the time. My youngest son got me a new hat for Christmas that says "It's what I do. I fix stuff and I know things". ;)
Thanks for the rust preventatives update. And for the low down on the scrapers. Integrity-you refuse to sell out your integrity-I knew that from the first video I saw. Rockin' SMA colors with the hoodie now. And hey-probably you're experiencing some depression over being stuck with the Dewalt while your Snap-on is out of service. That's understandable.
My Dad was an aircraft mechanic over in Eklkland PA for many years. He always had a ton of work but always said he didn't know if it was because he was good or because he was cheap.
PRNY is not the only loonie jurisdiction. In the PRMD many counties require the carwash recycle the wash water. Add salt to water and you now have salt water. Soooo, our cars get washed with salt water! Love what you do for all of us. Peace.
I've used power stop brakes for about 5 years now on various cars and trucks and SUVs. I've had great experiences with their pads and rotors. I usually try to get their rotors that are geomet coated because I live in the Midwest where everything rusts. I've had good luck with them as far as corrosion protection goes. I got a set on a Cadillac that are going 3 years strong if that gives you any idea albeit the car is driven little but the rotors dont rust while its been sitting.
Prices are between you and the customer. Most people don't understand overhead. Running a business is very expensive not to mention equipment costs and depreciation, computers and software etc.
I know I've commented before that my shop is in Cape May NJ, big tourist destination, so I feel you about out of town work! Many times people rent cars to go home and then come back to retrieve the car I fixed I try to get it done while they're still here but if the part isn't available, you can only do so much.Alot depends on the way they act, if I get a bad vibe or they're too pushy I decline. I have a bunch of transients that schedule work with me while here on vacation every year. Part failure warranty is on them, up front. I usually use Naper or Advancer and with my work order can get warranty part in their area. Hasn't really been an issue. One main rule I have is no camping in my office, go away please and I will fix your car😂
I have had the issue so many times in aviation. "You cannot fix what you cannot find". It is the nature of this business. In aviation I remember we used a product called LPS3 for medium term corrosion control. Brown thick liquid you can bottle spray or brush and it dries to a thick waxy coating. It will wash off to some degree under high pressure water jet. Can get in bulk lots but not sure how the cost works out these days.
Power stop brakes are worth it. I've been impressed with the life of mine. Only problem i had was on the drums, had to have them turned straight out of the box because they wasn't perfectly round.
Screw folks who don't understand small business and how you must price your work to make a living. They have no concept of small business or running their own shop.
Try advance max brakes outta Canada. I installed several sets of powerstops for customers, and everyone had uneven pad wear 1/4 difference between inner and outer pad on every set installed including my own truck. Mileage was ok but uneven wear with free moving slides n guides was bothersome since it was ever set i replaced. Love the vids keep it up!
Dood, it's fu... frigid in TN. We get that Yankee weather, a real deep freeze for about 2 weeks--oh a couple times per decade on average. It's been a minute. 50's next week.
As a guitar tech, I don't advertise or discuss fees, unless it is a very straightforward job. No o that knows my work asks how much for such n such. It's more like the Snap on truck.... If you gota ask... You can't afford it!
Younger people around me think Buffalo is suffering from climate change. Lol. I lived west of Toronto. Got our 1st tv in early 50s. Three channels from Buffalo. Every winter back then Buffalo was repeatedly buried in snow.
My brother plows in RI. Never brings his truck inside before washing them after plowing. The heat accelerates the process. The 34 degrees is the worst, wet, slushy, slurry that gets in everywhere. He fluid films, truck look like new. Wool wax distributor is in Fall River Mass. I want to use their Hard Cote product on an 06 truck frame for a truck I'm rebuilding after original frame rotted out. Upstate NY rust is like nothing else, but RI isn't too far behind with ocean air all year. I laugh at guys from out West not understanding how things get so rotten.
Hi Eric, About your policy for the work on out of town and youtubers cars. I think it's pointless to give up on your earnings and the desires of potential customers for your quality of work. All of your customers are grow up people and you shall trat them as so. They can make a decisions that they would stick with as it should be done by adults. Make some strict rules of the workshop for customers that are traveling above an hour drive and make them refer to the terms and conditions. The simple premise of the regulations could be that the car must be delivered to a workshop and every aspect of it when the customer is distant.
Thank you Eric 😊 For sharing your talents, quick wit and Overall Great Character Think I heard you mention some FB groups for mechanics? Long ago I was in IATN and enjoyed that. Just know You’re Appreciated Brother.
Eric, if everyone was as logical as you, the USA would be an amazing country. I say Eric for president! You reasoning on costs and long distance repairs is absolutely logical. Your an engineer dude and you don't even realize it. Love the channel
Hello independent Tesla mechanic from Armstrong Iowa. Im digging deep in the secret world of Tesla. Bringing dead tesla high voltage batteries back to life. Enjoy your channel for years
Just for information, I have a 2008 Kia Sportage and have been having problems with the ESC/ABS systems for the last several years. Took it to the local dealer for recalls twice for the ESC controller and both times it has ended up worse than it was before I went in for the recall. Both times the system kept engaging and applied momentary pulsing brakes to the left front (passengers side) and right rear (drivers side) brakes to the point where the car was undriveable and the rotors would become cherry red. After replacing the pads and rotors twice and scouring the internet for any means to disable the ESC system, I finally found one reference to holding the ESC on/off button down for three to four seconds after starting the car. Apparently this disables both the ESC and ABS systems from actuating. At least now I can drive the vehicle the three to four miles I need to go to the grocery store or my local pub without problems. Still I do not trust this bypass to work for any longer trips like going 4 or 5 hundred miles to visit my family in College Station. I have to impose on my oldest son for those trips during the holidays/birthdays, etc.
Some people need to learn that the 'labour charge' covers everything. Premises + costs, tools, staff, subscriptions, etc., and a wage for your living costs. Jeeez. 😮
I will have too see if power stop makes pads and rotors for my 2015 Mercedes S550. I recently had to pay $2000 to replace front and rear brakes just for the parts.
I am willing to pay for work I think is superior on my vehicles. After watching your videos I checked into under body sprays. The guy that did my ceramic coating is doing Woolwax. He says Fluid Film does wick better.
People don’t understand how much it costs to run a shop payroll insurance etc.. never mind the fact that this industry is not for no dummies. When it comes to diagnosing. They are paying for time and knowledge/ accurate information on what’s wrong with their vehicle. People who know their stuff and spent thousands on tools and training should be payed very well. These cars these days are rolling computers.
If they want to know how much it costs for the job tell them to take it to the dealer Eric, and have them ask them how much it will be. Your slinging good honest deals sir, keep up the good work
Been using Napa premium pads and rotors and I have noticed the rotors warp really fast. 10k miles and the truck pulses already. Gonna try the powerstops next time.
Dogs are pack animals and I always keep my pair together. Solo dogs tend to have issues, especially if they have no cat/horse/human or anything to "be in a pack" with.
I don't face the rust you do there, but I've been using fluid film on the rotor/hub interface and battery terminals. Enjoy the videos, and keep it going!
hey how are you? I get the power stop pads and the cross drill slotted rotators from summit racing. they carry alot not just performance parts but they do carry some nice upgrades no modifying at all which is nice for stock car.
2018 f150 with 120k on the clock. Warps rotors in the rear like crazy. Front pads are original with the full 120k on them and the dealer tells me nothing is wrong.
