In a world where science is getting dangerously close in allowing people to play the role of natural selection, this three-part series will address why Down syndrome is vital in enriching our society… now and in the future.
In the first episode we go to America to meet Stephanie Thompson, the head of the National Down Syndrome Adoption Network who finds families desperate to give babies with Down syndrome a home. We also look at her personal experience in having a son with Down syndrome, who’s been in care for the last decade.
We also meet a woman on a quest to have an embryo with Down syndrome implanted in the hope of giving birth and raising it as her own. If successful, it would be a world-first.

Most parents don't have the financial resources to pay for the care that Stephanie and John can afford. It's easy to lazily judge a person who knows they cannot cope with raising a DS child, but very few of the people judging the people who have abortions or give the child up for adoption are doing the work to make life easier for people with disabilities and their families.

I think what Stephanie, the director, does for families expecting a baby with Down syndrome is absolutely wonderful. She meets people at their darkest moments and gives them love and support. She is taking her past experiences and trying to help others.

I can completely understand loving a baby despite being born with Down Syndrome. But to choose to implant a genetically damaged embryo with the hopes of having a child with the diagnosis is not right to me and unfair to that child. You are not guaranteed that your child will be healthy along with their diagnosis; what about the high likelihood of congenital heart problems with babies who are born with DS? A baby could need heart surgery before they're even one year old. And what if the child is like the director's of the agency and incredibly violent, making it impossible to maintain a fulfilling relationship with their child? Seems like the woman who is trying to have her child with DS needs to seek help before implanting that embryo. She's dealt with some incredible emotional trauma that may make this sound logical in her mind, but it just is not. It's unsafe and unethical. I really hope she does some internal searching before making this decision.

Yeah, something just didn't sit right about that woman. I am an adoptive mom, one with special medical needs, and I am in complete and utter love with them all equally. But the point is that I accepted each of them as they were; I didn't seek to create them in some image of how I wanted them. It seems that she has some sort of idealized image of a DS child that she wants to have realized, which I think is just as bad as rejecting a child who isn't healthy. Either way, you're making a value judgment about what type of people you deem worthy of life and love.

This illustrates the side of DS that rarely gets talked about. People only want to talk about how much joy their DS child gives them, how they raise their spirits because they are always "so happy and loving and sweet and like angels/gifts from God," etc., etc. But that is not reality. While many normal children without special needs have behavioral problems (about one in ten, according to one study), kids with DS and behavioral problems run about one in three. They tend to be very sensitive to the feelings of those around them and can be set off easily if someone is sad, tense, anxious. They can also be overly sensitive to changes in strict routines. They are easily upset and frustrated when they can't understand or can't express their fears or frustrations. Their outbursts can be violent as they can't understand social norms of appropriate behavior, and as they get older and bigger, they are very hard to physically restrain. This is the side of DS that people don't want to talk about and can be a shock to people who have only heard the one side of this condition but then see the reality.

I found this information very enlightening. It helps me to understand why people are nervous or scared or disappointed when their child is diagnosed with Down Syndrome. I respect all the parents and caregivers that work with people with Downs and other disabilities. They experience heaven and hell, that is for sure.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ my aunty was born in 1953 with Down syndrome. She contracted Polio at 18 months and spent her entire childhood locked away in a hospital. She was so institutionalized at age 18 she continued to live in a residential program. Over time she was able to come for holidays, over nights, short vacations. She lost her hearing but did so well with sign language. She truly loved her house mates and caregivers. I was born in 1970 and she was the joy of my childhood. Even when I was a young adult, she would pull me on her lap and hold me, rock me, and sing baby baby... Her sister devoted her life to healthcare and fights for the rights and benefits of the disabled and when my aunts went to live her senior years with her sister, surrounded by those who loved her, her life was complete. She gave so much to this world and saw things in a way we can not comprehend. What she overcame despite it all her life mattered. If she were born today in 2017 I know she would have accomplished so much more. Please don't see Down's syndrome as a defect.

I have a disability and I never want to bring a child into the world with a disability I know that might sound mean but it dose not. My disability will be pass down if I have a child so that is why at my age and I am 36 I don't have any children because of that reason.

My mum worked in a secondary school specialised for people with DS. I grew up knowing them and they are honestly so caring and kind hearted. Sadly, my mum died when i was 10 but im following in her footsteps and decided to work in schools specialised for people with DS. I've nearly finished my first year of college (:

So a woman condoning the implantation of a Down syndrome embryo is the same woman who has a son living in an institution with severe behavioural issues? I don't get it. I know DS people are lovely and I don't agree with abortion but some have very severe issues so I don't understand why someone would purposely implant that embryo.

perhaps you missed the part where she explains that her son is only 1 of 6 people in the entire world that have his unique combinations of diagnoses. She seems to work very hard and passionately for ALL children with Down Syndrome and yet has to live with the pain of her son's extraordinary disability. I don't see why you have a problem with that...

+Bob Renner so almost 20% of people born with DS will have severe issues like the woman's son in this video? that is still a pretty high probability. i applaud anybody who decides to follow through with their pregnancy after finding out that their baby has DS, however to purposefully implant an embryo with DS seems like a very selfish act.

This is quite a disturbing programme to watch. I was expecting it to be about children with DS, but actually it's about adults with parenting issues. I just hope the needs of the children don't come second to the neediness of the adults involved or who want to be involved.

I believe they’re kids just like any others. But I have seen what they are capable of if they’re raised with love and if learning is promoted. I‘ve seen people with Down Syndrome that live on their own, that have kids, that have a high school diploma, that are athletes, that have gone to college, that have taken on incredible challenges.

@@queenbuzybee4074 yes, because there 3 types of DS but you can never know in advance which type your baby will have. The softest version of DS is the Mosaïque and indeed, it seems they are ok despite their disabilities. But the full version of DS is really heavy do deal with physical and mental health wise.

Shannon Smith soooooo....someone gets pregnant and decides to will the child to be special needs? You've obviously never been pregnant bc you have no idea how pregnancy works...achild is a child is a child...no matter what health issues. A conception is never a mistake...its a beautiful thing that there are people out there that want to give these children loving homes and if I can ever afford to adopt I'd love to adopt a downs child. I am a mother of two and do actually have a special needs child - not something picked up on ultrasound but life changing all the same. Please tell me how i have no idea how pregnancy works??

This video is very disturbing, this woman talking about down syndrom embryo transfer on purpose is more about herself than the baby. I am watching a woman not so balanced psychologically, even if she seems very articulated, who seems to seek recognition more for being the mother of a down syndrom child. Mentally dependant? I don’t know, but she definitely refuses to aknowledge pain and sickness and suffer of this child with disability. I am stunt by her selfish behaviour, just tell it like it is, even if i believe she’s convince to do right and very sincere. But she is part of those who dangerously allowed people to play the role of natural selection. Above everything let’s not forget that illness and disability always belongs with severe pains, do we need to see our love ones to suffer to be validated and beloved?!!

Oh Karen, let me set you straight. It's not that one can't handle her son. Every situation is unique and it's very easy to judge from the outside. Have you ever been almost knocked out by one of your children? 99.99 % of what she does is help find a loving home for children who need one. The amazing part of this whole thing is that there are people willing to open their home so a child with Down Syndrome can have a better life. She connects the two and changes so many lives for the better. That is her part in this. How many lives can you say you have changed in a positive way?

I think you're also missing the part where she got therapists and exhausted all their resources. They did everything any parent could possibly do. Everything doesn't always turn out perfect whether they have down syndrome or not. Of course she has a lot to offer other parents adopting a child with down syndrome.

Iam with Karen on this one.She has her own adult DS son in an Institution, but is still spreading the word for people to adopt Down syndrome children. So I'm guessing adult Down syndrome people have to wear adult diapers and be fed by hand. And let's not leave out violent outbursts whether in public or at home. Yeah let's go sign up people for that.

@@frankiekohl1593 There is little evidence to support severe psychotic disturbance and aggressive behaviours being common in the Down's syndrome population. Having DS offers challenges with potty training, but it doesn't guarantee the need for adults diapers. They also don't need to be fed. Some people with DS are able to have a job. I feel like you're making a lot of assumptions without knowledge.

You can. Go look up the channel "This gathered nest" their most recent adoption was twins who were adopted as embryos. However I don't think it's fair that this woman is purposely trying to bring a DS child into the world. That is selfish.

Yes, one can "adopt" an embryo. When a couple goes through IVF, there is no control over how many eggs the woman will produce, how many mature eggs will be retrived in surgery, how many eggs will fertilize in the lab, or how many of those embryos will survive to transfer or cryopreservation 5 days later. Some couples end up with a lot; example- my husband and I had 11. When the couple has grown their family as much as they want, they can let another couple adopt their "extra" frozen embryos. You need to understand many couples who go through IVF never get any embryos out of it. My SIL just did her first IVF and had 23 eggs, but only 5 fertilized even though they did ICSI on all of them. I know another couple who went through 7 rounds of IVF with no embryos at all. It's so uncontrollable. So, if couple A has more embryos than they can parent and couple B can't produce any embryos, couple A can let couple B adopt their extra embryos. Embryo adoption has no guarantees. It could very well end in miscarriage. But it's a good option for couples who want the full parenthood experience including pregnancy. Not everyone is cut out for adopting a baby or an older child. Adoption certainly fills the void of empty arms, but it doesn't fill the experiences of pregnancy or childbirth. It's a natural, biological want. Some people want to be a child's parents for that child's entire life.

I think it's important to remember that they were in the adoption process for years, and the families that initially picked them decided to keep their babies. So the couple DID choose existing children (those still in the womb, yes, but still existing). Going through that process and being turned down over and over is heart-wrenching.

I found this video a little strange and it left me with a very odd feeling inside. I don't know how to explain it. The title was the thing that rose interest but it really had nothing to do with what we actually saw. I have to agree with some others who gave made the comment about Megan wanting to implant a DS embryo into her womb. This to me is a selfish thing to do. We do not know what the child will be like when they arrive. Isn't Megan risking serious health issues by doing this. No child should ever come to this earth with a job to do. And l feel that Megan is doing this by implanting. A child should come as a gift with a blank slate ready to enjoy life not as a 'plaything' for the parents selfish wants. There are many other disturbing things in this video however l shall leave those untouched for now. The producers of this video really need to review this video and try and see what we the audience are seeing.

It is not true that a lot of people with DS are living out in the community on their own or with minimal help! They all need some type of support from minimal or full time. They are all mentally and or physically impaired in some way and to choose to inflict that life onto another human because of your own selfish desire is wrong. Go and adopt a child who already exists with DS or with any of the other disabilities that already exist.

Her son's behaviors sound so much like my nephew who has low functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder. I'd be willing to be that he has a comorbid Autism/DS diagnosis. I hope she often hears that she was and is a good mom. It's a difficult path to travel and I'm sure her son knows she is a good mom!!!

this is certainly a dilemma, i am pro-life in any situation but i feel that it's very strange for the woman in this video to actually want to bring a DS child into this world by implanting an embryo in her womb. i don't see that as God's calling but her wanting to adopt DS babies, that is perfectly admirable! so she had some failed attempts at that.. but there are plenty more babies with DS to choose from bc most people do not want to adopt children with special needs. i feel sorry for the couple that has the 25 year old in an institute , it's taken such a toll on them. my prayers go out to them . i don't think people should abort DS children but i'll admit it can be very hard to care for some of them. but then again it's sometimes very hard or almost impossible to care for regular kids without disabilities for different reasons. i think children are conceived and born for a purpose that's bigger than anyone here on Earth and it's not up to us to decide to end their lives.

Adopting a child with DS is great I wish more people could or would. However, someone purposely bring a child into the world with DS is absolutely selfish. To force that life upon an innocent child is pathetic. It's likely they only want to do it for the novelty of it, to say they have a child with DS. If any one with DS was ask the question " if we could take your Downs away would you" and they understood that question, they would say yes. All I'm saying is if it happens natural, then it was in God's will and was ment to be. Oh, and I can't believe she said "I have hope that there will be children with DS in the future" just unbelievable. God help us all!

Have you ever known a person with DS? They're often the sweetest, most joyful people you could hope to meet. They don't see anything wrong with the way they were made. With good parenting and therapies, they can live pretty normal live, go to college, have jobs, etc.

It is up to all of us to accept those with differences and everyone deserves love and support. Just remember you yourself or your future children could end up with special needs requiring to be cared for. If you see yourself as being “better” than those with disabilities then you need to spend time in a special school. You’d soon change your mind.

D Sanchez I agree that aborting a child because it has Down syndrome is wrong. That's my belief. But to purposefully bring one into the world knowing that it has a minimum of a 40% chance of having heart malformations, along with all kinds of other physical and mental disabilities, I don't get it. It seems really irresponsible. If you have one naturally, wonderful. But to bring one to life on purpose? I don't know.

it just erked me when around 9;47 she started comparing a potentially life threatening syndrome ie down syndrome because of the possible heart complications associated with it etc to a hair color!!? and how we need people in wheelchairs? i personally don't need nor want to be in a wheelchair lol i think it's flat out child abuse sick really to purposely bring any child with a potentially severe disability into the world not because of the child but because of the world we live in and when the loving parents etc are gone other relatives or social programs are left to care for the person and it's not fair on both sides it's sad - adult quadriplegic with a neuromuscular condition

To me this was a wonderful video, it stayed on track of down syndrome. It showed all aspects of having a child with down syndrome, even showing what parents go through as well, which is very rare to see what all they deal with etc. I can't help but wonder how many people have been and will be helped by these parents being real about how it affects even them. They did include their son in this video as well and his daily struggles. They didn't pretend to paint a perfect picture, but instead chose to show us real issues, and I am sure this was not easy for them to have done, yet they have swallowed pride, (which many of us cannot even ourselves do) and showed us reality. May God bless this family and heal their hurts and pains.

So many of these comments break my heart. I would not be a mom today if it weren't for Stephanie and the NDSAN. I know Down Syndrome sounds scary to so many people but it's not. Things are so different now. Individuals with DS can have jobs, live on their own, and truly make an impact in their community. I highly encourage you to watch Born This Way on A&E so you can see the lives of a few young adults with DS and the lives they live. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I wish there was more understanding and acceptance from others. People are breaking all kinds of barriers in the DS community and there is more and more inclusion than there used to be. When I started my journey to be a mom 8 years ago I didn't expect this to be the path to motherhood, but when I look into my daughter's big, blue eyes I see a perfect little girl and have so much love for her. And my daughter has had some of the health issues but is perfectly healthy at 7 months old. She had a major heart issue and requires heart surgery at 10 weeks old, yes it was scary, but her heart is fine now. Hannah will be able to do all of the things everyone else does, especially as she grows, we just may have to take the scenic route but boy is it beautiful.

+Andrew Smith What country are you in? Here, many people who have DS live independently or semi-independently (In their own apt with staff in the building, thus providing jobs for others!) and work. I supported 2 ppl with DS at work. Another job created by people having DS. More jobs = more taxes being paid. People who have DS are usually more capable than people who have other forms of intellectual disability.

Very few DS people live independently in any country. The large majority are never capable of learning to read or write. It's an extremely severe mental impairment - worse than most forms of mental disability. You supporting DS people at work doesn't mean that a job was created by them - it means that you were burdened with looking after them, when you would otherwise have been doing productive work. The vast majority of DS people don't work - and those who do work do very menial, low-paid jobs and need to be supervised. They cost society millions and contribute virtually nothing. The tiny amount that a small minority pay in tax is dwarfed by the millions that they cost in tax paid by others.

Because very few DS kids attend mainstream schools. Most cannot ever learn to read and write or work. The tiny proportion of DS people who are able to attend mainstream schools and work are the unusally high-functioning ones. Why can't you understand that you haven't come into contact with average DS people, who are severely impaired? Many have to live in instutitions and be watched 24 hours a day because they can't pay bills, run a bank account, cook, shop, have normal conversations etc. Many have to be confined and watched so that they don't attack people. Many of them don't even understand the concept of money, let alone how to count it, save it, budget etc. There are millions of unskilled and semi-skilled people to do all the menial jobs - many of whom are currently unemployed. There is also a constant flow of new immigrants willing to do such work. DS people aren't a necessary part of the workforce and in any case, the vast majority of DS people never work.

i have a son with DS and something happen to him in a program, so he kind act the same way as your son, withdrawn from society he keeps to himself in his room and will socialize with his nephews. and his dogs but only in his home, but Christopher is happy , i know it hard but this not about you, is about your son, show him you love him, life is not perfect, and no one is. seems to me that he needs of showing that he is wanted , but that is for you too figure out, sometimes they cant express how they are feeling and the behaviors will get worst, you dont have ptsd, your son does , you want died early, but your son might, stop this not about you and yours husband, it about yours son, so suck it up and deal with it, no one said life is all about candy canes and unicorns. go see him everyday, show him you be there, if he does want you go home , go back again and again,

There is a wonderful group of professionals that help with communication for people with disabilities. It’s amazing! The name of the group is Apricot Clinic in Tigard Oregon. It is eye-opening and helped me so much teaching students with disabilities including Downs Syndrome.

Amber, over the last 13 years we have tried everything and checked everything we can think of. We have a whole team of experts that we meet with several times a year. We have tested everything and when we hear of a new test or method we try that also. His team is very dedicated to helping him and us as a family. We are lucky to have the resourced we have but they just don't happen, you have to fight and be the bad guy every now and then to get some things done. Thanks for the suggestion.

11:05- it won't be the first time in history a baby with down syndrome is ever implanted into someone. That is ignorance speaking. When a woman goes through IVF, the resulting embryos are not automatically tested. In fact, genetic and chromosomal screening can cost $4,000 - $6,000 per IVF "batch" in addition to the IVF costs (egg retrieval surgery, medications, ultrasounds, bloodwork, etc.). Most insurance companies don't cover IVF and even the ones that do don't cover genetic or chromosomal screening. Some will make exceptions if the couple has previously had an unhealthy child, but most won't. Any untested embryo could very well have DS-- the parents just don't know it yet. No embryo is guaranteed to implant or be born full term, healthy or not. It depends not only on the health of the embryo, but also on the health of the mother. Most doctors will not transfer embryos they know to have genetic or chromosomal problems. They usually don't even give the option to the parents. They just give parents the option to donate them to science or be destroyed. It's true, embryos can be adopted... And I understans why people say, "Well, why not adopt a healthy embryo? Or why not adopt an already-living child?" People need to worry about themselves. Why did you marry that person? Or buy that house? Or take that job? Or give birth instead of adopting? People love to judge what they don't understand or wouldn't do.

Economic class has nothing to do with the mission of NDSAN. I would encourage everyone to use this forum as an opportunity to ask questions and learn, not pass judgment.

I cant be PC about this this is wrong. So many docos spin it like disability is wonderful and yes their are some people that have a happy life with disability but for every 1 person like that their are so many more who wish they didn't have that disability and a lot who wish they had never been born. I've seen people who are bitter and angry at their parents and the world because they will never have what everyone else can have they will never have normal or be able to function on their own. I have no issue with anyone with a disability its my job to care and help those with disability but I've never met anyone like this woman who thinks we need disability and is happy about it. I wish for all the people Ive worked with I could take it away so they could have the life they want I don't wish more people had to go through the struggles that they do. To take an embryo that you already know has a fault and grow it into a person that will have to live with that is wrong, it doesn't matter if its down syndrome or any other fault its still wrong. For the children who get adopted that's wonderful but their are many who don't and get shifted around foster care till they can be put in a care facility. Ive seen the pain the anger and the humiliation ive seen the burn out and guilt from the families ive seen the abandoned and the lonely just as many other people in my line of work have, its not all character building and love. I really hope the doctor and the place that is implanting these embryo's gets shut down.

Everything about this video is disturbing.... from a crazy lady who want to put an embryo with down syndrome in her womb to an adoption adovacate who obviously has problems with her parenting her won child... I would suspect that something happened to her son at 14.... my BIL is handicapped and only freaks out with people who don't understand him. Like a 2 year old does.. and can be violent. She has a husband who is obviously not tolerant of his own son and rather not deal... to the weird letter from a parent putting her child up for adoption... trust me if more people would stand up and raise their own kids instead of being selfish we could adopt the children that really need a good home and orphans... seriously. I just found out my 8th child has DS and I can't even imagine.... it will be hard but anything good in this world isn't easy. This was a very discouraging video.

When people share a tough experience it may not be pleasing to every one but there are others out there watching that will realize they are not alone who are dealing with the same issues no matter how rare. This couples son was put in this home as a last resort and would give anything to be able to see him flourish! I hope you never have a child that had to go through what this young man has endured. After 10 years visiting your son in a facility it "wears you out???". Really? My mother's brother was in a group home or "special home" for 50 years- from the time he was 20 something, until he was 75. All I know is my mother's brother had something happen in his 20's where he could not take care of himself and he had to go to a group home. I never met my mother's family, but did hear of her brother a few times. My other aunt would go visit several times a month and would take him out to lunch. He always had a package with snacks and other things every month.

I don't know how I feel abt this. Yes I think more people need to adopt kids with down syndrome. But to get preg on purpose with a baby with down syndrome seems kinda wrong.
