Take a look at the northern border of the state of Connecticut and you're likely to notice something intriguing. Along the northern border, there is a "notch" that cuts into the state. Why does it exist? What is its function?
Curious about the history, I spoke with two experts on the matter. One from Suffield, CT and the other from Southwick, MA. Both individuals were able to explain the history of the "notch" and its current status.

It happened at the turn of the 20th century. The story I've heard was the criminals would jump across the Mass border because police couldn't follow. Then Connecticut quietly agreed to sell that patch of land to Massachusetts without telling anyone. Allowing police to follow law breakers into what used to be another state. Criminals would literally stop and rest a few feet away from the border after crossing it. Picture the looks on their faces when police just walked right up and arrested them. I'm not 100% sure how true this is. I lived my entire life in the Berkshires and this was the story that many of us were told.

Nice piece. I grew up in Southwick, and was in Boy Scouts with Lee. Great to hear his voice again. When asked where Southwick is, I ww]always say, we are that notch that goes into Connecticut.

Weird. The MA border extending to the water line on the Congamond Lakes reminds me of another weird border law: New Jersey and Delaware. Delaware's legal border extends to the very shore of NJ within the "twelve mile circle"; consequently, land reclaimed from the river line(Finns Point) is legally part of Delaware. There's no homes there or weird tax issues that I'm aware of, though.
