This video shows 3 Milwaukee faulty batteries. I proceeded to dismantle them one by one. I carried out tests and described possible repair solutions. The Milwaukee M18 batteries contain 18650 cells. The newer high output ones contain 21700 cells. The cells are high quality and usually made by samsung or LG.Can I fix a faulty Milwaukee battery M18?
Does jump starting a battery work?
Are M18 Milwaukee batteries any good?
Are M18 Milwaukee batteries bad?
hopefully this video will answer most of the above questions.

Thanks for this. These seem to be the common failure modes and the charger lights often come on green even when the batteries are not working at all!

Great way to salvage older packs only needing a cell or 2. That’s something I’ve always wanted to create is a dewalt 3.5 Ah Powerstack to test against the flex or Milwaukee

It seems a waste to toss a battery that only needs 2 cells. I haven't had a powerstack torn down yet it will be interesting to see if they are serviceable down the road.

I am a plumber Milwaukee batteries are diy standard nowadays... Absolutely crap ... Ive sold most of my Makita tools for next to nothing on ebay an spent over 5 years about £5000 on Milwaukee... In 5 years I had 8 batteries dead 4 fuel grinders,2 fuel drills , 3 multi tools, circular saw , .... I still have some if the old tools , 12 years old makita impact driver is bulet proof changed the bushes 3 times i use it every day for 12 years, have 4 3amp makita batteries same 12 years old , have 4 4amp makita batteries 8 years old, radio, hamer drill, planer jigsaw, lights ,drill, angled drill,... Overal Milwaukee have more pover but design to fail in maximum 3 years, makita last longer but crap on grinder,circularsaw,receip.... Charging wise makita has a fast charger with a fan , Milwaukees fast charger sets on fire its crazy how Milwaukee are still being seen as professional tools they are clearly no good

Thank you for this video. I have a question. I checked the overall output of the battery and it is reading 15.76. So I took it apart and all the individual cells are reading 4.07 or 3.96 except for the 3rd and 4th cell in the pack closer to the front. Those are testing .60 Is it safe to say those cells need to be replaced and that is the problem? Also, the PCB board on the top looks brand new so I am not sure if it is that. My problem with the battery is it is blinking one red light on the battery itself and when I plug it into the charger the light just stays solid green. I would appreciate any help and feedback you can give me. Thanks again. 👍🏼

The cells that are showing nearly zero voltage need to be replaced. The board could be ok but unless you balance the cells the original board won't work. The knock off board will let the battery work with the cells out if balance but cells being as close to equal voltage is recommended.

@@doctorlefthandthread Thank you so much for your help. I already have the two bad cells out and I plan on getting the small spot welder, the two new cells, and some strips of pure nickel so I can fix the battery as soon as possible. 👍🏼

Question for you Dr Lefthand thread. Had a 5.0 m18 with LG HE2 cells. Pulled it apart, 6 good cells and 4 were absolutely junk. 6 were at 3.95v other 4 were .3v. Replaced all cells with new Samsung 25R's. All new batteries were 3.54-3.55. Internal resistance between 12-17 milli ohms. Re assembled pack, had 18.19v from storage voltage. Dropped it on charger solid red for 20-30 minutes, then started alternately flashing red/green. Powered off charger, re set the battery....10-15 minutes solid red. Then the flashing again. Pulled it off and was reading 18.33, started at 18.19....it's not taking a charge. Any ideas??

My guess would be that you need to replace the board as well

Get rid of.the crappy charger and get yourself an adjustable power source. The one I got cost me about 70$ and I can adjust it from 0v to 30v with 10amps of current. I set it to 21v and hook up the alligator clamps to the battery and charge it the dummy way. Get a multi meter to test voltage (fluke 107) if it's below 16v the cells in your battery are junk. You can either solder new ones on or junk it.

@@johndowe7003 you are correct since the creation of this video 5 months ago I have acquired a dc desktop power supply and a better multimeter. Thanks for your advice and comment.

What's going on is the batteries that he's saying are bad cells are only "bad" because they weren't balanced charged correctly by the board and charger. That does indicate a problem but if you check each individual cell and some will have full charge and some have a low charge you can bring those low charge cells back up and individually balance the cells yourself. If the individual cell reads zero and does not take any kind of charge it is bad or if the individual cell has flipped and reverse polarity it is then usually bad as well and cannot be salvaged. That is common in the Black & Decker lithium batteries, the board is so dumb it doesn't balance charge and it allows you to run the battery until some of the cells are completely depleted while other cells still have a bit of a charge. This causes one or two of the cells to reverse polarity and it will act like a connection break in the battery. Anyway, you will want them all to say as close to the same voltage as possible for them to be balanced and work correctly and charge correctly. If you individually charge them and get them all to read close to the same you will then have a working battery but something is or had caused them to go unbalanced and more than likely they will eventually get unbalanced again. Requiring additional work or replacement it could be the cells themselves and that they aren't charging at the same rate or it could be the board not applying the same amount of charge to each group of cells. If a person decides to change out the low cells instead of just charging them up individually, you can still use them in a flashlight since they do still work. I'm trying to figure out why one of my batteries says green on the charger like it has full charge and when tested it in fact does have full charge and balanced even, but when pressing the charge indicator the light blinks or flashes red it supplies no power to the tool. I'm pretty sure it's a faulty board, I'm looking to see if somebody's figured out the repair.

@@SS-zm3vi we've already figured out the repair lol just remove the cells (8200 series cells) and install good ones. Then dummy charge the battery, those Milwaukee chargers are garbage. I check batteries use ng voltage only. 21 full 16 dead
