Great tips for the petunias. I have one that is not looking good right next to the one that looks amazing! I have to take a good look and see what is wrong with it
CUT WORMS!!!! Very discouraging! I resorted to overdosing w powdered SEVIN! It’s terrible but it’s the only thing that works. Thanks for the video! Have a great season!
Cutworms are listed on Sluggo Plus and Captain Jack's Slug and Bug, but sometimes those pests can be particularly defiant. Hopefully, you can keep them at bay!
I had beautiful petunias last summer. Huge flowers and lots of colors. Did have issues with wilt. They were good one day and the next day went whimpy. Did not find any insect infestation They ended up in the trash. 😢😢 Delt with Aphids earlier and Used cold processed Neem oil in the evenings. . Sprayed every leaf and they recovered.
For us, when we see wilt (especially if they go from great to terrible quickly) we check our watering… both too much and too little water can cause petunias to wilt. It can take a little while for the petunias to recover from overwatering.
Thank you. The wilt that I had to deal with required patience. The first time I was ignorant. And frustrated. The second time I was willing to wait it out. It took about two weeks for the pot to recover ai also moved it to a bigger pot. It was really rootbound. They were in full sun, 8 plus hours of hot summer sun. Everything needed to be watered twice a day. But the wilt had to be managed carefully. Reduced the direct sunshine to the Morning sun and moved the wilted tunities to the indirect sun area and watered when dry.
My petunias were looking spectacular until 6 days ago. They have started to kind of like dry up . I still have flowers but some stalks have dried up . I water them everyday. They are placed in a two big pots around my pool. I'm in Houston, TX and we are having temperatures over 95°F. So I wonder if they are just dying from too much heat. I don't think I'm having pets as I treat all my plants with a mixture of Neem Oil and Dish Soap once a week. Hope you can guide me on what to do. If they are just dying on too much heat, how can I at least transplant some to a pot where I can place them under a shade.
Heat and wind can dry out pots much faster than you might expect… especially once they are established and using up more space in the pot. You might need to trim back the plants to encourage new growth from the top. A bit of Sluggo Plus or Captain Jack’s Bug and Slug Killer might catch anything your other treatments might miss… and they’re both certified for organic gardening.
IT IS THE HEAT! 99% of web pages & videos assume you're in Maine, Michigan, or Minnesota. Search around for Texas or the SW & you'll see petunias are planted in autumn. Here in Arizona (Phoenix) a local nursery said not to plant them outside until the temps stay below 100F which is October around here! (Note this is for REAL petunia not fake like Ruella aka Mexican "petunia" which handles heat a lot better)
Oh no! Petunias doesn't need to be watered every day. That could be the problem. They're being overwatered! Petunias only needs to be watered once or twice a week at the most, or whenever the soil feels dry to the touch about 1/4 of an inch deep. Never water petunias every day. Also, petunias are not shade flowers. They're full sun. If you transplant them in the shade, they won't survive.
Question for you - can I grow hydrangeas in a pot? I live in chicago area and don’t have a yard but grow my summer flowering plants in my small patio. Thanks for your help
Yes, you can. It’s a good idea to look for plants that are 3 zones lower than where you live. I’d suggest looking at some if the smaller panicle varieties like Early Evolution, Little Quick Fire, Tiny Quick Fire, Little Lime Punch, or Fire Light Tidbit.
Great video. Thanks so much. I have a question. I live in Southwest Germany and have a North balcony. That means i get morning sunshine from right in the morning, and afternoon sunshine from the left in the afternoon and early evening. The plants are hanging nicely and are out of direct sunlight during late morning and early afternoon hours. The flowers are not that old, but develope a white substance on the green leaves, and thousands of black dots start falling all over the place. This doesn't happen all the time, but too often. What is your advice on what i can do to have beautiful, healthy, petunias? I did not hang any up this year because of this problem. Thanks so much for whatever help you can give.. Happy Easter..!!
I'd recommend snapping a pic and asking at your local garden center. That said, we often see spots on leaves after we water when there isn't enough sun. Once the plant is established, you could try watering from the bottom with a saucer or try using a narrow-spout watering can that get the water to the soil without getting it on the leaves.
Are to careful not to get the leaves wet when you water - the white could be lime or minerals from your water - changing to a watering can with a long narrow spout and only watering below the leaves could help. The black dots could be seeds… petunia seeds are smaller than poppy seeds often stick to the leaves - if you pinch off the flowers (getting the green part just below the flower) just as the flower begins to fade could help.
