If you have watched the CAR WIZARD 🧙‍♂️ for a while, you will see that he finds Toyotas to be very reliable cars. So why is this 2007 Toyota Avalon in his shop? And why does the Wizard still claim it's still one of the best?

I have an 07 Avalon. Almost 300k miles and I plan on getting it to half a million. No major repairs, front bearings and cv axles are the only big repairs I’ve ever had to do. Plan on getting timing chains replaced soon only because of high mileage. Love this car

Does it have the 2GR? Even then I’ve never seen timing chains break/stretch on those motors, usually the timing gears and oil control valves like to give out occasionally. The timing covers have a habit of leaking as well sometimes

The other thing about the Avalon is that the first owners were typically older drivers who babied them and did all the scheduled maintenance on time at the dealer.

I recently bought a 96 Avalon with 210k from a 75 yo man. I was surprised when I removed the valve cover. That's the cleanest 1mz I've ever owned. The only thing I don't like is the fabrics on the sun visors and headliners are bad. They won't hold up in my area.

If you pull a Carfax on some Avalon's you can see them typically falling from 1st or second owners, some dealer maintained. Just do your research, its still possible to find them in great shape. I was going to help a friend buy one, it was probably the cleanest Avalon I seen, was an 06 with the remote start, light blue, barely over 100K, fully loaded, 2 owners, dealer maintained by both, 0 rust, mechanically clean, engine looked great and clean. Suspension was tight, road great for what it was, V6 had more than enough pep, coming from RWD V8's it didn't feel compromised. One of the only cars in the price range with heated AND cooled seats, plus you get dual zone, easy to install an Android auto/Carplay headunit and a backup camera. The only gripe I had was that the seats weren't as comfortable as a true luxury car, they're plush but the lumbar leaves something to be desired for me, basically a Camry's seats. Didn't end up buying it because it was 9K (today's market, geez) and the dealership damaged it after taking the pics and scuffed up the rear bumper real bad, tried to claim there was nothing they could do about it, so it was a pass, but I highly recommend these.

Wizard you are correct. That Toyota (if made in Japan) is worth every penny of cost to purchase. I always bought GM products, I'm 72 years old. 2018 I had a bout with kidney cancer. I needed a car to replace my 2004 Impala. I needed something for my wife that was reliable in the event the cancer put me in the ground. I bought a Lexus ES350, 2015, in 2018. My health is reasonably good after having kidney cancer. But this car will spoil you. I made a correct decision (my first car that was not made in the USA. Quality you can see and feel when you drive it. When American car manufacturers can produce a car with this quality, I will again buy American. Until that happens, I will buy Lexus/Toyota. Very good car but not a perfect car. Mine has had a perfect drivetrain and a quiet, comfortable ride. But on the negative side, the AC is leaking at the evaporator and will cost about $2500 to repair due to the very inaccessible location. Two of the door locks failed but this can be a relatively easy and cheap repair. The rear sunshade mechanism is broken and not worth fixing so I forced it down and pulled the fuse so no one could accidentally get it stuck halfway up. And finally the hands-free phone link and the navigation system are archaic and hard to use and you can't get updated maps. Other than that, it has been great.🙂

👍👍 Two thumbs up. Rocking an 03 Avalon with 153K miles on it. Runs absolutely fine. The leather on the drivers seat and steering wheel is shot but you'll get that when a car is two decades old. Invest in seat covers if you're keeping it that long or using it as a daily. White/beige does stain easy - choose darker or black leather to help hide those marks. A spare carpet floor mat for the drivers side is recommended too because your heel WILL eventually make a hole in the original.

Sometimes I wonder if Americans treat their cars different than Germans. My last high mileage german car was a BMW E34 525i which I sold with 383.000km (238,000 miles). It did not have constant oil or water leaks, misfires or any of the things you mentioned. The Audi TT that you mention quite a lot for being unreliable has made first place in the 2022 TÜV Report in the age bracket 8-9 and 10-11 year old cars for having on average the least amount of defects found during mandatory inspections. Also the ADAC (german equivalent to the AAA) regulary gives top scores in their "Pannenstatistik" (breakdown statistics) for all kinds of BMWs, Mercedes and Audis. We don't have many Toyota models here (no Camrys, no Avalons, no Tacomas ,only the Plugin Version of the Prius etc.) but the models that we do have do not seem significantly more reliable than their German counterparts.

The most reliable car I ever had was a '96 Nissan Patrol 4x4 with the short wheel base and 2,8l turbodiesel. I drove it 350K km (217K miles) and only changed filters and fluids. One small hose on the engine side was replaced, one clutch and one set of brakes. We put 31inch wheels on it and no problem besides having to tighten the wheel bearings on the front a little. Such a great car. It started to be eaten by rust, so I sold it to my neighbour for a little money and 3 years of free snow shoveling. My muscle disease made it too difficult to maintain for me, and we wanted to go electric, but it was hard to see it drive away.

Your freeze plugs are called “welsh plugs” here in Australia
@scootypuffjr.

Yeh, well you drive on the wrong side of the road too😬
@houseofno
@houseofno 2 года назад
They are called freeze plugs because in the event of extreme cold, the expansion of the freezing water causes them to pop out and drain the coolant. It reduces the chance of freezing water cracking your engine block. Welsh plugs say nothing about their function, they are not Welsh in origin, but then again, most of us expect this sort of nonsense from Australia, along with your astronomical car prices, taxes, fees, and now all but nonexistent car industry.
@JohnSmith-yv6eq
@JohnSmith-yv6eq 2 года назад
Welch plugs...... The Welch plug was originally designed in the 1900s at the Welch Motor Car Company in the United States. During the testing of a car, one of the pipe plugs backed out. In order to get back on the road, one of the Welch brothers installed a press-fit quarter or half dollar coin into the hole using a hammer. The design of the Welch plug was refined based on this principle of a press-fit metallic disc.

I had an Avalon and sold it with 256K miles and the guy that bought it shipped it to Camaroon. It was white with a dove grey interior. The only thing I ever did to it had a water pump replaced. Have had 2 Lexus ES350 since then, The last one was sold with 315K miles and the one I drive every day has 266K miles on it and still feels like new. I always regret giving up my old car when I buy a new one. I tried to talk my wife into a high-end Camry and she said it's Lexus or nothing for the next car. I am saving my pennies as the price of a new Lexus ES350 is over the moon. Acceleration is awesome.

Funny thing about this car... I had that same car and year, which WAS always my hero car. And as it was always said, never meet your heroes and that statement became so true and apparent. I understand there is no such thing as a maintenance-free car, but the price to repair/replace parts on the cares surely has come to break my spirits. My Avalon only had about 160-170k miles, but the cost to replace the cats so I could pass the emissions test almost had my jaw breaking when it hit the floor. The time it took to do a tune-up was just purely stupid, with no excuses or BS. Quality struts were beyond reason, and it drove like all other Toyotas- vague steering and absolutely no thrill or excitement. I am a true car enthusiast, and love driving and tinkering- but that car caused me to regret "meeting my hero" as said. I have had better luck & more dependable history with my VW Passat and the best-of-all-time '89 Chevy Cavalier. Do not get me wrong, there was plenty to like about that Avalon, and it may have been better if it had AWD, cause we get snow in WI and that for me and my family is mandatory. There is one thing I will give praise to for the Avalon, which was trade-in value - I got way more than average, but just like a home, there is no value in an item until you go to sell it - as long as you own it, it is your asset/possession that has only personal value only not market value.

Front timing cover, VVT line failures, shot water pumps, and vvt engagement gear failure. My 2008 has been a good car, but I did have to do the water pump and an o2 sensor. If I ever have to do the front timing cover, it's over. You have to drop the front sub frame...

I purchased my 2007 Avalon XLS in 2014 with 50,000 miles. I drive this car everyday. I've replaced an alternator and water pump and that's it. It now has 277,000 miles. I've never done a tune up on this car and still get between 29 and 33 MPG depending on my driving style. I'm by no means easy on a car, and it can still light them up if need be at 35 MPH. The check engine light stays on due to the O2 sensor which is on the back of the motor. Does nothing to effect performance whatsoever. Tire indicator light stays on due to sensors being worn out. With the cost of the replacement sensors I had standard ones installed. I've been driving over 40 years and know how to check air pressures without eating that cost. It's just as smooth and comfortable as the day I purchased it, and I usually drive it at least 200 miles a day. Definitely the most dependable vehicle I've ever purchased and I my buy another car, but will drive this until the wheels fall off. Heck, even the Rear seats recline!! I Love It!!

Wizard, That CV shaft you replaced is around $700 at the dealership and for that reason people go put a cheaper aftermarket option that'll go bad within a year of driving, also don't forget to mention the always leaky power steering system and timing cover oil leak which will happen inevitably that'll require an engine out job to fix it, ask me how I know?!

I am guessing it is a fuel pump problem or fuel inlet screen. No leaks other than having to replace the radiator. Rear rotor dust shield rotted off. I find Corollas more reliable.

Replaced the front valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals since oil was pooling outside of the over and now it's time to do the rear (bank 1). Has anyone had an issue with their Avalon, specifically a 2008 Limited, where the ABS and brake lights are on and engine temp gauge drops to zero, the AC stops blowing cold? Also not getting any communication to the OBD2 port. This problem is intermittent and sometimes none of these symptoms are present at all, and then they all come on at once.

had my mechanic replace the timing chain cover and seals and water pump on my 03 mercury with an 3.0 Vulcan engine because Ford only made so many of them and want to keep driving 🚗 around to on family gatherings but glad I didn't go get it before he was done because after inspection he noticed the repairs was costly the labor just to remove the alternator, Serpentine areas and coolent areas plus the tensioner and other components was more then the parts so I had him also when he told me when he went to do the job he noticed and then told me my bottom oil gasket was bad the oil pan fell off so he had to rebuilding all the gasket seals put new ones in and replaced my oil pan because when he removed the assembly of timing chain cover the oil pan fell off too so he ate the cost of the parts and charged me labor and just for the seals and that's a good mechanic because at the end of the day he saved my family from blowing the engine and by leaving the car in his care he was able to fix it before Friday. got it back this morning was running like a new car again i was wondering why it smells like anti freeze and oil now I know the bottom was leaking both because the antifreeze was spraying on the exhaust manifold and burned off. I'm thankful for your videos and my mechanic being honest because my last one didn't tell me my bottom seals where going out so I took your advice and my friends and switched mechanics. glad I did and glad I found a good one.

Its been pretty easy to work on does have 188k miles on it but its held up pretty well aside from some minor work and some of the neglect. Does have the timing belt and at least at some point has been changed. Couple of leaks and the suspension has issues, passenger cv axle as well. I got it cheap in hopes to fix it up into a daily driver.
