What's Wrong With This 225 Slant Six? Tearing Down And Diagnosing A Noisy 1973 Dart Sport Engine

They say the slant six is one of the toughest and most reliable engines ever built. My experiences with the slant have been a little... different than that. But in general I've had good luck with them on the channel - until this one. This engine would barely stay running, and made what seemed to be horrible mechanical noise. I am installing a Magnum based 408 stroker where this slant used to live under the hood of Dylan's Dart Sport. So this engine is now spare parts, and I really don't need to go any further with it. But I'm curious, so follow along as I dive into this slant six in search of wondrous horrors.

Hi Jamie,I've owned lots of different engines over the years. My best engines that lasted over 300,000 miles were a'69 Dodge 300 4dr crew cab 318 went 345,000 miles. I replaced it with a motor home 440. I rebuilt the 318 and put it into a Dodge Coronet. I've owned several 170 and 225 dodge sixes, never blew one up. I had a dodge A-100 with a 170 and I really enjoyed that pickup. For durability I rate the Dodge slant six, the 318, and the motorhome440 as the best Dodge engines for durability. Now, I'm also have owned a '69 GTX 426 Hemi. My all time favorite hotrod. I rebuilt it when I bought it in '71/ I used a 426 Hemi Bible sent to me by a world famous Mopar icon. That car was a monster performer, I loved it making a sacrifice of it when I was hit hard by the "get married and settle down bug". It paid my way into a new house, and a major Ball &Chain!!!!!!. Meanwhile my work truck my old reliable '69 Dodge 440 powered baby just kept on running! I celebrated shedding the ole ball n chain by giving my truck an excellent B-5 blue paint job with painted on pin striking and my company logo too. I give an honorable mention to GM cars I've owned, the Chevy 6, 283, 327 and 350. No complaints to them great durability. I'm now and always been a Mopar guy. My racing favorite driver icons all drove Chrysler powered monster winning cars. Both drag strip and NASCAR drivers.

Up here under the hat of canadia in good ol Montucky we have lots of ranchers and farmers. Now say what you will about how abusive we are to our vehicles but the maintenance is generally always spot on. Oil changes twice a year, full lube service whether they need it or not, and so on. I inherited my 'first car' from a distant relative who thrashed a 76 adventurer SE longbox in canary yellow/white. That old man logged 680,000 miles on that truck before I got it. 3 transmissions, countless sets of brakes and other consumables, but never had to touch that old 360 once (other than plugs, wires, ie consumables). Turns out that after that many miles and never changing the timing chain is kinda bad for when a teenager gets his hands on it. I proceeded to thrash this thing until I roached 3 holes to the point of no return. I mean 2 had dropped exhaust valves that bashed around and poked holes in the pistons. One intake valve broke off and wedged between the wall and skirt resulting in a two piece connecting rod. BUT the truck still put me down the road another 45000 miles before I got a graduation gift of a 73 charger. I retired the truck to our back field for a couple years only to be revived again down the line when the charger was out of commission and yes it still ran until we decided to make a dumprun trailer with it. (which is when i found all the carnage under the heads).

As a teen in the 80s my best friend got a 73 Dart in great shape but it was knocking. We were stupid kids with no license but we drove it up and down the block mostly floored until it threw a rod out the side of the block behind the water pump. By our surprise it started right back up and drove back to the house with smoke coming out the hole ! lol

I have always liked the Dart especially the 69 era version and the Duster first year's are the best version but just like most 70's cars the dreadful bumpers could use a good dose of Chip Foose to clean up the body lines. Any small Mopar with a small block is one Hell of a fun ride. The only slant six history I've had was a 65 4dr Dart I bought for $75 bucks due to a dead cylinder and found (1) push rod laying to one side. Adjusted all the valves changed all fluids and buffed it out and sold for a $500 profit. 1979 was a big investment year.😊

I ported it myself and has been mailed down 17 thousandths the dex been milled down. 148,000 compression is now 10 to 1 and now sporting a heavily ported exhaust manifold and electronic ignition and an aluminum offenhauser intake manifold four barrel with a 600 CFM Holley lot of fun to drive

Holy cow ive never seen cracked pistons or whacko pins on a slant six! You saved it from being total scrap if those pistons let go. I dont recall seeing main bolts going into a water jacket. Looks better than my 73 dart six we blew up! Got pops camcorder out in 1990 and my bother torched out a hole in the valve cover and torched out half of the valve keeper to get it to drop a valve. No dice. Held it to the floor for 5 minutes and it just floated the valves. Slant sixes have that cool tiny carb and small cam rev limiter! So we had to add paint thinner, brake fluid and palmolive (softens your hands while you blow motors). Five minutes later the engine started to waver and boom. Blew the power steering pump mount right off the block! Rod failure. Rod got jammed between the crank and the block. The engine caught on fire and we had to use a chemical extinguisher. What a mess! Oil all over the driveway. On teardown everything else looked "ok" except for the other 5 rods we all twisted about 45 degrees clockwise. 😀 I have it on vhs. The good ol days👍

Sweet vid! Very informative per usual. Buzzin' Half Dozen's kinda rule IMO!! I'm guessing the bolt sticking out of the crank/ harmonic balancer was put there so that the engine could be turned with a wrench. My '66 Belvedere Wagon came with a seized up slant six - after a jug of Marvel Mystery Oil into the cylinders - I reefed back and forth on this bolt trying to break it free... sadly to no avail. I've sourced/ pulled a good running slant out of a 72 Dart... it needs to be installed. This video just might have been the jump start I needed to get underway on this endeavor!! Thanks for the continued inspiration - appreciate it to the fullest!

If that’s what happened, how could we have no impact marks whatsoever on the cylinder head? I’ve seen what happens when little pieces of valve seat bounce around in a modern Hemi, and it’s very impressive. This is an iron head instead of aluminum, but I still think a chunk of metal jammed into the head and halves by a piston will leave some marks.

Oh yeah… I’ve done my share of slant fuel pumps too. My ‘73 Swinger was running like absolute garbage pulling away from a gas station one day in like 2009. So I pulled over and found the crankcase was massively overfull… turns out when the fuel pump diaphragms start going, they can continue to work well enough to run while pouring fuel into the oil! Cool trick. So I limped it to my mom’s house a few blocks away, got a new one at the parts store, and changed the oil… that contaminated oil/gas is *still* in an enclosed oil drain at her place. That’s my bad.

I've only had one slant six in my life (at least one that I actually drove), so I'm no expert. But when I saw the dings in the one piston, my first thought was "major detonation". Otherwise, my thought was "just drive the absolute crap out of it until it totally disintegrates, and THEN tear it down and see what it looks like. But, 408 stroker will make everything right.

Yeah that thing has seen some stuff. I must have put ten clips on it. It’s my fault for using chrome tools with it and ruining the dingus end. I have been slowly switching to Milwaukee stuff because my Mac Tools rep moved away and we haven’t gotten a new one. But that 3/8” impact is an absolute reigning world champion. The Mac cordless tools are made by DeWalt and use the same batteries, chargers, etc., but come with a three year warranty instead of one. That one has more than outlived its warranty, it’s been dropped, it’s been thrown, it’s been dunked in coolant. Seriously good stuff.

I’m pretty sure most old school mopars including the slant 6 offset the wrist pin toward the thrust side of the piston to reduce noise and piston slap when cold- it’s not a defect, it’s a feature.

I am fully aware of and familiar with piston pin offset. The cast in area that the pin should be centered in is offset. The pin in this piston is drilled way off center of that hole, such that the offset appears to be much more - on one side only.

My second car was a new, 1973 Duster with the slant six. I subsequently owned several more cars with slant sixes, but I was never happy with fuel mileage. Unlike you and most rebuilders here, I do not want more performance that costs more money (higher fuel consumption). I want more performance AND more economy. My current car is a 2017 Pacifica which get much better fuel economy. My dream would be to put the whole power train of a Pacifica or similar into a Duster.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 3 месяца назад
I guess you haven’t seen a lot of my videos then. Lol. I am a big proponent of mostly stock engines and usable torque for the street. I’m not a big horsepower guy, and have never dyno’d an engine I have built. I’m all about home grown performance, and not spending a fortune on go fast parts. I may be one of very few RU-vidrs you will find that has been involved in a fuel economy oriented classic build or two. I’m also one of few people who will tell you that modern drivetrain in a classic like this is a mistake - and not because I hate or fear modern stuff. The exorbitant cost alone far outweighs any savings from fuel economy gains you will see, unless you drive this car thousands and thousands and thousands of miles. That may be your goal in such a build, and that’s great - but then you come up against another issue, which is the reliability of the electrical system and the fuel system used to make the conversion. And the difference between a slant six and your Pacifica engine is that the slant six doesn’t need a space station’s worth of electronic controls to run. In fifty years, which of these engines will still run and be reliable? My money is *not* on the Pacifica. My brother has documented thousands of miles in multiple V8 powered A-bodies, logging fuel economy in the low 20s MPG range. You might beat that with a modern drivetrain swap - but at what cost? In my book, these cars are best enjoyed in a mostly stock or period correct state. They are simple, reliable, easily diagnosed when things go wrong, and lots of fun - even the slow ones. That’s my take on this anyway. It’s only based on sixteen years of experience with these cars in every flavor there is - from stock slant sizes to modern Hemi swaps, I’ve tested these theories a lot.

Not to pile on, but I remember a video from Onelonelyfarmer talking about buying a godzilla powered F250 vs. the diesel-powered F250. He said that when you compare the price difference between the packages, you can buy a lot of gasoline. In his mind, the gasoline powered package is overall more economical despite getting worse fuel mileage. The same can be said for weird drive train swaps. You can buy a lot of gasoline for the money spent on the swap, even an aftermarket overdrive transmission behind a factory engine.

That engine definitely has some anomalies, I would definitely want an answer to coolant on top of the main cap bolt. Do you think the block might have been machined on the eve of some major labor action? And the piston damage, the cylinder ingested something small that wasn’t edible. The piston pins? Somewhere there’s a long retired UAW worker laughing to himself.
@rustandmagic

That slant was fine, just an oil change to flush out the biggest chunks and it would be good to go, by the way the Lancer 61 has a much nicer dash, rear lights and grille compared to the 62
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 3 месяца назад
Oh I’m sure you’re right. Haha. Some smoke and blowby is certainly within factory specifications. I know - the early dash is really cool. But it wasn’t exactly up to use what car was donated.
@timmcooper294
@timmcooper294 3 месяца назад
Detonation damage! #2 probably started passing some oil, which lowers the octane value of the charge and that cylinder started detonating/rattling, which pitted and cracked the piston eventually. This can also beat the rod so badly that the cap can get spread / loose.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 3 месяца назад
Well there we go. I have heard that oil consumption can lead to pre ignition. So I guess the question is what was the original sin - how did the oil end up in there? Obviously we can see the terrible ring seal now, but was that before or after the piston cracked?
@timmcooper294
@timmcooper294 3 месяца назад
@@DeadDodgeGarage Hard to say for sure, but I bet here was a "smaller" problem than the crack, that began a domino effect. I have had many engines that got tired and burned oil start detonating really bad under load. The pitting on the piston crown is detonation for sure, and the way the crack and rings look my guess is they are also detonation damage. I had one tired engine detonate so bad it eventually holed a piston.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 3 месяца назад
@@timmcooper294 I’ve heard it can get to that point. Cool! This makes good sense to me. The last engine I took apart with obvious detonation damage had it in 3 holes I believe. Just thought it was interesting to see in only one, and to that extent.

Block have a Maltese cross or other stamping marks? Was hoping you flipped a bearing shell out and checked the size/date on them. Vacuum leak and detonation on that pitted piston perhaps.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 3 месяца назад
You know, I’m well versed with those stampings on big blocks, but I’m almost ashamed to admit I don’t know where they would be on the slant. And I seriously don’t know why I didn’t go looking for markings on a bearing and show that - as I have in my recent Hemi teardowns. I was definitely in a hurry at the end of filming the video. That’s unfortunate.

I also have killed a slant six. Criminal neglect on my part. Allegedly. I've seen carb parts get sucked into a cylinder. Chewed the piston in a way much different than those.
@DeadDodgeGarage

“Allegedly” Yep… I allegedly fed a slant six half a can of ether to get it started after sitting for years as a teenager, and found out what the inside of the block looks like. I wish I still had the chunk that came flying out.

Of course the toughest engine ever conceived can be blown up - the "hold my beer" crowd can tear hell out of any engine, especially if they don't care or are intentionally destroying shiyat.... The fact remains that the vaunted /6 is acknowledged to be the most durable engine of all time. I've read an old SAE paper that even compared it to sort of a perpetual motion machine; the design is for it to have next to no parasitic friction loss. - Ed on the Ridge

That cracked piston was probably really close to being a grenade in the engine and taking out the rest of the engine. I'd bet the piston dimple over the crack is from erosion once the crack went into the ring area. The block looks salvageable though. Folks who don't know about the slant 6 and think the design is wierd think nothing of a V8 which is 2 slant 4s melded together. Same for the V6 being 2 slant 3's.
@rennkafer13
@rennkafer13 3 месяца назад
I'm right there with you on the erosion once it cracked and let combustion gas through. That could also be the source of the noise, combustion gas expanding into the crankcase.

Interesting failure mode. I guess even a manufacturing defect can't kill a /6 . Well it can it just takes 50 years to show up? Do these things run on magic and pixie dust? Like you said that is not my experience either. One thought on the electric choke heater. It's so the choke opens too early and the car dies in the middle of a busy intersection before it completely warms up.
