Quarantines means more posts and skate nerd stuff. Talking about kickflips yet again today - mostly my tips on the most common problems you might face.
also keep in mind that even when you master any trick there will be some days where the universe plots againts you and you will not be able to even ollie. so if you learn to kickflip and the next day you get confused for not being able to land it again, or the next week you just momentaneously forgot it, just keep in mind it will keep happening a lot.
lol reminds me of my first fs heel. wasnt able to land it with my back foot for about 1 hour then i gave up. THE NEXT DAY i got it first try. like... wtf.
I hope this tip helps anybody…try more to position your weight over the back truck Really take the back seat on the board and imo, it’s easier to flip and pop
I feel like keeping your shoulders straight with the board can help with committing to tricks. I've taught a few people how to kickflip and I noticed that when they land with only their back foot, their shoulders are turned. It especially affects me. I just recently spent a month learning a new flatground trick and I noticed that one of my biggest problems was that my shoulders were turned, and it was a lot easier to stick the trick when I had them straight. I'm sure it's common knowledge to most skaters to keep your shoulders straight, but in case it isn't to a few people, there's another tip for ya.
Doctor Skipwith YESSS BRO! when learning to committing to my shuv it only landing w/ my front foot my shoulder were turned and my back foot was on the ground still.
To anyone who struggles landing it : *Remember ! Landing on the board upside down is still better than not landing at all* . Cuz like whenever you land on the board upside down u're starting to build up slowly the confidence in yourself to land on the top side of the board by time. This little mentality tip helped me land kickflips and heelflips. Keep in mind it's just a personal suggestion so I understand if someone has another kind of method for all these tricks.
@@hawkwind769 So far, alright. Not very consistent but got 2 down in the dirt. Need to practice more on the landing. Soon enough I'll begin doing them while rolling.
@@a_lame_person_ the sooner you can put them on the street the better. I know it's tough just roll slowly. And (I obviously don't know where to are with it) but really jump! Once you get the timing of the Ollie down of course... My problem is in not jumping high enough and catch it upside down.
If you're struggling with keeping your front foot on the board, check out his right arm (left of screen) at 4:20 during the flips where his front foot stays off, to his good flips (like at 2:40). You'll see the right (back) arm comes around in front again during and after kicking, to help counteract the left leg. In the 'bad' flips, his back arm stays out behind him. People rarely talk about arms and upper body enough in skating but it's super important to help balance the motions of your legs. But I can't kickflip either yet so what do I know lol.
I've been doing kickflips for over 15 years and I have to say they are the hardest easy trick. I'm always working on them and I'm not sure I'll ever be satisfied with them but I love them. It's a strange thing. I'd like to see a break down like this for front side flips. I'm going to be out doing nothing but flat ground for the next however long. Front side flips are my next trick to fully unlock.
Hey bro. I'm about a month in front of you. Just getting back into skating. And I'm 40. I just want flip tricks consistently. I've always had kickflips good, and I agree with your statement about them. Always working on them. I couldn't land a frontside flip on flat back 15 years ago. I've recently got them. It's all about slanting your front foot (flick foot) a little more than a kickflip. Your back foot being on the edge of the board, like toes over the side of your tail, almost grabbing the tail like a monkey, like you do with the 360 flip, but other way obviously. Open your shoulders early. Make sure your front 180 is really good. Try and land on your nose at first. All in that order. Think, slant foot, grip side of tail with toes, push out and away with that foot, but at same time open your shoulders and turn em. Land on your nose at first
@@brettdonahue876 cant wait to try that later thnx man im gonna be on my 5th day of skating after 1 1/2yrs of recovering from ACL Reconstruction surgery..dont mix alcohol and xanax ppl. And if you do, warm up before you rush a set of stairs ! Btw my first day back i was insanely rusty couldnt even ride my board lmao
@@erikschreiber4671 most skaters aren't satisfied with their tricks. We are but we aren't type thing. Love hate relationship man. Always stoked to skate though
I've gotta say, you and VLSkate are the only two skateboard content creators that I enjoy watching. You aren't pretentious and you lay things out in a calm, logical way that really speaks to me. Keep it up, man. Thanks for the work.
I've been through every single problem. I've flicked my board out. I've landed only front foot. I've landed only back foot. I've underflipped. Now I'm so so close and I'm mostly underflipping. And when it's not an underflip it's Landing with one foot and not the other but the other foot is super close to the board. Idk what to do man. I've tried everything. So frustrating.
Keep trying and it will eventually come. Took me forever, every time i felt like i figured something out something else would seem to go wrong. Eventually it just started working and now i can land some pretty good feeling ones.
Focus on those half flips / upside down landings. Forget about the full rotation for now, but focus a _lot_ on jumping up and retracting the legs _after_ your flick. Make sure your back foot has like 70% of the weight, making the front truck almost comes into the air right before you pop and flick and then tug in your legs and crouch in the air. Look at where you want to land. Focus on half flips and staying above the board. I bet you are like me, landing front foot only generally means the back foot was on the ground pretty much the entire time. And if landing the back foot, chances are high you're flicking down (even though you know this is wrong, after all, you're probably flicking up when landing front foot only). I think the main problem is how to shift weight and balance the moves. I also noticed my front foot needs to remain high with the back foot jumping up in the air to catch up. At that point the back foot should also be able to catch the board after the rotation, but I myself am working on half flips first now too.
@@PHeMoX why has nobody emphasized your first statement??!?!?!!!? Retract legs AFTER flick 🔥 that was such a good way to put that thank you. In my mind I would say pop and flick for timing, now imma add “pull” to pull knees up after clixj
I'm suffering from the "friction effect" that you spoke about, haven't heard anyone name it or speak about it in any other kick flip tutorials. Thanks for the tip, it's gonna give me something to work on.
When I started I shined myself 5 times in the same spot and I had to wait 3 days to go at it again and that's now... I shined my self again in the SAME SPOT.
You know what's crazy, when attempting a varial kickflip I got no problems trying to land back on the board. But when trying a regular kickflip my front foot is depending on my back foot being on the ground to get back on. It's so weird. I am going to try half kick flips now, but it's tough.
PHeMoX I learned varial flips first too and surprisingly a lot of people do, possibly because it’s like landing a shuv. But it’s a step in the right direction for sure, try flipping more diagonally and maybe at first try landing with the board upside down
For me, I believe kickflips are harder than varial flips. I think it's because kickflips require more flexible ankle flicking, whereas varial flips require more of a rigid ankle when flicking. Like I can switch and nollie varial flip, but come no where close to switch or nollie flips. Hell my switch Ollie and nollie are also both awful, for me, it's because my left ankle (my switch flicking foot) is far more rigid. The bending of the ankle is crucial for Ollies and kickflips.
@@jeeneeraykreenaldeen7979 Yeah not only that, I think a varial kick flip kind of requires only a three-quarter flick and three-quarter (or less) scoop to get both the kick flip part and shove it part going. The hard part about the varial kickflip for me now, and the reason why I haven't landed it cleanly, is the tendency to shoot out quite a bit (toe side). For me it is also easier to do both a scoop and flick at the same time whilst jumping forward for a landing. A kick flip requires me to jump up more and keep my front foot especially longer in the air than during a pop shove it, or indeed a varial kick flip (mostly because I'm also focusing on jumping forward pop shove it way). I might have to agree a varial kickflip might come easier to some people. Even though a proper varial kickflip will depend a _lot_ on how well you manage to keep a pop shove it under you (scooping back and nose side more than just backwards scoop).
I am always getting so mad because i want to learn kickflips and i end up doing varials all the time and I can’t stop it, maybe its better that i learn varials then :/
It’s so aggravating because I can’t never land my front foot, the front foot always hits the ground before the board and my flick is perfect I just can’t seem to comprehend bringing my front foot up after flipping
This is so true. These little gotchas pop to my mind every now and then, and I try to remember them all. I swear I have like seven different puzzle pieces I'm thinking about while trying a kickflip. I again landed one today, but boy was it a struggle...
My God, I'm 35, been skating again for 6 weeks after 20 years hiatus, and finally working on kikflips is the worst thing that's ever happened to my shins. I feel like Steve-O in the skateboard guillotine
Moving my front foot up closer to the front bolts before popping and flicking helped me tremendously with my kickflips. I can now do them almost every try. Your kickflips are flawless, by the way.
These type of videos breaking down the elements of the trick are great. I learned to kickflip when I was young, and I do them well enough but now that I'm older I'm trying to learn to skate switch, and a lot of this "too much friction" stuff is leading me to make errors that I haven't made for years skating regular, and haven't really thought about. Thanks for the vid.
I am having to start by slowly putting my front foot back on the board a little at a time and once I get my toes back on the front of the board my confidence rises and I feel I have to do this every time I start a session lol I’m getting used to landing them slowly thanks for the videos man stay safe and cheers from San Francisco
My kick flips go behind me and I’ve been trying to find a video that helps me. Can you make a video or something? ( I can’t land kick flips sometimes but they always go behind me and I’ve been trying for a year)
Kickflips are one of those tricks that make since as soon as you land your first even if you don't land the next 100. If you can flip it but can't land it. Jump higher and commit more. Good luck to all of you and hope you're all doing well in these times.
Not landing with your foot/feet on the board is a combination of not pulling your knees up high enough and rotating your upper body away from the board. You have to keep your shoulders/weight aligned over the board so your feet will land on the deck.
I started skating like 6-7 years ago and I learned pretty much a bunch of stuff like 360flips, kickflip gap and 4/5 stairs and so on. For some reason our group broke up and i didnt continue skating, now i wanna start again amd this is happening: I CANT KICKFLIP, NOT EVEN CLOSE. i think like my body completely forgot the movement and I really suck. Same goes for heelflip ad every other flip trick. Anyway im quite consistent on shoveit tricks after some practice.. what do I need to do in order to improvd my flip tricks? Thanks
massimo russo same shit happened to me, feels like it takes longer to Relearn a trick, but I’m using this time to get them all really clean and nice looking
Solid video. Appreciate it Sir. I just landed heelflila on a bank now I have to get them flat. It only took me 43 years😂. Then the kickflip battle will begin.
When I put my front foot under the bolts for a kickflip the tail of the board wont touch the ground for pop. But when my foot is in the middle for the board I can flick a triple kickflip (of course not landed)
I have been practicing my kickflip for the past 8 days and i land probably 6 - 7 a day yesterday i landed 4 in a row but not rolling i want to do rolling kickflips but its hard to commit sometimes stationary i cant commit
Love the part of this video where you mention development of bad habits. Changing the way you practice from just flipping the trick to actually landing it. Committing to it. That reminder to just give it 100% goes a long way, and I’m going to use that mindset from here on out!
I NEED HELP I’ve watched so many tutorials and videos and have gotten tips from even people in real life and I STILL flick down I can flick up and out without the jump and pop but when I do the actual trick my foot goes completely down and when I do flick out my rotation is way to slow just please help 😔 ☹️
in all the how to videos i have never heard anyone talking about the way you have to jump in order to catch the board. what i mean is when your flips are not linear if you know what i mean like not perfect forward flips that stay straight under you, you will need to jump back little bit to still be over the board in case its not perfectly placed. makes sense ? its just one of my issues im learning to adjust to.
you have to orient your shoulders along with the board and make sure that your weight is centered in the center. otherwise theyre gonna go ahead/behind you because you'll be jumping backwards/forwards instead of jumping up
I had the opposite problem when learning - could flip it perfectly and land with my front foot everytime - but my backfoot - got in the habit of shooting it straight to the ground instead of lifting it up above the board....no matter how hard I tried to get that back foot up, it would go straight to the ground...muscle memory can be a bitch...took me the longest time retraining and just focusing on my backfoot just to be able to get my back foot up over the board...would just practice hours on end, eating away all my shoes....slowly, very slowly, I was able to get it above the board and finally land one....but man it really was a journey...
If you come across this video and see this comment just know the most important part of a kickflip is shifting your weight backwards . This is something literally no one talks about and is the single most important this about the trick. All you hear if "Flick at the top of the board" or " stay over your board".
I have this strange problem, I land them fine but when I watch them back it’s like they’re perfect with a backfooot catch and everything but my front foot stays in the air and doesn’t make contact back with the board until it’s hit the ground. I really want to be able to get both feet to make contact with the board before landing on the ground because it causes issues when I’m trying to Kickflip off big stuff, I just can’t control the Kickflip as good because I can’t get my front foot back on the board before I land so they always look kind strange off stuff.
yo, can you do a video about different set ups? Like what do you ride and why (shape, concave, wheelbase..). If there is any preference you have or a difference in riding different boards
watched this vid went outside and landed a perfect kickflip i always got disgusted when I saw low kickflips and I finally landed a high one I'm happy :) I subscribed
Hi I got super good at kickflip but one day it changed I lost em not like completely but I just can’t do it down stuff and it’s not clean and I even flicked super fast Any tips guys? Much appreciated
when i kickflip i have this one little hole in the front of my shoe on the topside cuz that’s where im actually flicking the board and i wanna kickflip regularly so how do i fix that
Either get shoes with toe caps, like the Vans 112 Pros or do the upwards flick of your toes a little bit earlier / faster I suppose. Not so sure if it can truly be avoided in terms of damage. Sooner or later, it'll wear.
Hey I have the issue where I can’t get the other foot on the board it feels like I don’t have enough air time but reviewing my videos I’m not raising my knees enough to get my foot around I think it’s a fitness issue of some kind perhaps reflex because I’m 32 because my flips are super consistent
I know this video is older, but my thing is, I can only land it when the boards upside down, both feet almost every time, AND NO MATTER WHAT I DO, i cant seem to get the board to go to a full spin, and the times that I do land it fully, I primo and slip back because i just barely under rotated, any tips?
Issues I had learning was leaning more back on the tail side my right foot. Cause I was scared I was going to credit card my self. Then I made my self start leaning more on my left side. Plus it was lot more comfortable if I was rolling after three pushes. The movement helped kept me more on my left side
I've skated for 10 plus years and always did kickflips with a slight flickout down to the side and always held me back from doing flips into grinds only was able to do kickflip 5-0 5050 and noseslides but mainly 5-0 being the easiest because it would rocket into it and it always steered me away from doing flips into grinds. But switch flip is proper af and looks like yours. I'm goofy stanced and noticed my left leg when I flick for switch flips feels nice and loose but my right leg for goofy stance when trying to flick out the way you do feels so uncomfortable. Breaking the habit of doing the kickflip the way I've always done it is so freaking hard. For more understanding it's pretty much how Jeff dechesare does his kickflips
Thank you dude I have trouble with my k.f n it's always the most beautiful k.f but I always just put my back foot on catching it I just gotta realize play times over n I'm ready to start landing them! Thank you
My problem is that whenever I try to do a kickflip I accidentally do a pop shuv, or occasionally a varial when i do get the flick right, but no matter what o try or how my feet are positioned I can't stop the board from spinning 180 degrees
The problem I’m having is my board turning slightly backside whenever I try to pop a high kickflip. I noticed in my own footage that my front shoulder dips inward and down every time I flick. I see in this video his front shoulder is doing the exact opposite. He’s forcing his front shoulder to stay in that same position and ignoring the urge to turn your body to get a better flick and flip. Even looks like he’s throwing his front shoulder towards his heelside if anything! I’m gonna try to correct this next chance I have to skate.
It sucks for me.. i can land treflips, varial flips and even kickflip body varial but damn i always have bad times landing a normal kickflip... i dont know 🤦🏻♂️
Two things for me. I tend to turn backside? And the most frustrating is I have these Rollie tail kick flips if that makes sense. I can get over two decks(I’m pumped I’ve been skating for a few months) but knowing I can get over two decks, but then I have this banana lookin kick flip. HAHA.
I have a very strange problem with my kickflips: when I try to land it, my board turns to the side at the same time as my body, like a kickflip fs 180, and I land it at a ninety degree angle. How can I make it land forward on the same line? I hope I have explained myself well. Sorry for my english, I’m not north american
Very frustrated with this trick no one's giving me any good advice every time I've asked for help. This video helped me a good bit I'm getting the board to flip now I'll keep trying .🤙
Havent skated in about 14 years. Bought my kids and myself all skateboards to teach em. Only landed 2 kickflips the whole time. The friction effect got me
