I'm a native speaker who prides myself on my use of the English language. I scored a 9/10 on the C2 section of the test, I failed the last question. I felt that C. "I can afford it." was a better answer to the question "How can you get by on that salary?" That response would indicate, at least to me, someone who is working a job that pays poorly but has some other means of financial security so they don't need to search for a better-paying job. "I need to job hunt" implicitly indicates that the individual in question CANNOT "get by on that salary".

Same here. I'm a native (American) English speaker so I was wondering if the difference was British vs. American, but it seems like the question implies that the asker isn't sure if the other person could afford to live on their salary or not. If they can afford it with their salary, then C is correct. If not, then B would be correct.
@apetass123
@apetass123 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, I think they messed that one up. If the reply were, "I can't; I need to job hunt", it would've made sense. But on the positive side, if I can join native speakers in criticising the C2 part, I guess I passed lol.

@@apetass123 Yeah if that was the option then the answer would make sense, but as it currently is it seemed weird to me. But if you're noticing the same thing then your English level is excellent!

I'm not native speaker, but I understand this question this way: HOW can you get by on THAT salary? a) I can get it (it's hard but I manage), b) I need to job hunt (I can't, but I don't worry you about my problems), c) I can affod it ( yeeaah, I have low expectations so I'm ok)

Yes, it is. But the worst is the pronunciation. By a landslide. Especially for us french. I am always puzzled by native english speakers who say that the french language is so difficult in comparison to english. That's just wrong. My guess is that since language learning is not mandatory in most english speaking countries, english speakers never learn to learn, and hence, naturally suck at it.
@jakke1975
@jakke1975 2 месяца назад
If you think English is difficult ... try Dutch. To me it comes naturally but I've heard people cuss on it more than once ;) But yeah, the internet is full of examples of all the things that don't make any sense but to people who speak English already. Practically speaking, it's not that bad though. Exposure to a language is the most important thing for people to learn and that is where English excels. Turn on the internet, TV, radio, ... English is everywhere and it's easy to practice it as well. It's a language with comfortable sounds that sit well with most people so I wouldn't really call it "complicated".

This comparison with "the hardest language to learn" sucks. Polish was your MOTHER tongue, which means you were in a total immersion and learned language intuitively - which is not the case with other languages.
@duzzzz94
@duzzzz94 22 дня назад
@@meinungabundance7696 Agreed. I think the difficulty comes from how similar the language you try to learn is compared to the language you know. I am native Finnish speaker and because my language is quite different to germanic languages I have struggled with learning a lot. They say learning Finnish is difficult and I can see that, the grammar is not intuitive if your background is not in Finno-Ugric languages. Funny enough, my most common mistake when speaking English is using wrong personal pronoun. Finnish doesn't use gendered pronouns, we use the same for everyone.

It's MUCH worse today, clearly, just looking at the comments sections in 90% of internet web pages. When I was a freshman in a small university in 1977, it had gotten bad enough that for the first time, there was a mandatory writing screening test -- to force deficient writers into a remedial English / writing class, for those who would clearly struggle badly in ordinary freshman English, which was mandatory. I can only imagine how MASSIVELY the proportion of college students badly needing such remedial training having ballooned massively in the intervening 46 plus years. I often wonder if American K-12 education even includes writing, much less grading actual papers AT ALL, given the lack of awareness of English vocabulary, grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and on and on.

I am a little confused by c2 q10. considering Can=Present, Could=Past, The wording of the question/answer confuses me a little. If we are considering Can as being a present tense of the word, How is it that the 3rd answer is not also correct? How can you afford it (assumption being How can you currently/presently afford it) , Would not the answer, I CAN afford it (assumption being Currently/presently afford it as an affirmation that the salary is not a problem.) not also work here? I guess I am confused here due to the lack of context/perception of the q/a. I probably wouldn't have asked the question in the way it was here. I would have said something like, Are you able to afford the salary? Then the need to job hunt would be a better fit because the question provides a clearer intent in my mind. Maybe I am Just weird. But its the only question i missed sadly :(

At first, I also jumped to the conclusion of "reads", but after thinking about it, it does make sense... I've heard it before in phrases of movies or serials. The suggest part seems to indicate that the action should be finished - hence "read" = finished reading the whole book.

A greeting would go in the front of a sentence for an introduction instead of putting it at the end; the way you worded your sentence was like saying hello and thanks, which would be interpreted as hi and bye together. Common wording would start with saying hi (name) or hello because the word "greetings" is outdated, and for saying goodbye, it would just be "thanks" or "thank you".

10th in C2 is just completely wrong. The entire sentence lacks any context whatsoever, and "I can afford it" literally can fit, like; "How do you get by on that salary?" - "Well, I can afford doing that", as in, I can get by just fine on that salary. It makes sense gramatically, no? I got 8/10 bc of it; got real stupid on 4th question bcuz im a dyslexic moron, but 10th is just wrong and the correct answer makes NO sense to me and not how any english person would speak. It's just that I don't know better and don't get it. It's in question n1 on C2 level: What answer cannot replace Suddenly? I think the correct answer is: Out of nowhere instead of "All at once". I understand their meanings are very close and both could almost be exchangeable but, to me there's a nuance that makes the whole difference between them. I'd really appreciate your feedback. Thanks a mil.
@melanp4698
@melanp4698 Год назад
Out of nowhere is by far the best replacement of suddenly out of those 3 choices. I find that question a little "hmh" though because according to the dictionary, they're all synonyms for suddenly, so i would actually consider that answer wrong. There is an implied meaning to "all" though, meaning more than 1. You dont say "all" about 1 cat, so "all at once" sounds wrong even though it is technically correct. In this sentence however, it would make much more sense: "All at once, fifteen cats appeared." Edit: Thought it said your comment was 1 day old lol, but better late than never i guess :)
