“What’s Your Story?”
Starring Rachel Bloom
Written by Rachel Bloom and Adam Schlesinger
Rebecca:
STORY STORY
WHAT’S YOUR STORY?
STORY STORY
WHAT’S YOUR CRIME?
WHAT GOT YOU HERE?
RAGE, LUST, OR FEAR?
WE ALL GOT A STORY ‘CAUSE
WE’RE DOING TIME!
RA TA TA
RA TA TA
RA TA TA
Jessie:
Um. Ok, fine. My boyfriend had meth in the glove compartment of our car and I got pulled over for something else and a cop found it.
Rebecca:
Ooh! Well, did you dump that good-for-nothing drug planting boyfriend!
Jessie:
No, we’re still together. I love him.
Rebecca:
Well, did you at least tell the cops that it was HIS meth?
Jessie:
I mean, I could have turned him in, but my boyfriend and I have a son. I can’t risk our child having both parents in jail.
Rebecca:
STORY STORY
LET’S HEAR ANOTHER STORY
STORY STORY
THAT ONE WAS JUST SAD
WHAT DOES YOUR STORY SAY
ABOUT THE PATRIARCHAY!
WE HAVE ALL GOT STORIES ‘CAUSE
WE DID BAD!
RA TA TA
RA TA TA
RA TA TA
Hanifa:
Okay! I stole a sweater from the mall.
Rebecca:
Ooh! Had you been stealing all your life?! Was this the culmination of a life of kleptomania? Or were you doing it to stick it to the problematic fashion industry?
Hanifa:
...No, the heat went out in my apartment and I couldn’t afford a sweater, so I stole one.
Inmate:
Oh my god, I stole a sweater too! I got two months, how long are you in for?
Hanifa:
Three years.
Inmate:
I’m so sorry...
Rebecca:
STORY STORY
THESE ARE BARELY STORIES
THEY’RE JUST BLEAK ANECDOTES
WITH NO START OR END!
Rebecca:
Go, tell your story, tell your story.
Cybil:
Sure, I have a story. I’m in here for murder.
Rebecca:
Ooh! Murder! Juicy! Ra-ta-ta…
Cybil:
While I was driving, my daughter texted me that she was in the hospital and I got so distracted that I hit a teenager who was crossing the street and he died.
Rebecca:
STORY STORY
OH MY GOD WITH THAT STORY
STORY STORY
TAKE AWAY HER CHAIR!
Inmate:
I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry…
Rebecca:
Okay, you know what, I’m just gonna share my story, because you guys aren’t really versed with a sense of story structure, so I’m gonna show you how it’s done.
I was a no-good, manipulative love addict with undiagnosed borderline personality disorder. I swindled! DRUM! I cheated! DRUM! I put out a hit on my ex-boyfriend’s girlfriend! DRUM DRUM! Then, one day, this guy Trent came into my life. He was ironically just like me. And he tried to kill the man I love, so I pushed him off a building! And then, when I plead guilty just for like, metaphorical symbolism, the judge knew I was innocent so she didn’t accept my plea but I wanted to go to jail anyway.
Jessie:
Wait, what?
Cybil:
You don’t HAVE to be here?
Jasmine:
You CHOSE to be here?
Rebecca:
Yeah!!
RA-TA-TA
RA-TA-TA
RA-TA-TA...

I really like this song because of how awkward, sad, and unhinged it is. Crime and jail aren't glamorous or fair like in the movies. Also loving the ugly underwear-over-prison-clothes and Rebecca's maniacal "ra-ta-ta." She's obviously not ok...

The ironic thing is, I think you could do a very powerful piece of theatre with these kinds of stories if the prisoners wanted to tell them, but Rebecca's so invested in the Cell Block Tango and her own narrative she doesn't see it.

Honestly I kind of like it because it's not a great song. No one is participating and to me it's making the point that Rebecca is mentally not in a good place, and that jail doesn't exist to play into her fantasy world. It's the first song that makes you see Rebecca at her low point. If everyone was singing and going along it just wouldn't feel as powerful story wise that she is in prison (By her choice, not by the judges)

The way I see this is that yeah, she's even turned the depressing reality of prison for these women into a self indulgent, "it's all about me" narrative, and that as well as punishing herself by being there she's also sort of loving it: ugh, she's just the absolute worst.
@elsieandrews5070

Yes but the show has a guaranteed happy ending even if bittersweet and it's beyond unrealistic to suggest a woman with BPD in her position would leave prison anything but far worse off than she came in. I don't know what the writers were smoking.

I really like this song. It talks about how many people in jail are there for crimes that aren't so glamorous as media and such often paints it to be. Instead of romanticising prison they draw attention to difficult aspects people chose to ignore when talking about criminals. I really like the costume choice in this as well. Instead of super sexy costumes they're just prison uniforms underneath some crappy underwear.

I love the Chicago vibes, but you can clearly see how Rebecca is not in a good place at all when it comes to her mental health, she is over-excited over the song and really is the only one partecipating, and the song is not even good, it's a desperate attempt to romanticise this mess she is in.

Ok so I just rewatched the episode from S1 where Rebecca follows Josh to that camp for at-risk youth, and Rebecca's cell mate in this episode is one of the teen girls from the camp episode (her name is Nicky, she and Rebecca team up for elbow tag). I double-checked IMDB, and it's the same actress/character. It's like another subtle nod to the problem with the judicial system in the US, this time on the school-to-prison pipeline, as the character couldn't be more than 18 or 19. I love CXG so much.

everybody has stories, and the majority of them need to be told. Just not always in the way you want them to be told - the real gift of a storyteller is to be able to know how to tell the story and what genre it is (in this case romanticised fiction vs realistic tellings). Rebecca clearly appreciates the appeal of stories, but she has no idea about what an appropriate genre is.

This is where I hated Rebecca the most. Despite her obvious privileges, she is still trying to make this all about her and not empathizing the bare minimum with the other women and their heartbreaking stories, just because they don't fit her dramatic theatrical narrative... And she choosed to be there, you know what a slap in the face that is for the others? They don't have time for this bullshit

In her trying to own up to her privilege she still shows it by being there when she didn't have to be.

The fact that some people are saying racial discrimination in the justice system doesn’t exist when people have been commenting on it for decades (with this as an example) is so stupid.

Depends on the value of the goods stolen. If it's over several hundred dollars, the charges are upgraded to commercial burglary which becomes a felony rather than a misdemeanor. Also depends on the nature of the criminal act: if a prosecutor can convince a judge that the defendant had a plan to go into the store to steal the sweater, then that will really maximize the severity of the crime leading to a longer sentence. BUT If the defendant has a capable attorney (And this ties into race, wealth, and privelege) who can pursuade a judge that his/her client is not a CAREER CRIMINAL, and that they were just shopping at the store as usual, then suddenly had an impulse to steal the sweater .... then their sentence would be greatly reduced, maybe even get no jail time.
