Dr Loh discusses the use of salt in a freshwater pond and aquarium. We describe which salts are safe to use, when and how to use salt to treat freshwater fishes* (*read note below).
*IMPORTANT NOTE: some aquatic species are very sensitive to salt and can be harmed or even killed by the use of salt, so you must always research the specific species you are keeping before you decide to add salt in your aquatic system.

Many many thanks to you Dr. Loh. I did both baths today. The epsom as a laxative for a male koi betta that seemed bloated with either constipation or other digestive issue. And I did the salt bath several hours later for him and a female double tail as a preventative. The male koi had some scale damage when I bought him but the pet store did not truthfully disclose or perhaps did not know. Either way they are both fine and he seems much better now. Thank you Dr.!

I had a great idea for a educational video. A video about aquatic disease and how to counter them. I know what your thinking, there’s a bunch o theses videos on RU-vid. But there isn’t any good ones that go into detail with pictures of different bacterial infections, how to identify them and which meds work for each different infection . And the same for parasites in our aquarium. With pictures of different parasites and ways to combat them. I believe that this would be a good video and or talk to present. There are far to many aquarists out there losing pets simply because they don’t know how to identify the difference between parasitic and bacterial infections and have no clue what to do with either problem. Heck you could make a 3 or more part series out of it. Bacterial, Parasitic, and Viral infections. Just an idea and I thought you would be a awesome person to make it ✌️

How about something better then a video for fish diseases. How about a Wiki website where everyone can edit and upload their pictures under a type of Diease then add their experience on how they cured their fish or not. I was thinking of starting a website like that. I am a web designer so it would be easy for me to create. The only thing is it will be time consuming to manage it. I would have to have a bunch of fish expert admins to help.

Good one. Yes, the sodium in salt competitively inhibits nitrite uptake by the gills, hence reduces toxicity of nitrite - in fact, it's very rare for marine fish living in saltwater to get nitrite toxicity!

I appreciated the explanation and have always wondered on when and how much to use. I will have to re-calculate for amount per gallon but I can figure that out. The problem that I see with using Salt Baths is that the stress of trying to catch the fish and put them into the bath and then returning them to the aquarium can likely be much more stressful for the fish than for the benefits of the salt bath itself. Most of the time, the fish don't wish to be caught and with the type of fish that I have, they would rather jump out of the tank long before jumping into a net. However, I am thinking that if the fish were first put into a quarantine tank, perhaps that would make it all easier. Again, however, that's added stress. Thanks for the explanation too of the types of salts NOT to use. That's good to know. I am subscribed and look forward to the next video presentation. -- Michael

If it reassures you, we've been using the two basic sea salt baths as described here for probably close to two years now, and it's made a helpful difference far more often than not. It's simple, affordable, safe and effective for so many different aquarium organisms; we've successfully treated freshwater crayfish, freshwater shrimp, gudgeons and guppies multiple times. On the very few occasions that the animal didn't recover, we generally weren't really expecting them to make it through anyway, but it was still good to be able to at least ease their passings. We always check the salt-tolerance of the animal before we use a salt bath, and are very careful about accurately measuring the salt, water, and times. We also check water parameters and look over the tank and the animal itself to try and work out what's causing any problems that may be needing treatment. Hope this is helpful for you :)

@yourstruly2983
@yourstruly2983 2 года назад
@@joemail1527 Hi, hope I can help. My understanding is that 'rock' salt (salt mined from dry land rock) is more likely to contain undesirable mineral traces than 'sea' salt (salt harvested from the sea by letting water evaporate so the salt is left behind dry). These are both kinds of salt you can find in everyday grocery stores, along with 'table' salt (which usually contains a small amount of an additional substance to help keep each grain separate & prevent the salt from clumping together into a solid block). These 3 salts are all mostly made up of the same basic substance (Sodium chloride) and they're all the sort of salt that we humans eat. Are you familiar with pink Himalayan rock salt, or maybe salt lamps? That's a kind of rock salt that contains tiny amounts of trace minerals which cause its distinctive pink colouration. It's a naturally occurring pigmentation of the salt which exists as literal rocks in the ground, and is an interesting example of a visible trace element in a rock salt. I can't recall whether or not this video was the source of my information, but somewhere along the way I read that table salt with an added anti-caking agent, or rock salt with trace minerals from the ground aren't ideal for freshwater aquariums fish. I really hope this helps, I feel like I might not be explaining things well enough.

@falsealaska
@falsealaska 4 года назад
Different brands of salt have different size granules so measuring them by volume instead of weight is inaccurate (e.g. Larger granules will have more air between them meaning you can fit less in a teaspoon than smaller granules which will have less air between them) . You can get a cheap digital scale very cheaply from most supermarkets or dollar shops. That said though, the margin of error and difference in results will be quite small, so long as it's not a large aquarium which requires a large amount.

It has bloated slowly over several months, i originally thought it was eggs until the scales started to pinecone. I do not believe the problem is anything other than bad genetics because it's a comet based on none of the other fish being affected for several months. But I want to relieve the bloating with salt. Getting water from the wild (especially when other fish live in there) is an unnecessary risk because especially parasitic desease are common in the wild. If the issue is caused by ammonia, you could just change the water more often and add life plants or use remineralised destilled or ro water if the tap water is polluted.

Thanks Richmond that was very accurate and helpful. I notice in China they just throw large hand-fulls of sea salt into goldfish containers and pots, this is quite random as is the amount. It doesn't seem to be doing any harm. Im wondering if this saline water is what goldfish like to live in. For a series of interconnecting tanks I saw one guy put a whole shovel of salt in. The fish in the dispersal tank didn't look at all upset with the mountain of salt in their aquarium. It was crystal sea salt so it took quite a long time to dissolve and spread to the other tanks. I bought a sack of sea salt from him and do the same. After water changes and heavy rain I just throw in a few hand-dfulls here and there.

Thanks very much for your reply and time Doctor Richmond! Can you tell me how much salt approx in Kgs I will need for an 86 723 L pond. I worked it out at 433Kgs of salt which is an awful lot of salt! For general maintenance can I use less. Our water PH is exactly 6 as it comes straight from a clear mountain stream. Do you know how much Calcium carbonate I should add to make it harder and should I use magnesium as well? Or does sea salt take care of both o them? I know they prefer the water slightly harder as this also reduces stress and opportunistic infections and over time organ disease or collapse. They are very healthy at the moment but the vagaries of the weather can shift the balance of phytoplankton and zooplankton in an instant leading to the odd monumental disaster. How does salt affect both the phyto and zooplankton, do they adjust?

I have questions : 1. Is aquarium salt really needed even if my fish is fine? 2. How much aquarium salt should you put in a 7.5 gallon cube tank? btw: I have a betta
@pancudowny
@pancudowny 5 лет назад
1. It's not necessary... but it does help. 2. Calculate 1-tbsp/5-gal. In your case, that'll be 1-1/2tbsp. Since Bettas are somewhat delicate, the more you can do to provide a non-stressful environment the better. Just remember: Gentle currents, a soft place to lay upon for resting (leaves somewhere above the tank floor) and a nice blanket of bubbles on the surface for spawning. Also, avoid heaters rated below 50-watts, and ones rated at 50-watts offered by Tetra aquarium products. Neither can perform reliably, for some reason.

Hi Dr. Loh, I treated a flowerhorn (my first time keeping them) for constipation in a 30 minute epson salt bath, as per your recommendations. After the bath the fish's kok lost its red color. Is this normal? The color has not yet returned (treated 2 weeks ago). Many thanks. Alan

It might be useful to bear in mind that sea salt is not pure sodium chloride. It contains cations such as calcium, magnesium and boron, as well as anions such as bicarbonate. Whilst these extraneous ions (with exceptions such as iodide) are not in themselves considered harmful to fishes, and for the purposes proposed here, their presence should not affect either the calculations of the concentration nor the mode of action of a salt bath. However, due to 21st-century disposal practices, microplastics are increasingly being detected in sea salt. The effects of these contaminants are still largely unknown. Cooking salt, without any additives like anti-caking agents, would be a better alternative to sea salt. The latter can be as low as 85 - 87% NaCl, whereas cooking salt is 95 - 97% NaCl. The purest form of salt is one of the laboratory grades such as GPR (General Purpose Reagent) or AR (Analytical Reagent). Both of these forms are not available to the general public and are very expensive, therefore not worth considering.

Sir. I am shiby a native of Kerala in India. Thank you for this valuable knowledge and this video is made me to console myself with the knowledge how my lovely female betta fish died. She died the next day of her breeding and laying hundreds of eggs. Some local aquarium fellow told me to add some sea salt to her bowl to recover from injuries after mating. By God's grace she didnt had even a single damage even to her fins but even i added quarter table spoon of salt as per that fellows advice. My mistake i left her like that and she died next day. I was so worried that how my such an active fish died of. Now i understood what has happened and i feel so bad about it. Thank you sir now i got the knowledge about how, how much and when to use salt to aquarium. 😔

so loosely translated 1 tablespoon of salt is about 17g. The aquarium salt directions says 1 tablespoon per 10g. so 1.7g per gallon or assumming 3.8 liters per gallon 0.45g / L so you are correct. So are you saying we need to use roughly 4 tablespoons per gallon?

The volume per gram of salt varies a lot depending on how coarse the salt is. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XGCY9Cpia_A.html this video is a nice explanation.
