For decades, countries around the world have been testing the hypothesis that the only thing that matters in school is how well students perform on academic tests. The results of this vast social experiment are in, and they are not good: Focussing narrowly on test scores is a dumb idea that destroys’ creativity, well-being and initiative in children. Employers want to hire young people who can demonstrate creativity, initiative, and social skills. In fact, everyone wants young people to demonstrate these “nonacademic” outcomes. What are the alternatives? What can parents, teachers, and others who care about children do? What can we do now to prepare children for the uncertain, complex, and challenging future that they face? Dr. Steve Hughes is a pediatric neuropsychologist and Director of the Center for Research on Developmental Education, a social business that guides organizations seeking to document the unique, wide-scope outcomes that result from experiential, non-traditional, and growth-oriented programming. Dr. Hughes’s areas of expertise are assessment of cognitive, social, emotional, and moral development, and is a strong advocate for educational approaches that foster human development. He serves a chair of the Association Montessori Internationale Research Network, and is the coordinator of AMI’s Global Outcomes Project. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Gabriel Ximénez I disagree, I think school does have the ability to make a procastinator of someone because it takes away free time (after school) and it most of the time very boring. So for some People these situations Will make you procastinate more. I am also one of those People.

they're only successful because they had goals to attain and worked diligently toward it. If you're procrastinating after school, what's to say that you wouldn't procrastinate once you quit? You won't have something that you *need* to get up to do, so what's to stop you from never getting out of bed?

One thing school did for me was completely turned me away from reading books. Im now geting back to reading but its not thanks to school. Also more you are interested in what grades you have, less you are interested in actually learning stuff.

School did kill my interest in books probably because they made it seem like a chore. "Read 30 minutes everyday and I'll be checking your booklog to see if you were reading." That was something my teachers back in elementary school always told us in class. Luckily I found interest in Visual Novels in video games, so there is a chance maybe I could get back into books, but probably not.

I learned more from watching nearly a hundred videos on writing fictional narratives in the span of half a year than most of my English Teachers could have taught me. So, basically, RU-vid taught me more than school did in a more effective, efficient, and time-saving method

Good talk. It points us in the direction we should be going. Sadly economic considerations take precidence over higher motives. School will continue to fail many children.

I hate tests. Honestly, I preform well, but I feel like it breaks my school’s motto of only demonstrating you know something once. I get high scores, but now I kinda wish my parents stopped bringing up how high my scores are.

I really hate the education system, it's unfortunate that the education system sucks. School has taught me to hate learning because they make learning feel stressful and unmotivating. It's just assignment after assignment and you having to complete it for a good grade. I believe grades are never a good thing, yes colleges want them but what do they really accomplish. All they are are letters. Letters that tell people who smart you are in school. I believe it's way better and much healthier to give yourself more time to have freedom and experiment on things you are interested in rather than just mindlessly having to stay up late at night trying to complete your homework or project that is due in a few days. If I ever made a company, for the job interview instead of basing someone off their grades, why not have them take a test to see how good they are at the job they want. It's more fair then just giving the A student a job and refusing to take a C or B student. Creativity was something that school almost killed before I discovered video games like Persona and Danganronpa which sparked my interest in wanting to write. Although my stories aren't good, I keep wanting to make more and more until I believe I can perfect them. School tried to tell me to think a certain way, and they tried making me lose my interest in learning but because of the internet and video games, I realized that anyone has the power to learn anything. That you can be anything you want, and if you work hard at something you will get it. School takes away time for kids to try and experiment on their own to learn things they haven't learned before, if you take away the interest of learning in kids, the next generation of adults won't be creative and won't be willing to think differently. Everyone would just have the same mindset. I can't imagine a world like that. This is why I'm glad we have people come out and explain why the education system is bad because too many people keep saying that school isn't a horrible place and it does a great job teaching the next generation how to live a life.

You don't need good marks to do well in the world, what you need is this: brain. Brain development is experience dependent. Motivated efortul repeated trial am error experimental interactions with the environment. Exercise it, the brain is a muscle kind of. What should school be for? Building the brain. School is usually for learning things. That's not an environment designed to build a brain. There are consequences chasing the test scores. 4 day school week made scores go up. Tests predict nothing on the economic development of a country. Give me an example of a time when you solved an analytically difficult problem. They want people who can innovate who are creative who can communicate who can collaborate within the company and the customers.

Maturita.also maturitni skouska.. I think this is the end of the Czech equivalent of high school, to determine where they rank and are placed in college. From google: Maturita is the name of the universal leaving qualification of four-year secondary schools and is a requirement for university studies and higher professional schools. It is made up of a number of subjects.

the concept of the "test" is a sound concept if in school there were only one class of that cariculum being taught by one teacher to that one class. the test that was made up by that one teacher given to that one class would be a fair judgement on what was learned after being taught. If the exam is created by 3rd party pears and made to reflect what should have been learned after being taught that class then you are not only testing the person attending the class but the teacher who put together the course coriculum. How did i fair against others? well which others? the ones in my class or the ones in other classes or the ones that had taken test crated by third parties? did the test show that my brain grew, my brain did not grow, my brain shrank??
