In short; use v60 or above. The V rating is what matters. V60 won't do high bitrate 120p 4k and many S&Q, while v90 will do most settings, while the CF express A cards will do all.

I do appreciate the content on this video. Please remember that folks who need to view this may not be as familiar with terminology, etc. so it can be very difficult to take in what we need to hear when you blaze through the numbers and menu settings as fast as you do. I can barely tell what menu you are on before you change it again. Please slow down.

I got the Sony Tough v90 cards for my a7iv, and I had massive buffer issues. I even had to send them in multiple times and yet still weren't fixed. I got the Kingston v90 and those have been fantastic so far.

I picked up a Pergear 260gb type A card that they released recently. I have the a7rv and the a7iv and for both cameras it is noticeably faster in buffering when shooting burst mode. And what a difference it is uploading the images to my iPad Pro and my Mac Studio. I know pergear is not a known name but I’m willing to give them a chance. I paid $179 on my business account with Amazon and they gave 10% off so it was around $160 for 260 gigs. I paid $175 for a 80 gig Sony type A that fills up super fast on my R5. And trying to buy a reputable uhs-ii v90 with 260gb Will cost even more than Pergear. I liked it so much I picked up another one.

HELLO! I just got a used Sony PMW-EX1R on eBay! Shot some footage on an SXS to SD Adapter Card. When I Uploaded all the Files via my SD Card Reader the Folder on my Capture SSD had many individual Folders that each contained Subfolders! How do I batch capture my footage from my Sony SD Card all video in one Folder? Like the way we used to, 'batch capture' our whole hour of Mini DV Video! What Software do I need?

Hey I just started using a SanDisk 128GB v90 300mb/s in my A74. I filmed in XAVC S codec and only files recorded in 60p were "hidden" when the card was inserted into the internal card reader, but I can see the footage on the camera screen, AND when my import window for FCPX comes up, but I can't actually get or see the files on the card in Finder. Why would the frame rate matter? Is this a bad card?

I was worried I’d need to spend a lot of money upgrading my media when I bought my Sony A7IV. Coming from a Canon 5DMK3 and EOS R, I had a TON of Sandisk Extreme Plus V30 cards. I’ve been using them on my recently bought Sony A7IV in the last few months and have not come across any issues, even when shooting in 4k60p! I haven’t had a need for the ALL-I codec so I don’t feel any pressure to buy V90’s. Anyone else have thoughts/experience on using V30 cards?

I use v30s on mine as well. However, I'd suggest you to look into v60s as you can shot 100fps 10bit HD with it.

How is the heat compared between SD cards and CF type A? If I run a7iv with 256gb prograde SD cards for a while (interviews), it will overheat (even with high temp mode). Wondering if CFA is any cooler

I've been running with the ProGrade v90 cards for a while since they were recommended to me by Tony Dae. They are great cards. Never had any issues with them. But, definitely looking to upgrade to the CFexpress Type A cards.

@@musings2134 upgrade possibly because the V90 can't record the fastest i-frame codecs in slomo. So as this video says if you want to be prepared to shoot everything this camera can do you need the Type A CFexpress card.

I’m going cf express..I have a podcast I had to scrap the video because Sd card wasn’t powerful to transfer from camera to computer..I have the a7 4 and I record for an hour it sucks that Sony don’t let you trim video inside camera like canon..

Now that we can shoot DCI 4k, is a V60 card able to shoot DCI 4k at 48fps? I think the math works out to be right at the V60 mark but not positive. Please confirm. THANKS.

I use mostly the lexar 1667x v60 cards in my a7riv,a9, and my a7iv without any issues. I bought a type a card for the a7iv and it did nothing to make it run faster for photography other than if you’re doing burst shots. But I would never use that camera for burst. I do have some v90 prograde and it is not make my a7riv start up or buffer any faster. That camera is just slow but takes phenomenal photos. But I stick with the V 60 cards.

Over recent times we have been asked to make corporate promotional videos for retail property for which we used a mixture of Drone & Sony 6300/400 on various gimbal setups for editing in Davinci Resolve Studio. As a side hustle if you will from our drone business, the requests have grown to the point we found the limitations of these cameras to be holding us back. To that end we just picked up an FX30 which arrives next week. Looking to shoot in Slog 10bit @ 4K/60, do you feel a Sandisk v90 200mb SD card would be sufficient for this and do you have any recommendations? Really starting to delve deeper into the colour grading aspect and the best way to capture the footage for that in Resolve Studio.

I use 2 A7SIII and I utilize 2 slots in both cameras, so I had to buy 4 cards. Also, I need high capacity for longer recoding, so I've chosen SD Prograde v60 256GB as good middle ground for speed and value. 4k XAVC S up to 100fps is all I need for work and I guess most of the ppl would agree with that. In my case even v90 (x4) would be too expensive but I might get 1 CF-A just for fun to unlock all recording options.

@@trivacker I think the card you mentioned is V30 so it wouldn't work. Don't look at read/write speed declared by manufacturer. Make sure that the card you buy is UHS-II V60 or V90. You can find it in card specs.

Sony SF-M Tough (150mb/s write) v60 are actually build similarly strong as CF-express Type A. They are also similar expensive as ProGrade v60 while being more sturdy, and for buffer clearing it's faster according to AlikGriffin site (probably cause sony mem card with sony camera good compatibility and more testing done). I bought 7 of these in 256gb. Now thinking of maybe buying V90 but not sure if worth it. By your video i dont think i will be using XAHS -SI but just the S version, for travel footage, simple edits, the HS seems asking for problems. But i might try 8k (for zooming content) ton fop of the mountain to the double lakes i will visit) plus also 4k 60p if it works with S and V60. Need more research and still hoping for an A7RV at my tresshold price, saw two already but was to late.

Good question actually. Fx 30 has a usb c port indeed. Would be cool to be able to record on an external ssd or something via usb c. I will try that out, when I get the fx 30. Or did you find out if it works?

I always get V90's, usually Lexar, Sandisk and have never failed me, knock on wood. I just bought the Kigston Canvas v90 bc it had great reviews and was "cheaper" than most others. I have not had a chance to use it yet, but it had great reviews and sometimes amazon has great sales... You just have to keep an eye out for when they are on sale. The Type A Cards are still way to expensive and are not necessary unless you have an FX3 or A7sIII and need to shoot 4K 120p at full resolution.

Sony A7C2 have same video settings as the A7IV but don’t support CF express cards. Is it possible to shoot in ALL I codec in S&Q mode at highest frame rates in A7c2?? Sony shouldn’t be putting such an option if it is not supported by the card. Any users of a7c2 please clarify…

I got two lexar v60 and they are too slow for XAVC S 4k video. I recorded some clips and stopped recording and wont play the clips. I even lowered to HD. Nope. I took them out of the camera and used sandisk v30. All i had and they work fine for 4k 30 in XAVCS -lower bit rates but they saved the day. Is lexar lying about the speed of the cards? I will return them and get pro grade v60. I just shoot in XAVC S 4k 30, 4k 60 and HD 30 and 60.

Were able to use 4k 60 with the v30? Cause i was able to record 4k60 with the v30 SanDisk Extreme Pro. Gonna test today if it records continuously til it’s full.

I was able to record some clips at 4k60...not a problem. but nothing too long...I still think I will get some v60 cards soon..but not LEXAR- those didnt work for me. The camera would stop recording and I lost some clips. Too slow. Maybe not real v60...dunno...thanks

Sure the type A cards are nore reliable but on the A7IV at least, it only has one Type A slot. I can record simultaneously to always have a backup with two V90 SD cards.

Type A is just too expensive for what they are for me. As I don't really need that high video performance and I don't really shoot sports or action with my A7IV. I use an identical pair of Sony E 256gb SD cards in my A7IV. They only have a write speed of 120mb a sec as V60 UHS-II cards but that's good enough for me 95% of the time. The most important thing being they are quality and reliable cards with a good capacity at a fair price. Eventually I will buy some Type A cards but not at the current pricing.

I haven’t tested that. The results would be negligible. All my cards are type A that I generally use if the option is there

Dude question for you. Like many others I don’t want to pay a bajillion dollars for those super expensive Type A memory cards.   If I don’t need to shoot above 30fps, can I get away with V60 cards (there are SDXC, and U3 cards) and still achieve the absolute highest video quality?

With h.265 you get better quality at the same bitrate or the same quality at lower bitrate. But it won't even play properly on many older PC's and needs more processing power to edit it in video editing software.

those type A cards are way to expensive and the highest you can go is 160GB for each card and i believe they are around $500.00. if Sony was to have it so it uses CFexpress type B cards well that is a tad cheaper and you could get a 2.0TB OWC Atlas Pro High-Performance CFexpress Type B Memory Card for $649.00 that is way better then the type A cards and the type B cards are better and faster. Why Sony Continues to use that awful crappy CFexpres type A cards i have no idea, oh wait yeah i know, because every time some one buys a CFexpress type A card, Sony gets paid LOL So really Sony Doesn't care about it's customers..
