I also went to highschool in the US (in Oregon acutally) and I could relate to very many things he said. I acutally wrote my "Facharbeit" which is a 15 page thesis required for graduating with the "Abitur" about the different sports systems in the Us and in Germany. I think the most shocking thing for me was the ignorance of some of the people I met there. I couldn't believe that people acutally thought that Hitler was still alive and that we don't have cars or mobile phones in Germany. And then they'd be driving a VW and having T-Mobile as their provider.
5 лет назад
It's not so much the ignorance but the automatic assumption of superiority. It's much cheaper to brainwash kids into thinking "We're No.1" than to actually be No.1.

I didn't realize that T-Mobile was Deutsche Telekom until I saw the ads in Germany that were just like the T-Mobile ads in the US! But I went to American high school years ago and I was never that stupid. It may depend a lot on where. Small town Trump supporter places are really ignorant.

Well we had elective classes at my Gymnasium. In 6th grade you decide wether you want to learn latin or french. And an completly set of all kinds of elective classes (arts, sciences, social stuff, languages) that you could pick one from for the 8th and 9th grade. For the last part of school (grade 10 -12) everyone has their own timtable and different classes.

Annett G. Nickol Was nur eingeschränkt richtig ist. Eight-/nine year gymnasium steht für G8/G9, und ein gymnasium teacher ist ein Gymnasiallehrer. English speaking folks are not that dumb. I was on a highschool exchange year in Astoria, Oregon (why I always love the footage Nick takes in Portland, it reminds me of my time there -> getting back on topic) and I had pretty much the same experiences. With the school spirit that I found so fascinating and the great electives which made me look forward to school (I had fisheries / Marine biology and fisheries technolgy because they had a trout and salmon fishery at my school which was just amazing to me. No, normal school in Germany would have Marine biology as a topic and none would be even close to having their own fishery where the students could learn very hands on. We would also go on field trips all the time with those two classes and go sine netting or fishing or helping out at a "real" fishery. I had the best of times. The only downside is, I still miss it all the time. I constantly compare things to the US and be like, 'when I was in the US...' I wish I could just teleport back to my hostfamily and see them again, though we still write and videochat, and they have visited me and I went back to visit them 1 1/2 years ago I want to see them again in person already, see the Columbia River, and the Pacific, and my school, and my house, and my road, and downtown, and all my friends there that are now off to college all over the US. I just miss it all

Very cool idea. Great video. Gerry had interesting views. I (as a German immigrant in the States) watched my daughter go through high school (in the Commonwealth of Virginia), and I couldn´t believe how easy school was compared to going to school in Germany. There´s a lot of "rigging" going on in high school, meaning that the students are being helped to get better grades, rather than the grades reflecting their actual level of knowledge. Unthinkable in Germany, but my daughter loved it.
@ohauss
@ohauss 6 лет назад
On the other hand, in Germany, you sometimes wonder what the purpose of educational facilities is. "Grades reflecting their actual level of knowledge" can also be translated to "reflecting the capability of the staff to transfer the knowledge to this particular student". It's often "eat or die" and if a student struggles then instead of making the effort to actually teach them, they are forced to make another, hoping that the same method that failed the first time will magically work the second time...
@voiceinthechaos
@voiceinthechaos 6 лет назад
I absolutely agree with you, and that´s another large can of worms. I graduated in Germany in 1987, and during my entire time in the German school system, I couldn´t believe how cruel the system was. I don´t know how it is nowadays, but I am sure that there´s still A LOT of room for improvement.

If school is really that easy for a student in the US than the parents should be trying to get them into advanced placement classes to keep them challenged and learning. That type of thing is up to the student and the parents in the US. Teachers will make reccomendations to students or parents to look into these classes but it's up to you and your kid to make that decision.

When attending an American high school, the only history you’re being taught is the history of the United States? That explains a lot...
@jesusgonzalez6715
@jesusgonzalez6715 6 лет назад
Well to be fair we learned next to nothing about history of places other than Germany after the Napoleonic Era. I think the US Civil War should be taught in more detail in Germany and there should be more taught about Asia and Latin America.
@levim.3505
@levim.3505 6 лет назад
I don't know what form of school you are currently visiting, or have visited, but I learned quite a lot about history apart from postnapoleonic Germany. Stone Age in Europe and advanced civilizations in Egypt and Mesopotamia, Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, Middle Ages and the discovering of America, Modern Era in Europe with the French Revolution and Absolutism, Nationalism, Colonialism, Industrializiation and Imperialism, The War of Independence in the british-american colonies and recent history (Weimar Republic, first and second world war, GDR, Russian Revolution and Globalization) and if there was any spare time, my history teacher would even teach us about rather trivial mesoamerican cultures, the warring states, mycenaean culture, Persia, and the rise of the Ottoman Empire, all of which were aside from the learning schedule. And what I mentioned is probably only half of what we actually really looked into. Of course, the emphasis may lie on the german history and influence in those subtopics, but to say that the german education system does not offer anything next to new modern German history is a bit ridiculous in my opinion.
@jesusgonzalez6715

Hm, might be because I made my Abitur in 1991 or because I made it in a different Bundesland than Gerry, but I remember that everyone in my academic year had a different timetable. Highschool in the US is 9th - 12th grade iirc, so it's almost like german Oberstufe. (11th - 13th back then resp. again in certain Bundesländer) So before that, yeah, everyone had the same subjects at the same times, but from 11th grade on we had 2 Main- and 2 Secondary Subjects, that would be the subjects for the final Abitur tests. In my case it was German + Maths Main and History + Art (-history) Secondary, other people had totally different subjects, and besides the fact, that you had to have at least 1 Main subject from the mathematical/scientific field and 1 language you were totally free to choose. You could also decide to drop Religion, PE, 1 of your foreign languages and most scientific subjects, on the other hand pedagogics, philosophy and, iirc, ancient greek have only been introduced as optional subjects in 11th grade. I had friends whom I only saw during breaks, some only during some classes. There was nobody, friend or not, whom I saw during all or even most classes. There was one girl whom I remember for no other reason but that we had 3 classes together. English, btw, was also at least from 11th grade on (I only had it from 8th grade on, my first foreign language was latin, so I'm not really sure when this usually starts) just reading and interpreting books and conversations about - mostly british - history and social issues. If I think about it, form 11th grade on everything was reading and interpreting sources. Well, except Maths, that is.

Ok now I understand the Pisa tests XD In Thuringia it is not like you can completely take down the main fields like German or math but you can choose if you want to do them as a Leistungskurs or Grundkurs (which is basically a extended or easier version of the same stuff) However you have to choose one as the extended and one as the normal version. Also there are rules for the subjects to choose like at least one out of the natural science section, one social subject and so on. However this is not the first time to choose! We had to choose first time which 2nd foreign language we want to learn in class 7and in class 9 we also had to choose between a 3rd foreign language or astronmics and more subjects of the natural science field. You should also remember that each state of Germany has its own rules for the schools and what to learn and how long. I for myself went to school up to year 12 and graduated with the A-exam while other states have to go for 13 years in total. Also there are 4 types of school in total: a primary school class 1-4 than the "Hauptschule" (main school) years 5-9 (German law is that everyone has to go to school for at least 9 years) which is basically for people who will work as normal workers, then there is the Realschule which goes class 5-10 which is best suited for people who want a mediocre job or are not sure if they want to study later on. and finally you have the "Gymnasium" which is basically the German version of highschools which is best suited for people that want to study later on. Even all of those 3 are seperated in theory it is stil possible to move on after you ended the Hauptschule or Realschule and graduate with an A-exam in the end. Trivia: Before a schoolmassacre in the capital of Thuringia "Erfurt" there were no passiv graduation level on the "Gymnasium" when you finished year 9 or 10 so if you failed the A-exam you had no graduation at all. This was one of the reasons a studend started the massacre in his old school. Even you were allowed to take the exams offschool for the graduation of the Realschule (which allowed you to participate in theire tests without the risk to fail and take an extra year) it was not common to do so. Nowadays starting with the year I was in the situation to be in class 10 the Gymnasiume make theire own tests equal to the graduation tests of the Realschule so there it is not possible to leave the Gymnasium without a graduation at all if you finished class 10. (by the way we where the last one to choose whether we want to do the normal offschool exams or the new ones (of course I went with the offschool version ^^))

You mate is partially wrong about the elective courses. 1. You can pick a certain amount of specialization via picking your high school. So you can choose to get to a vocational High School (berufliches Gymnasium) which will give you a rather specif curriculum depending on the focus of the High School. Mine for example offered 4 different paths to chose. Electrical engineering, IT, Economics and Dietetics. Plenty of more fields in different High Schools. The career specific stuff is about equivalent to the content they teach university freshmen. 2. While we can't build our personal curriculum during our High School years, we can set our own priorities. We can decide on which subjects are our advanced courses, which means more than double the amount of lessons in the chosen subjects, more important for the final grade point average. Furthermore we can decide to kick out subjects complete out of grade point average for the final high school certificate. So instead of adding subjects to our curriculum we can basically kick out subjects even when attendance is still in most cases required. 3. We choose our exam subjects ourselves. There are a few guidelines like you our chosen advanced course are part of the exam, furthermore you need at least one exam subject in a social, scientific and one language subject. Still not as flexible as US high school, but a lot more flexible for example as a austrian gymnasium.

It's not like you can't take any choices in the German school system. I can only speak for the Gymnasium but we can decide whether we want French or Latin (from 6th grade) and Spanish or some extra science (from 8th grade). And from 11th grade you can choose which subjects you want, although you have to do for example German, maths, at least 2 sciences, history and politics. For example I chose English, chemistry and history to be my main subjects alongside maths and German while I kicked out French, biology and art.

yeah, that was a pretty dumb comparison. They compared English class in the US vs English class in Germany. They should have compared the classes for the respective native language instead. From what I've heard, the concept of, say, Spanish class in the US isn't much different from an English class in Germany. Also, in Germany you can choose which type of school you go to, eg. if you go to a "Technisches Gymnasium" you'll have a whole other set of subjects. Which is kinda like choosing a whole block of electives at once. Or Realgymnasium with 3 living languages vs Gymnasium with Latin and old Greek.

There is some "choosing" of classes towards the end of your school career. Why in quotation marks? You can only choose a little bit and there are many requirements you have to satisfy, have at least 2 of this, have that, you can't have this if you have that, sorry our school is too small we don't offer those classes, you can't take this for your Abitur (final exams) because we don't have a qualified teacher....

I don't know about Germany, but in Hungarian highschool you can customize your studies to a degree. Selecting what kind of highschool you go to is already a decision. Some highschools have courses similar to a college that gives you a degree once you graduate, my friend went to one where she learned gardening. And she graduated as a certified gardener.(botanist) You can also select if you have more affinity with science or literature. I selected literature and we had a literature and grammar class every day. And you can select what languages you will study. English, French or German. Some schools have other choices, like Italian. Select 2 languages, a main and a secondary one.. And then the last 2 years of highschool, when you had to take extra classes of your choosing from a variety of subjects. These were to prepare you for college.
@ericminch
@ericminch 4 года назад
That sounds as flexible as the American system, yet being in Hungary I'm sure it can be as academically challenging as the German schools. One thing, though: botanist is not the same thing as gardener. Gardening is a fine trade and a good career for those with a talent, but botany is a science and a profession. I've known botanists who didn't have green thumbs, but could write any number of journal articles on tobacco mosaic virus.

If you live in smaller communities there is a lot events where people gather around here in Germany - including the soccer matches of the local clubs. It just is not school events but local events. It is not the sports of the 16 to 18 year olds that is interesting here but that of the adults from 18 to 35. When e.g. the U19 soccer players play there matches Sunday morning you might see some friends (if they are already awake as they have probably partied the night before), some parents and some that sit together making their Sunday Frühschoppen at the club. You are right - youth sport here does not draw that much attention. But - with our school system that separates the pupils of a class very early and spreads them over different schools in different communities - it is just different. And a lot in that age group 16 to 18 are already out of normal school training for a job.

And than some special courses, like economy, technology or drama. Could you please explain the rest of the school certificate? What is GPA and so on. And what do you learn in the "Teacher Aid" course? thanks

I can answer one of your questions: GPA is the abbreviation for grade point average which is the overall average of your grades. Typically schools use a 4 point system as this table shows gpacalculator.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/grade-point-equivalent.png

First of all, there is no "German school system" as each of the 16 states (Baden Württemberg is the state Hall is in) gets to decide on its own school system. However, the systems tend to converge on an overall model of a tiered system with four years of elementary school and different types of high school which either prepare people for university ("Gymnasium") or for an "Ausbildung" ("Hauptschule, Mittelschule in some cases Realschule"). There is some choice involved for students in lower classes e.g. one can often chose the second foreign language from offers including French, Latin, Spanish and so on (different depending on school and state) in the last two years of Gymnasium, which roughly correspond to the first year of college in the US, one can chose some subjects to drop (but certain core subjects cannot be dropped, again differing by state) and sometimes also some subjects to go into more detail. To give a personal example, in my last two years of high school, I dropped physics but did more intensive studies of English and Geography.

but you can still take a routh average and compare it to the US. Like in Germany you would never have stuff like "autoshop" or "military studies" as classes

What I liked about the american school system is that it rewards work. Do your Homework and turn it in and you wont fail the class/get better grade/be rewarded. German system is more like "you didn't raise your hand in class enough and didn't kiss the teachers ass enough to get the good 'behavior-grade'." A lot of tests in the U.S. are multible choice test . The answer is either right or wrong. It's simply fair. In Germany teachers manipulate grades up or down("the majority looked right so you get the points") to help the student or to get to an even grade. I mostly benefited from that, but I always hated this system. The U.S. system also isn't split. Everybody goes to the same school not like in germany where your future is decided in 4th-5th grade if you will have the opportunity to became a lawer,doctor, and so on. Yes you have the opportunity to climb the ranks but it's harder and a lot of times results in more time(years) in school. In the U.S. you decide your future by which classes you take. Will you do photography and similar classes or will you take the chemistry and physics class. It's your choice and you have the opportunity. In Germany if you fail a class. You have to retake all of them not just the one or two classes you failed. Again it's a big waste of time and resources. Let's be honest most of the stuff you learn in school is unimportant. And you won't remember it later on. It's more of a day-care facility so ones the parents can go to work without the kids burning down the house. So I like the american approach where they include all those club activities in the school environment but don't make it mandatory. School in the U.S. is social hotspot of the cummunity. I enjoyed it very much. The story gets reversed when we talk about university, but I can't speak of first hand experience there. But the simple view on costs decides it for me^^ cheers

WEll in Contrast in the US if you leave in a bad neighbourhood you usually have no choice but to go to a bad school with little funding. In Contrast rich people will move to areas with the best schools. In Contrast in Germany a kid from a bad part of town could go to a good school in another part of town if they are intelligent enough

Actually quite a lot Student from "Realschulen" will successful make the jump to senior gymnasium. Usually not without doing the first year twice to catch up on all the missing stuff ... but that is an issue with a rather low quality on their previous schools. Now not being able to just fail in single subjects is indeed a problem and so is the large difference between the three school types in middle-school, it's rather difficult to get one step up. A system with more fine-tuning would be preferred, but often lacks in results when compared to the pure pressure generated by gymnasiums.
@Traumglanz
@Traumglanz 6 лет назад
That ends basically with 10th grade. Senior High is a rather flexible system with people driving an two hours a day just to get to school.

I've been to an American High School for two weeks only, but I made very similar observations. For me, to sum it all up you could say "German HS are good for what you learn and American HS are good for everything else (sense of being connected, more sports, more electives, ...). Or in other words: Americans don't really learn that much in school, I guess that's also why a bachelor's degree is supposed to take a year more in the US than in Europe by default. For example, I was in a Junior's math class and they just started with trigonometry, while we had been using it for years in maths, physics, even art already. And the students did not even understand it.. That was most shocking for me. And the psychology teacher that slept on a bench in front of his classroom until the bell rings ;)

Well and if school is really that easy for a student in the US than they should be signing up for advanced placement classes to keep them challenged. But in the US thats on you and your parents to do it. Teachers will of course make reccomendations to kids but they don't make the decision.

But the whole focus on sports is also quite annoying for those that aren´t part of it, which is what a friend of mine who was an exchange student in the US told me. That the sport stars could do nothing wrong basically, that they could be the biggest douches and idiots but still would get good grades because they were on the team.
@aritakalo8011
@aritakalo8011 6 лет назад
eberbacher007 yeah. Also there is the risk of the sports activities eating resources from other school activities. Fact of life is schools don't have limitless resources. I don't think it is purely zero sum game, but still too much investing on sports in attention, staffing, facilities and money may be detrimental to other subjects. Do we build a new sports facility or do we build a new chemistry class room with proper laboratory equipment. Ideal world, do both. In reality you probably don't have money for both. Do we have sports team going to tournaments or do we organize field study trip for geology classes to go do actual field study trip in a geologically interesting location. You know actually knacking on actual rocks with actual hammers and looking at mineral lines etc. Again unlimited money? Do both. Limited money? Which is more important for educational establishment. Also though 'thing for the whole school', pretty sure not everybody can be in the school football team, which risks creating in and out crowds. It is a balancing act. You need some sports purely as PE. It is important developmentally. But getting too deep in the weeds of competive sports isn't good in my opinion. I think it should be more a matter of PE and tiering it as such.

@@aritakalo8011 lmao, how many and how often do you think "sports facilities" need to be built?. In my area the High School football stadium is like 25 years old and only recently had the turf replaced, the rest of it is essentially the same since it's basically all concrete, brick or aluminium bleachers. There really isn't much for maintenance. Also, the Three High Schools in my area with a population of about 100k all share the same stadium for games.

How is it annoying? If you don't want to play sports don't. Students playing sports getting away with stuff is illegal. It obviously does happen but it is not a given or norm. In the US we generally also mind our business, worry about your own studies and not what others are doing.

I can only compare college/university between the US and Germany, but I definitely agree: school in the states is a lot easier than in Germany 🙈 I feel like the grades are weighted differently, too, which makes it possible to get kinda good grades even if you messed up some assignments. On a side note: My baby sister just turned 18, and her driving by herself is most definitely terrifying and wrong (but I love her anyways and she's doing great. 😅)

The reasons why you started playing football... 1. No "real" soccer (or Lacrosse) available. 2. Baseball is (IMHO) lame, I already hated cricket in England. 3. Football looked interesting... Oh, and chicks. And yeah, what really sucks in Germany is that there's *no school spirit* at all - and even no class spirit when you doing your Abitur. You don't really give a fuck about anybody. That's what's so much better in the US/UK. US: through sports/activity, UK: school uniforms. Even when I had many problems as the only Jerry/Fritz/Hun at my public school - we stood everytime together against the kids from other schools. But: I had many "nerdy" friends in the US (due to my hobbies outside football/sports like playing video games, RPGs/TCGs or "science stuff") - and if you are not into sports, you have (they had) a really tough time being part of it, e. g. when I was invited to parties I often asked ('cause they were my friends as well) if I can bring X, Y, Z with me: "Sure, why not? Who are they?" 😐😐 Elective classes sound great when you are a student (couldn't do that, 'cause I had to continue a lot of classes if I didn't want to repeat that year in Germany), but if I look back I'm kinda happy that I was forced to do the "German way" because otherwise I wouldn't have gotten a broad education. And many doors I could walk through easily later wouldn't have been open at all.
