Nice video mate! I’m new to fishing and this is my first winter season and I’m kind of frustrated right now, I’ve been fishing probably 12 times last 4 months for a whole day and only managed one decent sized perch with a dropshot worm. But I see now I’ve been using the wrong approach and it makes me feel better thinking I have the chance to catch something 😂

1 make sure you’re on a venue that has a decent number of predators 2 the harder it gets and colder the water, the smaller you should go if you just want to get a few bites 👍

Incredible advice, thank you Thom. What I like best about your videos is you try to describe the reason for fishing certain methods from what seems like a fish psychology perspective - what you think they might be thinking at any given situation. I think thats a great starting point for anticipating your next move when doing any form of fishing, especially lure fishing.
@Thomhuntfishing
@Thomhuntfishing 3 года назад
Yep you’ve summed that up well. In the past I often describe certain species with characters too.... I’ve always seen big Zander as a sophisticated, well read, cigar smoking types, turning their nose up to many offerings but when the time is right they make big decisions and are not the type you want to cross 😂 Sounds silly but kinda works in my head for considering how best to approach outwitting them!
@thelureangler4346

@@Thomhuntfishing I absolutely love that analogy, and the way of characterising their behaviours tries to put you “in their shoes”, although fish clearly don’t have shoes! 😆 As an idea for a subject for discussion on another video, I’d be interested to know how you’d approach locating feeding fish at a venue you’d never fished before. For instance pike fishing when you don’t know the hot-spots on a venue, what are you searching for on the sonar? In terms of depths, weeded areas, drop offs, searching for bait shoals, structure etc... Would your target areas change during the year, perhaps deeper in winter? I suspect this question would have a vastly different answer and potentially 3 different explanations for pike perch and Zander. Thanks for all your content Thom. 👍🏻

My method is, I always have a small box full of really whacky and unorthodox lures that ive come across and collected over a long period of time. Whacky could be whacky shapes or whacky colours or just _'out of season'_ lures like using surface lures in winter. I was having one of these hard days with a medium setup trying to fish for some pike. went quite a few hours with nothing and I gave up and broke out the box of whacky lures. I used a tiny 10g 2 section mouse lure that was supposed to be a surface lure but all the terminal gear just caused it to sink really slowly or submerge itself.... With that said. I didnt catch any pike that day, but the perch were absolutely hammering it even though i lost a fair few as the hooks were too big and in really odd positions to get a decent hook up.

Your videos are great Thom. I am learning an awful lot from your channel as a new Lure angler. I need a bit of advice though please. How would you go about fishing a large clear gravel pit from the bank for large perch with lots of weed and boulders on the bottom. I know there are good perch in it. But I am suffering one blank after another at the moment. I won't give up but to say its getting to me now is a bit of an understatemt. Thanks in advance.

@@Thomhuntfishing Hi Thom. Unfortunately I'm going out alone. I've had to try and learn the ropes by watching videos like yours. Been out a few times now on the canal. It's really really weedy so a lot of snags. I did catch s perch, beginners luck! It just came off the hook as I went to hold it. I guess I'm trying to copy what I've seen. A few questions mate. Do I need to keep my line tight? Do I keep my rod in the air or pointed down? Also, I have a 1-7g rod. Do I keep my eye on the end or the line? When I caught the perch it must have taken it on the drop because as soon as I reeled in I felt it wiggling

@@pauldunning7934 not sure how you getting on now? You still at it? I started out on my own... I used 7cm fox replicants to catch my first ever fish and went on to catch another 3 that session , the second thing I caught fish on was fox slick sticks 6cm one deep divers (I have no affliation with fox 🤣).. you can fish with the tip up or tip down..my first fish came fishing with my tip up. I tend to try keep it down when windy or in generalnow tho, but you gotta try keep a tight line to you lure. So whichever you feel like is most suited to feeling things on the end on your rod.. I also tend to look at the end of my rod but you can feel when a fish has a pluck at you bait.. I tend to gently lean into most strikes and I always have my reel set so that it will give line if it's a bigger fish, setting your drag so a big fish can pull line helps me with hook ups I believe... rather than big Sharpe strikes. I use thin wire traces, iv been using 5kg ones bit have some 2.5kg ones coming. I'm also gonna start fishing fluro more this year. I'll be fishing neds this year. If I can help in any way let me no. Thom prob gets lots of questions so missus some. Shame you not in leeds or West yorkshire. I'm needing a fishing buddy 🤣 hope you have picked things up now .

Hey Thom, maybe a video about picking the right rod/casting weight for your fishing style. Like for example i want to use 9cm shadteez with a 10gr jighead (thats a total of 17gr). Can i still use it on my finesse tc 5-15 gr, are is it better to use a stronger version like the 7-21 gr. I know many people including me struggling with that. Here on the canal i see many people using the wrong setup for their fishing style, and using to heavy lures for their rod.

Hi Thom ! Thanks for the advice your constantly putting into your videos. I want to ask you about getting a bite in these cold days. Im fishing a river with aprox. 5 degrees water temperature full of zander, pike and big perch, however, I'm not able to get a bite for a long period of time recently (3 weeks). I usually use jigging technique and paddle tail lures. Most effective seems to be chartreuse green color for a zander and sparkling blue or motor oil for a pike. I already tried to switch to drop shot with megateez lure. Tried 2 colors (baitfish/lime curd) and sizes (9 cm,5 cm) already. I fished the dropshot montage very slowly, also tried to speed up a little bit, unfortunately, with no results. One unusual thing is that I'm able to fish mostly at night or in the late evening. I used to catch a lot of zander at this time in summer and autumn since they're feeding. Also now in the winter they are feeding in the late evening when I'm fishing so they are higher up in the water column. Only difference is in the intensity of the attacks. Instead of loud splashes now I can see lot of tiny fry steadily spreading on the water surface and sometimes a splash can be heard. Also the water is very clear these days, which might be a problem and actually was a problem in the past (in the water with higher temperature - above 10 degrees). Best regards from Slovakia.

Hi Juraj, winter can be a difficult time. When it’s really cold, I generally prefer the middle of the day as if there’s a bit of sun it can warm the water just a tiny bit and trigger a feed response. But if you are seeing predators feeding that’s a good sign (sometimes if bank fishing the fish move in to deep water too far from the bank so you can never get near them) If there are big fish present, maybe try a big bait. Remember that as their metabolism slows down a big pike may only feed once every 3-6 days, so if you offer a big bait nice and slow it’s a large easy meal for them 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 try that

Hi Thom another great video. Would love to no your thoughts on leaders ie when do you use wire and when do you use flourocarbon? What strength or diameter you use? do you use swivels and link clips? Thanks for all the information 👍
@Thomhuntfishing
@Thomhuntfishing 2 года назад
Hi Scott, yes I use wire quite a bit unless finesse fishing as I’ve caught so many huge pike now on Zander and Perch baits that I like the extra insurance! My wire traces are just a loop on one end (tied to braid or fluorocarbon) but you must use coated wire. On the other end just a simple snap clip. No swivels. I hate extra hard ware and like everything to be streamlined and neat

Yep.... definitely fish smaller lures and fish slower. The number 1 mistake I see people make is thinking predatory fish are always super crazy in how they attack.... a lot of the time they’re not in a 100% feeding mode so offer an easy small snack rather than a huge meal 👍🏻
@adam2jzzz801
@adam2jzzz801 3 года назад
Would you consider lures such as the Westin swim a negative lure ?
@Thomhuntfishing
@Thomhuntfishing 3 года назад
I would say it’s very versatile, fished quicker or with hard jerks it’s more of a positive lure. But (especially the suspending/low floating version) with small twitches and long pauses it’s a great negative lure

@Thomhuntfishing
@Thomhuntfishing 2 года назад
Hi there, 9 times out of 10 I see people lure fishing too quickly. Pike are the most aggressive species in the UK and will chase a quick bait when the water is warm, but slowing down, and putting pauses in your retrieve can be deadly. If you try that, then usually I’d say you might be using lures that are too big for the venue. If it’s a canal I often pike fish with just 3” lures as they are usually only 1-3lb fish. If the fish are bigger than that go up to a 4” or 5” lure but 4” is a brilliant all round pike size
@spike2111982
@spike2111982 Год назад
Thomwhat do you use to fix your stingers to your jig heads please
@Thomhuntfishing
@Thomhuntfishing Год назад
I either make a small loop on the stinger and put it over the jig head eye and then clip my trace on, or I clip the stinger loop in to the trace clip as well. I never put a stinger loop over the main hook…. If you apply too much pressure to the stinger it bends out the main hook

If I’m in an area where I’m confident there are fish there, I usually give each method around 30 minutes (so shads for 30mins, then dropshot for 30 mins etc) and within that 30 minutes I’ll try maybe a few different lures or the same lure and change colours
