From www.swimmingpo... - Choosing the right size cartridge filter for your swimming pool is more about the frequency of cleaning cycles than the size of the pool or the filter. Over-sizing a cartridge filter for your pool has the advantage of less frequent cleaning and maintenance of the filter. That means less work for you and less wear and tear on the paper cartridge as well as the filter body. If the cartridge filter on your swimming pool is very small, you will need to open the filter to remove and clean the cartridge far more often than if you had a much larger filter installed. A larger filter has more media available for cleaning and filtering the pool water. There is no real disadvantage or danger in having a larger pool filter.
10,000 gallon pool = 200sf cartridge filter
20,000 gallon pool = 300 - 400sf cartridge filter
30,000 gallon pool = 400 - 500st cartridge filter
40,000+ gallon pool = 500sf filter
When to clean a cartridge filter? When the pressure on the filter gauge rises 7 psi above your clean operational pressure this is time to clean the filter. You do not have to wait this long. This represents when you must clean the filter, but any time the filter pressure has risen above the clean operational pressure of your system you could go ahead and clean the filter. Low pressure is more efficiency than high pressure which is why you don't always want to wait until the last minute to clean your filters. Note that the pressure of a pool system should never be over 30 PSI.

You just saved me a lot of future work. I’m building a pool right now and the filter my builder was about to install was a 150sq ft. I just told him I don’t want to be cleaning filters every week and upgraded to a 320 sq ft.

14k gal 14x30 sport pool, 200 filter. I change every month during summer months. Surprisingly my local pool store thinks 150 filter is good for that size so you’re right about what’s common in the southern US.

I was just advised the exact opposite of what you advised re the larger the filter the better. Their position was that large filters will not indicate any need for cleaning for much longer periods, thereby causing excessive dirt, debris, bacteria etc to accumulate to the point where thorough cleaning will be very difficult, if not impossible. The filters of the larger units are about 10x the cost of a smaller unit. I would rather buy an extra filter @$100 and change weekly (cleaning the one I remove at my leisure) than paying $1000 to replace the larger filters that inevitably will harbour dirt with a 1/season cleaning. Thoughts?

We just had a pool built. Did initial fill and start up yesterday. It's a 30x15 rectangular inground gunite/diamondbrite pool. Not sure on gallons 16-17k? PB put in a Jandy CS200 cartridge filter. Guessing it's OK? I don't know anything about pools, but have been researching extensively. Right now I've been doing the 2x daily brushing for the DB plaster(pool guy can't come out for at least a week) Wondering if i should be cleaning the cartridge filter daily to remove the dust from initial construction

Great insight thank you! Considering switching from glass media to cartridge filtration. What brand/size do you recommend please? 18.5k gallon above ground.

how does this change for an indoor pool? - i just bought 100 sq feet for 10k gallon pool less dirt load since its not getting rain and wind bplowing stuff into the pool - plus i and very limited on space in the pump area (shares space with my house HVAC and well equipment)

Steve: Your videos have been very educational for me, and I appreciate the time you’ve taken to create them. Regarding the cartridge filter, I agree with your recommendations and want to get the largest cartridge filter possible. Currently, I have a Hayward DE filter for my 30K gallon pool. My pipes are 1.5 inches, but I noticed the cartridge filter models I'm interested in are designed for 2-inch pipes. Can I run a 525 sq ft filter with my 1.5-inch pipes, or will I need to downgrade the filter? I'm new to pools, so any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You can use 1.5" pipes just use reducing bushings at the filter. There is a point of diminishing returns. A 400sf for sure is good. 500 is pushing it a bit, but ypu could if you wanted. If you had 2" pipes for sure I go larger but realistically your system is or limited potential with such small plumbing lines, and unfortunately the pool is huge. I fell like you would be happy with a 425 sf cartridge filter. It also has 2.5" / 2" ports so use reducer bushings again as needed

I live in Houston, and currently have an old DE filter size of 24 sqft. My pool is about 18k gallons. I want to convert to a cartridge system. Would you recommend a 325 sqft filter? or should i go up to 425?

How is it going? I am in PA and have a 23,000 with 1 1/2 pipping and a 1.5 hp super pump. I’m getting sick of DE and thinking about going with a 425 or 525 cartridge.

I have a 60,000 gallon pool at work and run 2 580sqft filters. I have a 160,000 gallon pool at home and run 3 sand filters. I would like to upgrade my 3 sand filters to cartridge filters. Should i get 3 580sqft filters or 3 200sqft filters?

With cartridge filters as long as your filters can handle the flow your system generates then any size cartridge filter can do any size pool...what changes is the amount of time you can go in between cleaning cycles for the filter media. The larger your cartridge filter (system) the longer you can go in between needing to open and clean the filters. So for me, bigger is always better when it comes to cartridge filters.

What are your thoughts on the Aquastar Pipeline Filter?
@irmenkop85
@irmenkop85 Год назад
I would not recommend cartridge filters at all, unless you we are talking about old-fashioned coffee-making machines. A swimming pool should only be operated with sand filters to achieve properly clean water. Add some flocculation in the skimmer and you will have the cleanest water you could imagine. Just check it out at night with turning on your pool lights. Cartridges will only work for some weeks and would then needed to be replaced. However, I have never seen anyboy doing it. A sandfilter lasts 5 years or longer and only needs backwashing every two weeks.
@Swimmingpoolsteve
@Swimmingpoolsteve Год назад
I am not sure if you know what cartridge filters are. They are large and robust with flow rates far exceeding sand filters, with the ability to remove debris 3 times smaller than sand filters. The cartridges last 3 to 5 years on average. They are vastly superior to sand filters. I think you might be thinking of toy sized above ground pool cartridge filters which are too small for most useful applications.
@irmenkop85
@irmenkop85 Год назад
@@Swimmingpoolsteve I do know what cartridge filters are. Of course they have flow rates far exceeding sand filters, but flow rate is not equal to filter rate or even filter quality. Cartridge filters cannot be properly backwashed and they reach their filter limits much sooner than sand filters if the pool is affected by a lot of pollen, debris and other contaminates. If you want to keep a cartridge filter hygienic, you need to replace it pretty much every moth, otherwise the microbacterial contamination is building up. Every water purification facility works with sand filters and uses cartrige filters only as an add-on, if even. The scientific results are quite clear: There is nothing better than sand. Filter glass can do the job with some limits, cartridges cannot keep up in filtration performance. The only filter still worse than cartridges are fibre balls. It's a simple, but serious scientific matter, but people often do not take it serious enough, although they are jumping in their pool almost daily.

Both will easily work for your pool size. The only difference being the larger your filter the longer you can go in between needing to open and clean the filter elements.
