Heh, that's my mother's worst nightmare. I have to keep my frozen stock hidden at the very bottom of the storage freezer so there's no chance any guest or visiting relative will find them.
I keep all sorts of reptiles from snakes to bearded dragons, geckos and tortoises in my fridge I get from people who's babies passed away cuz I do taxidermy lol
My best friends roommate uses to have a TON of reptiles, and I remeber on several occasions going to the freezer to get ice cream while drunk, and getting super suprised by bags of dead mice. Not a pleasant sight at 3 am
My friend got me into snakes. And while I won't have a pet snake anytime soon i do find these videos very informative and fun. It opened a whole different world to me that I didn't know existed. Because RU-vid to me was just car racing and music. And now I appreciate the reptile world and the people who dedicate their lives to help these animals.
I live in a desert villiage in AZ and I keep finding dead toads and lizards, looking like they died of heat exhaustion. Is there anything I can do to help the wildlife in my area?
Hey Emily, I just wanted to let you know that a wild snake slithered over my foot this morning and when I realized what it was (Eastern Garter Snake) I didn't freak out at all!!
“A lot of ball pythons are picky eaters” Mine is a glutton and will eat anything 🙄 i could warm up a Cheeto and she would eat it (No, I have not given her a Cheeto lol)
My dad said that if I take care of my cats for 3 months he'll get me whichever snake I want but I feel like my mom won't let me even if I do take care of my cats ;(
One time i brought a rubber rat snake to school and everyone thought that it was real, venomous, and would eat everyone in a single sitting. Like no. It's a toy the length of my forearm, real ones aren't even venomous and also they can barely choke down a rat, much less than 80 seventh graders Edit: I was in a health/PE class in Jacksonville Florida. There probably wasn't actually 80 kids in the class, more like 60-70. But yes, the children are that dumb. What's even dumber is that it was a magnet school, preparing kids to go to medical school
Well, we dont call anything "jumbo" that's for sure. The only term we really use are "failure to thrive/ftt", which are the mice that don't keep up with their siblings in development, and "hopper", which is cause they're launch themselves off hands and to their deaths.
@P Z - Ball Pythons use a mix of both their Jacob's organ (the reason they taste the air with their tongues) and their heat pits to detect prey. if they prey is cooler or cold, the snake may pass it as not a good prey item as it has no body temperature. Also, if they've eaten recently, they may also not be attracted by the scent as much, and those two factors combined, are probably why they aren't going ballistic.
This is the first time someone has actually decently explained to me what to feed my two young corn snakes. Even the vet just said "roughly 3 times the size of the head", but I always had a hunch that was too small because the snakes didn't show a bump after feeding at all. Thank you so much for this
I never wrote a Comment on ur Videos but i just wanna say that about 2 Weeks ago i found ur Channel by accident and since than fell completley in love. I soaked in every Video like a Sponge and i'm craving more, now the Plottwist. I am extremly scared of Snake's and i have massive respect for them. But regardless i still watch ur Video's bc i like to educate myself about something i'm scared of. I'm still super super scared but i learnd soo much from here and maybe one day i will loose my fear due to education. Thanks for making such great Video's and educating us. Lot's of Love from Anna
I used to be terrified of snakes myself to the point where i couldnt even watch them in pictures or videos, but after watching educational videos for a couple of years i overcame that. I just bought my first snake last week, a beautiful corn snake and he brings me so much happyness. I believe that every kind of fear can be dealt with and in the end make you stronger. I hope this motivated you a little bit and i wish you the best of luck :)
I could barely touch snakes a couple weeks ago and now i'm totally fine with them because of watching these videos, however I am not going to get a snake as a pet because I don't have the heart to feed them since I currently have a pet hamster.
Omg!! This is the first time I've heard regurgitating actually causes the snake so much harm and you should not feed for another 2 weeks. I've never had this issue with my baby cornsnake yet, but I'm so thankful I watched this video ♡ thank you!!
As a novice snake owner, this information is invaluable. I now know that I should probably stick to adult mice (not young rats) for my juvenile corn snake, even when he is full size. Thank you for the wonderful videos! You are awesome.
I seen a garter snake coming home from school today and I told my mom and she freaked out I told her It was just a garter snake they can't do any real harm if I didn't find your channel I would have probably over reacted but I didn't YAY😄
Karrina Finley I was walking home from school one day and I saw a garter snake so I decided to catch it. It was really fun and then I let it go in the grass
Jazz face Hey there is no need to curse also I believe that they can speak English pretty ok if they were able to write about their experience with a garter snake.
@@mckenziem.j.2 dude, I was replying to someone who deleted their comment. I replied to someone who said something like "your English is horrible. You're probably like 8 or something. *insert angry child noises here*" so I was trying to defend them.
The chart tip is actually really helpful! It should be normalized. As a first time corn snake owner, my biggest concern was over feeding or under feeding because the size of the food seemed small. You’re videos help me fix mistakes and learn how to handle my snake in the future. Thank you so much and continue doing what you’re doing, I love the videos!!
You are actually a life saver. My 13 is birthday coming up and my mother decided to get me either a milk snake, corn snake, or ball python because I love reptiles and she thinks I’m finally ready for a proper beginner snake and you give me all I need to know about taking care of it.
I've pretty much always been interested in snakes, and interested in getting one, but I never really knew where to start my in my research. That's why I love your channel! Its SUPER helpful and you're always upfront with what's your educated opinion versus what's the common information!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!!!!!!!!!
Didn't know the multi vs single rodent, that's really good to know. (Thank you for stating your source.) I recently started watching, my husband and I have a few ball pythons and are working our way towards breeding in a year or so. I love your channel, definitely not as intimidating as other sources of information and I just love your energy and delivery style. I was brought here by Rex.
@Memyselfandkai :/ It's not that he nearly has no head now. He was hit by a lawnmower, so he almost became headless (or, dead). But, fortunately, he survived.🙂
I’m a basic Griffendor (I know I probably didn’t spell it right😂) We probably seem mental to the people who don’t know what a hufflepuff or a slytherin even is lol
@Bad Cattitude Oh wow, your family was one of those dumb "magic is the devil" types? Damn, I would probs be dead cause most of the stuff I like today is full of gay and magic, lmao. I wonder if your parents were scared of My Little Ponies to, they were probably just terrifying! Lmaooo!
This video was SO helpful!! I have been confused about how to best feed my ball python to help her grow and this has been very illuminating! Thanks for the diagrams and math stuff!
I find her videos very helpful as a snake owner! Because when you own a snake it's hard to know what type of size mice the snake needs. So I'm grateful for your videos!
“a lot of ball pythons are picky eaters” My ball python: **really wants to eat my goldfish and birds, knowing full well she has never eaten a goldfish, nor a bird**
Hi Emily, and Ed I do not own a snake, but I love your show, and I have learned so much about snakes. I used too work at a veterarian hospital, and have handled snakes that came in for treatment, that no one else would touch them. They are so beautiful, and very smart.🐊🦎🐍🐢❤️ Cindy . .
I feed my corn 1.5 to just under 2x the size of his body once a week.. Purely because he's a very slow grower and it's a little worrying, plus, he strikes and eats so much better on a bigger meal. I think it varies from snake to snake, but this is certainly a good beginners guide :)
I was thinking the same thing. One time I went to pick up my tamest and oldest snake but I forgot I recently took care of my rats and she bit me for the first time since the day I got her. Got me really good too and in front of my 6 year daughter. I had to play it off like it didn't hurt at all because that's her favorite snake and I didn't want her to become scared of pixie.
Do you guys know any good websites to buy mice and rats for my ball python? I have all the information I need and the setup, now I just need a good website to buy their food. Let me know pls and thanks.
Living dangerously, I see! Handling rodents and snakes at the same time! Did any of your sneks do you a bite? Really useful info though, thank you. That visual feeding chart is something I've never seen anyone do before, it's a great idea. I love the breakdown of nutrition that you did for mice vs rats for ball pythons. I see the same questions come up frequently in places like Reddit about that subject. Very nicely explained.
This video truely helped me figure out what size rodent to feed my first ever ball python. I was told she was like a year but she looks like a baby and was kind of skinny so I think they were feeding her to little. They were giving her one pinkie every two weeks but since I learned from this video about feeding I now give her an adult mouse once a week and she isn't hungry all the time. Before seeing this video I was feeding her one pinkie and one fuzzies in the same day once a week but I didn't want over feed her or make her work to hard eating since she wasn't very strong yet I wanted her to feel full. She is now doing great. Very friendly and more active.
Thank-you so much for this video. I'm a first time snake owner with a 1 year old corn snake. I wanted some visual examples of how to determine feed size and this video was just perfect!
I make sure my frozen thawed are warmed up in warm water right before feeding so they simulate the warmth of a live animal and I have tongs that I hold the tail off the mouse/rat and wiggle it to simulate movement. Never had any trouble using these tricks hope they work for you :)
Ive been struggling with my BP lately, I pulled out a size/weight by age chart and she’s below average, so I started feeding her medium sized rats or ginormous mice, I’ll see how this progresses, but by the moment she’s getting some notable weight gains :)
How do I convince my parents to do frozen rats???? Right now we feed him two live mice and he looks a little under weight. They are grossed out by the fact that they would have to have dead frozen animals in the freezer. He definitely needs a bigger meal and I don’t wanna give him a live rat because that would be a injury to him waiting to happen. He’s a two almost three year old ball python.
One more question if I'm feeding my ball python an 80gram rodent(rats) but I've run out but have 2 40g rodent would that be ok? I've heard some say yes and some no. Thanks
This channel helps sooo much! I’m a beginner snake owner and whenever my snake needs help but we can’t go anywhere I just study off of these videos lol love you keep up the amazing work!
@snake discovery I love your videos and I’ve been watching since your first video (I may have been a little late!!) and I really appreciate how much time you use and deditcate yourself to inform us!!!
jessica cotter well not exactly the bite itself but the shock, and he is an absolute baby and has never bitten me so it would be a bit sad if something like that would be the first time he bites me
Omg first! I love your videos! Also I don’t know if I should switch my ball python over to a heat mat or stay with a heat lamp. And if I do switch over I don’t know what one to get I’ve been reading reviews but they all seem to be really mixed. I actually found this video EXTREMELY helpful. Before I didn’t really know if I was feeding big enough rats to my ball python. I was feeding him small rats (3 1/2 - 4 inches roughly) and I thought that I might be feeding too small. Recently I got a medium rat and it looked huge (about 6 inches) so I didn’t want to feed him it.
Lyra M From what I’ve heard, you’d usually use heat mats with most snakes. Ball pythons in particular like to hide, so they’re not going to be out basking under a heat lamp like garters would. They, like most snakes, prefer to get their warmth from the “ground” underneath them.
Morgan Gobin Ok, I read that the other day. It’s one of the reasons I’m thinking of getting one. He likes to spend most of his time under a log hide so I think I would put it there. I think I’m going to do mor research on which one to get so I can order one along with a thermostat in a few days.
Hello to all I have to say I'm impressed I enjoy watching your videos you're very knowledgeable. And to be quite Frank you have answered a lot of my questions keep up the good work
My daughter is getting a ball python we have it on lay away and she has been doing research for months so thank you for helping by making this video!❤️
6:06 I actually feed my ball python gerbils, since they naturally eat those in the wild, I believe it would be good to feed them the same in captivity. Is it the same rule of thumb? And, I also feed live, and I have no clue if that changes any factors. (Please note, I am a relatively new snake owner, I got my snake, Halo, on September 21, 2018. Soooo I'm not all that informed on this stuff yet.)
Trans guy FtM I'd say the biggest issue with feeding live is that the prey can easily injure your snake by biting/scratching - be sure to monitor during feeding times to avoid that because that wouldn't be fun to find a bite wound
@@user-qv6jc5rq1u What have you tried to get him to eat frozen thawed? There are a lot of videos and information on methods to get them to switch. With snakes with heat sensing pits, getting them roughly body temperature can help. I suggest doing a Google search for snakes that were attacked during live feeding, since live prey can kill them. It's more fair to the snake and the rodents to make the effort. Edited for autocorrect errors.
@@millenial90 I have tried frozen-thawed before, the only reason it hasn't ever worked is because for the first year of his life (when he was in the possession of the breeder) he was ONLY fed life feed. I would love to switch, but, I haven't ever managed to get him to eat a single frozen-thawed
Brilliant thanks. I have a corn snake with not much knowledge about what to feed it except what the previous owner said, so this was great education for me.
