If you ever thought about doing a second channel for psychology of video games, might I recommend Psychonaughts, a game where you can hop into the minds of the characters and literally fight their demons, literally sort out their emotional baggage, with the levels and game mechanics being used to explain their psychology, Sasha Nein is very composed, so his mind is compressed to a cube that could launch memories and experiences out when that composer breaks, in Milla Vodello’s mind, it’s very bright and bubbly (literally), but in a little corner, you can see her trauma, and in the famous Milkman Conspiracy level, you go into the mind of a paranoid conspiracy theorist, trash cans take pictures of you when you aren’t looking, there are G-men pretending to be road crew workers or plumbers, and going into buildings put you in the perspective of hidden cameras, you could do an entire series JUST on the characters of the psychonaughts games
It is a game, rather than a movie, but a series on the many characters of Psychonaughts would be really cool, in the games, you can literally hop into the minds of the characters and see the physical representation of their inner world, where you can help them by literally sorting out emotional Baggage, and defeating their nightmares, there is enough amazing levels to make a full series of analysis videos for each character, from Milkman Conspiracy, to psi-king’s sensorium, that franchise is an untapped gold mine of content
I don't know if Alan is an anime(or a Speed Racer) fan, but I def saw it today If he is. I remember being a kid when Speed Racer was popular... and DAMN if the theme song didn't play in my head watching this film. Go Speed Racer, GO
What do you think about Kinds of Kindness? That is one big gaslighting and manipulation topic... oh no... three topics of mental abuse? and physical...
I know a lot people were disappointed because it wasn't faithful, but I lived how crazy this movie was. The style, the colors, the campyness. It made me happy. It is a guilty pleasure, for sure.
When I tell people Speed Racer is one of my all time films people don’t get it but Alan does…Alan does. The last race sequence is truly a spiritual experience
Everytime I tell someone speed racer is one of my all time favorites films people look at me sideways, but not one single person I've ever watched it with always ends up loving it
I don't care if this movie was almost universally panned by critics, it was my entire childhood. It's cheesy, but the stunning visually effects, vivid cinematography and slick editing make it unforgettable.
That's just it though. They brought a cartoon to life, and did so SPECTACULARLY. Filled with mad-cap fun, whimsey, and then layered drama on top of that for the adults to enjoy. I don't understand how the critics didn't get that.
It's basically a European art house movie dressed up as a summer blockbuster. The wachowskis were influenced by a lot of obscure avant-garde cinema, & you can see it in there
Mainstream critics have become so bitter and jaded toward pretty much every medium that they see something being genuinely positive and heartfelt and go "this is garbage, don't watch/read/play this." They can't stand that people want entertainment, not endless works that make a statement or are cynical toward life.
The thing that I've noticed a lot of people missed about this movie is that it isn't only a great film shot precisely and worked on with passion, it's not only a speed racer movie, it's also a Hot Wheels movie. The tracks and the cars, and even the emotion. It reminds me a lot about acceleracers. Great directors, great action, fantastic visuals, an homage to both speed racer and Hot Wheels. This movie has so much to offer, and when I first saw it in theaters with only me and my date seated (sadly enough), I felt exactly what Allen did throughout this whole movie and even more so at the ending. Years later I'm so happy it's getting the recognition it deserved. Speed racer the move was ahead of its time.
I love to see people properly appreciate Speed Racer. Between this and the V for Vendetta movie I'd argue that the Wachowskis may be unmatched when it comes to their adaptions of comics. NOT because their adaptions are slavishly accurate, because they are absolutely not, but because they make smart choices about what to keep and what to change to still capture the heart of the original in a way suited to the medium of film.
They also have great skills/instincts for capturing and translating the visual style of a graphic novel. The framing, color, poses, dialogue, timing, etc. Think about the sequence on the roof in The Matrix, where Neo almost dodges the agent’s bullets, and then Trinity head-shots the agent while he’s distracted. You could take stills from that sequence, add word balloons, and it would read perfectly as a graphic novel.
@@SynchronizorVideos This makes SO much sense that it actually fixes the scene. I've been mocking Trinity for years, holding a gun to an AGENT'S head, saying "dodge this", and waiting several seconds to pull the trigger. He would indeed have dodged that. But when imagining it in comic form, panel by panel, it's suddenly a perfect moment. Knowing that they were trying to capture that feeling helps me get into exactly the right mindset to appreciate it for what it is, instead of chiding it for not being what I expected it to be. (It was good-natured chiding, mostly, but I still vastly prefer this) Also the bullet-time slowdowns make more sense now too.
Wachowski Sisters, as always, way ahead of their time with this film. Will always remember seeing this in the theater as a kid and obsessing with it, even to this day as an adult
It's funny how a pair that are such horrible people in person somehow keep pumping out movies that rock. Even the movies that flopped like this and Jupiter still have such great moments.
I can't tell you how great it feels to see someone who loves this movie as much as I do. I grew up on the cartoons and this movie brought it to life perfectly. Best cartoon turned into live action period. Fight me.
I agree with Alan, Speed Racer is a top 5 movie! Another thing I’d add for a characteristic is boldness. During the final race, Speed is thinking of what Royalton was saying, but not in a negative way. Yes, Royalton may be right about racing being rigged but, Speed is believing that it doesn’t matter. Speed loves racing, always has always will. He’s boldly saying I love what I do and I don’t care if others use racing for profit or gain. No one will tell me if I win or lose, I will race because I love it.
Alan, i couldn't agree more!! Seriously, as a film of finding your values, living your truth and getting to see what real family support looks like....this was an incredibly powerful film for me. Not to mention the filmmaking quality, the eye candy, the incredible sense of immersion as a rally car racer and the fecking kick*ss remake of the speed racer song....sigh....chef's kiss heaven of a film!! Edit: It was films like these that let me know that rational humans could exist. Even if was in some dream fantasy world like Speed Racer.
literally my most favorite movie OF ALL TIME!!!! thank you guys so so so much for going over this movie and its messages. no one can ever tell me that this movie is bad this movie is absolutely incredible (this movie also awakened my love for cars and engineering lmao)
Speed Racer is also in my top five favorite films! It is my go-to movie when I just want to relax and have a great time. I have seen it more times than I can count. Such a masterful piece of work. This is how you do a live-action anime.
When I was in high School I was teased constantly by classmates, teachers, and family members for loving this film. To this day, even though I quote it weekly to my boys, I call it my guilty pleasure movie not my favorite... You made my day by covering it and Allen admitting it's one of his top 5 movies! Thank you for showcasing it 😊
This movie is so good. I’ve loved it when I was little and still do. Not only for the whole family aspect but just the cinematography and all of the spectacles and the way the editing is…it’s just so great.
It made me happy to see Alan getting so excited and talking about the film making. While I get so much out of Johns therapy side, I knew nothing about film making before discovering this channel and it has taught me to really appreciate the small details. We love you Alan for more then your tears and amazing hair.
I remember working at my local movie theater when this movie came out. I was 17. It has stayed with me since I ran the dry run for it. Other co-workers thought it was terrible, as did other audiences, but I saw it as what Alan see's it as too. It's a movie with heart, about family and following your passion. It's just wrapped up in dripping, oozing CG car racing bonanza. I would love to see more cinema like this and Godzilla -1, where good stories are at the forefront, being driven by heart and passion with CG to aid the story. Point. Blank.
I’m right there with you Allen! I’ve loved this movie dearly from the first time I watched it. It’s in my collection and I’ve enjoyed every rewatch with the same passion as the first.
I’m so glad that I know there’s somebody else who sees how beautiful, visually and emotionally this movie is. It is a masterpiece of human creativity. No one knows how desperate I am for another movie like this one, it’s artistry and passion for going 100%
I’ll always be so glad that I got to experience this movie for the first time, right in the middle of the theater! That climax was amazing and deserves to be seen on the big screen!! And I’m always so happy to find people who have so much love for this film like you~❤️
The thing I love about this film, above all else, is that it's about someone with a genuine love for what he does, finding a place to do it in. I watch that rotating shot with the match cut between young Speed pretending to race, and older Speed _racing,_ and I see myself. I see that shot and I feel like someone _understands_ me, understands why I do what I do, and it makes me cry.
I'm with Alan, this movie is hype as sh-t. I laugh, I cry, I get chills. I don't care that that the source material is stupid, in fact, I see that as a plus, it's colorful, it's beautifully shot, the cinematography is fantastic, the energy is insane, the music works so well with it all, the villain is as realistic and despicable as he is entertaining, and the writing and character performances are just so heartfelt and genuine. It's one of my favorites, and it is absolutely the best sports movie.
OMG! I'm so in love with you, guys. Ever since I found this channel a few weeks here it has been a "Let's cry a little" time. You have so much passion: Alan with your crying and your speeches about the beauty of the art, Jono with your history and your experience with psychology, but both of you with your wisdom and this will to give us some of this insights about the beauty of love, of life, of everything... SO MUCH BEAUTIFUL, and powerful! I am profoundly grateful to have meet you here, guys. And in just some weeks you have become one of my favorite channels here of my life. TOP 5, just like this Speed Racer movie is to Alan and me.
In which I am Alan 'cause I'm also openly wheeping about the final sequence again. Might be my first time seeing (not just reading) someone who enjoys this movie in a way I do too (yes it is the greatest he is correct). Also the Racer family is indeed special - the trope of heroes having tragic families is so widespread sometimes I straight up forget what that's like.
So glad you made this, this film reduces me to a blubbering wreck every time as well! Happy to see its not just me and also to understand how the Wachowskis played our heart strings like a goddamn fiddle! 😭❤
Oh man I love this movie, it's just fantastic. Every artistic medium and discipline working in concert to create a cathartic story, wondrous visuals, gripping music, and syncretic sound design.
I love this movie SOOO much. It's a great experience showing how supporting someone through their passions allows that Passion to flow back through them exponentially. And the Line about not changing Racing, but racing it change you is sooo powerful, because we already know Speed is going to change racing, We the audience, REX, and the entirety of his family knows. But what's important for Speed is how is his passion, his love of Racing will change him on his path to become the Racer who WILL change Racing. there is just so much this movie brings to the table that makes me so sad it didnt get the love it deserved when it released.
Speed Racer was my early childhood. Made me wanna be a racing driver at 6 years old. This movie I have seen dozens of times. My favorite movie of all time.
YES!!! I LOVE SPEED RACER!! I actually cosplayed as this version's Speed Racer for a comic con the one year, and yes, absolutely NO ONE knew who tf I was 😂
I used to have the DVD of the og tv show, I donated them to our public library, in Pichilemu. My mom and I love this movie from the core of our cars... I mean hearts, I always cry while watching it, even when I'm listening to the soundtrack.
Speed Racer is my favorite movie of all time. Nothing comes close to it for me. I rave about it to my friends and people I meet, and when I show it to them, they love it, but it doesn't feel like they really understand why It's one of my favorite things ever. I try to explain, but I just don't ever have the proper words to properly and truly put out my feelings about this movie. Seeing Alan go off about what was happening and getting just as, if not more excited than me about it, just felt cathartic in a way. It's so rare to find people so overwhelmingly in love with everything about this movie and it makes so happy and emotional to see Alan pour out his excitement for it. I've never been able to express my love for the movie properly, but Alan has in a way that perfectly reflects my own excitement. It feels good. Thank you Alan for being you and letting your passion out into the world. Thank you for doing an episode on Speed Racer. Truly a masterpiece of a film.
Thank you for covering this movie. It is the purest racing racing film I've ever gotten to watch. It's also just pure anime. Faithful or not, we asked for real life anime and sure as hell got it.
This movie is so good. My father watched the original anime and while he felt kinda confused by how the movie was portrayed, i loved it and i remember him saying "its s bit to crazy for me but im happy seeing you and your brother so energic about it". This movie exales shonen anime energy to the point theres memes with amime ost's over the last scene and its message is so beautiful, doing what you do because it gives you joy, because its how you reach your own form of transcendence is usually what people that do many forms of art live for and that touched me to my core. I often watch this movie when i feel down and it usually will remember me that i do what i do because i deeply love doing it, because its the moment which i can truly reach my real self and release it all.
27:08 “I’ve been so proud of you before that this has happened…” I can’t think of many things that are as special as having a friendship like this. Thanks for sharing your friendship with us!
I saw a clip from this episode on TikTok and immediately ran here to watch the full thing. Speed Racer is one of my longest running all time favourite movies and I’ll defend it until I die. It has so much soul to it and I cry every time I watch it. Thank you for talking about it
I am so happy someone sees this movie, especially that last race scene, like I do. I also get very emotional and get teary eyed watching that race. It's just so perfectly written, edited, cgi'd, composed...I have not seen anything that meets it. So thank you Alan I feel less crazy now.
This is one of my favorite films, the editing, the story, the camp, and there will almost never be another movie like this again. I showed this to my friends, and they loved it... and they even finished it without me. EVEN THOUGH I HAD TO GO TO WORK THAT DAY.
the fact that you guys reviewed this movie and praise it so much makes me feel so good cause i know this movie was moving. and the scene in the ending that made you cry confirms that i wasnt wrong.
It's always fascinating to listen to Alan geek about the film's technical aspects. We just enjoy the achievement crying, but it's so magical to understand why certain things are so moving. I love movies! I love Cinema Therapy! Haha! Literally!
I cry every time I watch the ending of this movie. My emotions are high, the announcers and crowd is screaming every emotion in my head. Which makes my thoughts go "Yes. Yes!!" This movie is in my top 10.
I've never seen this movie before, but something I loved about all these scenes (especially the final race scene) is how it focuses its special fx purely on the emotional feel of a scene. All the visual effects, the soundtrach, the sfx, the scenery, EVERYTHING is purely an expression of emotions in the form of film. Is it unrealistic and a bit tacky by big screen standards? sure, but it makes you FEEL EVERYTHING and that's what makes it great. It's a real work of art. I'm really glad yall did an episode on this movie. Its so cool!
I love this film to no end. It is one of my favorite feel good films and is perfect every single time. The way Alan feels, I second. It's a perfect film. I cry every time it's so good!
That ending scene always brings tears to my eyes too. Ngl when I figured out you guys where doing speed racer I got just as hype as when I first say the trailer for the actual movie. I absolutely agree this is one of the best movies in my heart.
I loved this movie so much as a teen and I watched it so much in 2008 at my first job working at a Cinemark. Also, what a smoke show Susan and Christina were! (and are!)
I still remember seeing it in the cinema and 10 year old me being like 😮 the whole time. I used to be the best at the Speed Racer game on Wii. I haven’t watched it in 10+ years but I’m definitely going to watch it again.
When my cousin was little kid he loved this movie, always talked about it non stop. Makes me nostalgic to watch it now since he’s about to leave for college.
Omgomgomg O M G!!!!! I can’t believe you’ve done SPEED RACER!!!!!!! This one is my all time favorite move and I can’t believe it’s slept on so much. And I LOVE THAT ALLAN HAS THIS IN HIS TOP FIVE!!!!! You have no idea how happy it’s made me that you’re covering this movie
This was such a good video. You both truly capture everything I feel about this movie that I can’t put into words myself. I love movies so much and my heart pounds every time I watch the finale of Speed Racer. I thought something was emotionally imbalanced within me to care so much, but I see that I’m not the only one. And the explanation of the 4 “happy cries” along with seeing Alan care so much made me feel so connected to humanity and not alone in my passion. I really appreciate the effort to make this video. I hope you keep making these and staying true to your passions 🫶
Thank yall soooo much for doing this movie! I love this movie, possibly more than Allen! To find people who love it as much as I did and to get as emotional as I do at the final race scene means so much. I LOVE this movie, and how it just takes you on a journey and you feel all the emotions with each frame. Thank you, Cinema Therapy. This episode hits me like your Quiet Place one.
I LOVE this movie! Absolutely 100% agree Top 5- dare I say top 3 even! I was tearing up right along with you Alan, Great cinematic perspective too! Really adding to my already huge love for this film!!
I remember owning the album of Speed Racer stickers. The only album of such kind I filled out. And I still have one of those stickers on the headboard of my bed. I Loved this film. Happy it's not forgotten. 🎉
I know the feeling of the "achievement cry!" I finally finished, and published, my book this year. I worked on it for YEARS. Way too many years, and finally got off my butt and got it to a state where I could be proud of it and just published it. Now it is out there! People can read it! The thing that I wrote myself! I was so happy after I submitted it I just cried.
wow i haven't thought about this movie in a long time but being probably one of the youngest people to comment on this video and have seen both this movie and every episode of the original animated series (I'm 20 BTW) i always loved this movies and just watching this video has made me see the movie differently and now i want to go back and watch it again. This is why i love watching Cinema Therapy because i usually learn something new and incredible about the movie and sometime about my self as well
Oh my gosh! This is one of my all time top three movies; the delightful transition from cartoon to video - both Trixie and mom remain feminine, but are strong characters. I love Trixie's dedication to Speed, and determination to help as she can. I love when mother matter of factly states that "we will find a way to go home together". I cry every time Speed "races" Rex. Like Lord of the Rings, the movie wasn't faithful in every detail, but it was faithful to the spirit and made the story better. I describe this to people as a cross between a cartoon and fireworks - with the caution that if bright flashes are not good for you - don't watch. And yes, the relationship between Speed and the Mach is so lovely. I see spirit in everything - and of COURSE she is alive.
YESSSSS!!! THIS IS WHAT I WAS WAITING FOR!!! I watched this movie a LOT as a kid and forgot about it until high school and thought to myself “hmm I’ll rewatch it. I hope I still like it,” and it became one of my top three movies.
I get a 100% Allan, i get the same blood-pumping feeling. I realized i had the same level of happiness i experienced while the 2022 worldcup when argentina won. Not at same level, but same feeling, i literally cry
I am firm in my belief that Speed Racer is one of the best films of all time, and you cannot change my mind it was a masterpiece through and through, being faithful to the original material whilst still making it something new and interesting! Brilliant
I clicked on and I am now only clicking off because that montage at the beginning is the best piece of advertising for this movie I've ever seen and I want to watch it first before I see this ep so I will be doing that very soon.
Alan just MIGHT possibly be the one person that MAYBE loves this movie just as much as I do... Thank you guys for this video. I just watched this movie again this last Saturday and it is so crazy to me that you uploaded this video today... I guess everything is connected through the Speedforce. I would LOVE to own this movie in 4k... Masterpiece. Edit: although... I disagree with Alan. I don't feel like this movie is about sports or even racing. I think this movie is about art. Openly and mercilessly it is just a furious love letter to art and the people who create it.
This is actually the second youtube channel I've seen that appreciates this movie to this degree. The first was Mothers basement, and anime review channel. I remember enjoying this movie as a teen but I've got to see it again after so long.
The way I would describe this movie to someone is, this movie is how a child who watched the original show would describe it to an adult. With all that energy distilled in this masterpiece.
I’m a film critic now, when I watch this film with my dad as a kid it was bonding moment for both of us. He grew up with the original show. We related to the relationship between speed and his dad. This film is not perfect but it was perfect for us 😊.
I felt so strange loving this movie while a lot of people around me and online just hated it. Any positive videos about how wonderful Speed Racer just brings me a bunch of joy.
My two cents in why Alan joy-cries with this: "Stendhal Syndrome is an overwhelmed response to artistic beauty that can cause rapid heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, and confusion. In extreme cases, one may even experience hallucinations."
It's so cathartic for me to know there are other Speed Racer movie enthusiasts. I can't stand the Fast and The Furious movies (except for Tokyo Drift) because it stopped about being about the cars and the insane driving. Tokyo Drift is the only one where I felt like the driving was top notch. Speed Racer is not meant to be realistic but it is soooo much fun! The colour, the camera work, the speed, you feel like you're in it and so close watching it from an observer perspective. It's amazing.
It's safe to say that after this video if Alan does not already have a Letterboxd account he needs to make one and throw it in the description. That reaction was absolutely amazing.
