Schools in America have embraced standardized testing as the only legitimate measure of success. We know it doesn’t work well and, at its worst, kills the love of learning innate in every child. We value what we measure, so what comes when we decide to measure love of learning or student engagement? What happens when we treat students as partners instead of experimental subjects as we look for the best possible outcomes in education?
Since 1980, Robert D. Brisk has been passionate about changing the world of education. Rob serves as the Head of The Wellington School, an independent school for students in preschool through grade 12. Wellington under Rob’s leadership has developed and commercialized educational technology focused on student engagement and has been named a top workplace in Columbus 4 years running.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

For the many students attending failing schools, the only voice they have to cry out for help is through standardized testing. Those who oppose standardized testing stand against the one tool we have to not only measure when our children are not receiving quality instruction, but also the spotlight that has revealed the racism inherent in school systems across the country, including here in Franklin County, where over half of black and latino/a students are in failing school districts compared to 9% of white students. Opposition to standardized testing places the desires of privileged white adults over the needs of children of color.

I know Rob Brisk and that might be the most uneducated and cruel statement you could make of him. Under his tutelage, Mr. Brisk has made the Wellington School 40% diverse in a neighborhood that is 88.5% white. I don't think you can fairly allege that Rob Brisk has only the desires of the privileged white adults in mind. In regards to school segregation, it is not like Ohio is special in its inadequecy. In fact, I don't think I can come up with one state that has a well sorted out solution to the racism inherent in the U.S's school districts.
