That is a brilliant question and the truth is it comes down to personal circumstances. I know people, myself included, who came through the self taught route and have done well. I know people who did the same. Then went to school and got a degree just because they could and they wanted a stronger understanding of computer science, not just how to code. It honestly comes down to cost and time. If you have both then I do not see why not. On the flip side, depending on your career goals it may not bring you what you think it will.
