Tales from the Loops and Stranger things-- comparing them is like comparing apples with oranges.. they are nothing alike

I'm a swede, and now i have seen the whole serie and I love it. I'm a fan of Simon Stålenhags painting and a become a little bit worried of that the stories should take place in US and not i Sweden. But as a swede it was funny with all the swedish easter eggs, like the volvos, the Owe Thörnqvist song i episode 1 and the police car in episode 5. :-)

Top directing, cinematography, casting and Phillip Glass score. Fascinating and unique world building, where the ambiguity and mystery do not impoverish the experience: they enhance it. It sets a memorable mood that lingers. Such great storytelling, characters and emotion in such a pretty package is going to bear repeat viewings. I have a feeling this is going to make it onto a lot of people's 'best of' lists and deserves awards attention. I'm all in! The "sci-fi" (such that it is) is merely the thin device needed to get to the wondrous heart of each tale. The tales are about the moral and ethical issues that the characters must face. I usually stopped each episode about three quarters in to see if I could figure out the ending. I missed every time! The bonus for me was the wonderful score by Paul Leonard-Mason and Philip Glass. I bought the soundtrack! The show was an excellent distraction from my quarantine routine.

Tales From the Loop (the book) is to Stranger Things as John Carter (the book) was to Superman, Star Trek, Space 1999, Logan Run, Star Wars, Dune, et al. Well, maybe not, but the fact that it did precede Stranger Things and happened to drop as a TV show during a time of 80's nostalgia tends to make me want to make that over dramatic point. These stories about kids solving small town mysteries (like ET, Stranger Things, Goonies, Super 8, IT, Paper Girls) are part of the KIDS ON BIKES genre. I would really appreciate if more people, talking about those movies/series/books could mention the name of the genre, because it’s very popular, but no one really even knows that it is an existing genre and because I love that genre, lots of „genres“, sorry for that :)

Because that's not a real genre. I've been a fan of film and TV studies, lived through the actual '80s, and have never heard that term. I have just watched the entire series, and found it to be a great adaptation of the books. Still, I missed some of the tech, which explains the world of the Loop. The facility houses a particle accellerator (the "Loop"), much like CERN, which is the major source of the anomalies. The magnetrine technology isn't explained at all, and only barely referenced; the huge flying ships are an iconic part of Stålenhag's art. I should know, as I wrote most of the tech stuff for the roleplaying game. In episode 5 ("Control") the remote-controlled robot (or the "Paarhufer Mk 79 Semi-Autonomous Service Unit" as I called it in the game) worked a bit differently than I had in my mind, but it was cool nonetheless. Anyway, the creators got a lot of things right, and my wife and I drooled over Loretta's mid-century modern house. I hope there'll be a second season.

As a tabletop roleplaying game enthusiast I purchased the Tales from the Loop RPG about 10 months ago and the world it is set in looks to be very cool after reading through the books. I first heard about the game after it first came out as a Kickstarter campaign near the end of 2016 but missed the opportunity to help kick start it. One of my gaming friends recommended it so I researched it and finally bought a couple of the books. I also bought the art and story book The Electric State by the original Swedish creator Simon Stalenhag and the artwork is amazing. I have not been able to run or play the RPG yet as we were in the middle of a Trail of Cthulhu RPG scenario before the pandemic came about. But when I first heard they were going to do an Amazon series a few months ago I was excited. So I am looking forward to it. As a teenager through the latter half of the 80s I can appreciate the 80s nostalgia. And as an avid D&D player when I was a kid back then just like the kids in Stranger Things I have a fondness for that show too. Tales is definitely going to be a different kind of story though. It's more sci fi heavy than Stranger Things because Earth is now actually an alternative history from our normal Earth since the discovery of the particle accelerator in the 1950s. So, in Tales, robots are walking around as a part of normal life. The 1980s it is set in is pretty different than our real 1980s or that of Stranger Things. Anyway, slower moving story or not I will definitely watch the new series on Amazon Prime.

Yo that's awesome I got the book with my brother from the Kickstarter campaign and I have to say I haven't got to play much of it with my group but I have read through the book and the story is pretty interesting and I really want to see what the tv show is going to do. Also less related but what is the Trail of Cthulhu like? I've heard of it from a few buds of mine but I haven't been able to play it.
@Miskatonic1927
@Miskatonic1927 4 года назад
@@FrostWolfNation If you are familiar with Call of Cthulhu RPG, Trail of Cthulhu is very similar with the Lovecraftian mythos and general cosmic horror style roleplaying. But the key difference is that the rule set is the Gumshoe System by Pelgrane Press. Gumshoe System is used in several of Pelgrane's RPGs making it very easy to play all of their RPGs without having to learn new rules. The key difference with the Gumshoe system is that there is less dice rolling due to investigative skills not requiring rolls as long as you have the particular skills to discover the clues. It really creates a smoother playing experience where PCs don't get hung up in certain areas due to not finding clues. Plus Gumshoe is a skill based system. There are no stats. Everything relies on the skills along with Sanity, Stability, and your Pillars of Sanity and Sources of Stability. It is a very investigative based horror system. So if you like a lot of mystery with your horror then Trail of Cthulhu is a better playing experience than Call of Cthulhu. And to reiterate, the Gumshoe system is interchangeable with the other Pelgrane Gumshoe games. So if you are not in the horror mood, there is a sci-fi game called Ashen Stars; Mutant City Blues is mutant super-ish hero-ish style game; in Nights Black Agent your characters are going after a vampire conspiracy from the perspective of a secret agency. And there a few others in that system.

I love sci-fi, so I will definitely check this show out. That said, I lived through the actual '80s, and it was far less romantic, or idealized than these shows like to portray. I was around the age of most of the characters, too, so I was aware of what was going on, but it was nothing like these shows promote. Pop-culture was just part of the era and the era itself wasn't treated like pop-culture itself. I never felt the existential threat of nuclear annihilation and we just carried on like we do today... Global pandemic notwithstanding. If anything, THIS era, right now, is going to be referenced and portrayed a lot more in-depth for years to come because it's a major historical and culture turning event/crisis we're all living through versus idealizing in hindsight. Just throwing this out there...

The Loop machine must have been made from either a meteorite or extraterrestrial technology that crashed on earth. To do what the machine can do it probably answers what is The Theory of Everything. So far it has demonstrated anti-gravity, time travel, teleportation?, and possibly replication technology.

Didn't think about Stranger things for a second. Remind me of "Her" and some me animes like "your name ". High concept used to investigate a few human an dramas. Amazing experience. Re watching the whole series right now.

This looks more like Black Mirror than Stranger Things. Episodes have completely themes and settings, and look far better than that horrible season 4

See, I'm getting seriously pissed about channels doing this stuff: How this is *better* than that. How Salonga sings Burn *better* than Philippa Soo (yeah, I'm changing the subject); how one show is trash & another is cooler. THERE'S ROOM FOR ALL!

A think a better analog to TFTL is Pulp Fiction. Each story is a vignette, but they're all connected, and it is anachronistic. The anachronism here comes from actual fuckery though and isn't just a narrative device.
